| Chapter 1 |
| "Remember Bri, you have to take the bus home after school, I have to work." I said wriggling the handle of my old truck's door. Finally it clicked shut. "I know Maggie, you've told me a hundred times!" Brian said rolling his eyes and turning his back to me. He began walking toward the school. "Bri, wrong way!" I shouted. He suddenly changed his direction. I began my journey through the halls of Hillside High. This was going to be the start of my senior year and unless I kicked some serious academic butt I knew I would have no hopes of ever attending a college. Since my family had no money and I was extremely unathletic, I knew I had no hopes of ever going to any college unless I got an academic scholarship. Hillside High School was home to California's richest and snobbiest. I made my way into my first class of the day. Just as I was about to take a seat, a voice came from behind me. "Um, sweetie do you think I want to sit behind you all year? No." A high pitched voice spoke. I turned and found a tall skinny blonde waving her finger at me. I grabbed my stuff and moved to the back corner. I always ended up in a corner. *** *** *** I turned out of the student parking lot during the busy after-school rush. I suddenly jolted in my seat, then jolted again crashing into a telephone poll on the side of the street. I shook my head as if to shake off the pain and then realized smoke was billowing from the hood of my truck. I panicked trying to push open my door. I sprung open and someone grabbed my arm helping me out. "Are you alright?" "Yeah but...yeah." I said looking at the remains of my vehicle. I didn't know how I was going to make it to school and work each day, and I knew my dad was going to kill me. I sat on the curb while the cops took a report and began instructing the traffic around the two immobile cars. I looked up into the cloudy, dark September sky and it definitely suggested rain. I tried to hide my face as I began to cry, clutching my shoulders in the chilling wind. "Hey?" A guy's voice spoke as I felt someone sit next to me. I wiped the tears off my cheeks with the back of my hands not wanting anyone to know I was crying. I finally looked up to find an extremely attractive male sitting beside me. "I'm Shane, the guy who hit you." He said smiling slightly, "I'm really sorry, please don't cry." I started to rub my arms trying to warm myself up. "Here, we're gonna be out here a while." Shane said wrapping his jean jacket around my shoulders. "Thanks." I said still trying to figure out what I was going to tell my father. It was going to be a long night, and by the way my luck was going, an even longer year. |
