CONNECTICUT BUG-A-FAIR 2003

August 17, TERRYVILLE, CT

It was a warm, sunny day at the fairgrounds, and the local Lions Club helped put on a great show, as always! I think the CVA (Connecticut VW Association) also sponsors. I drove up in my bus and brought my boy, Jack and my neice, Natalie. There were many excellent cars to see, and fun things to do. Natalie and Jack both left their marks on the primered beetle that everyone draws upon. I've included a picture, below. The watercooled section was pretty big, and seems to grow every year, as more young people get into the hobby. It looks like a real generation gap between the air and water sections of the show. All the middle-aged, beer-bellied guys like me are mostly in the aircooled area, and the young hipsters are mostly in the radiator section. The great thing about this show is that it welcomes all VW's, regardless of age or design. I forgot to bring my camera, so I relied upon my neice's good will in mailing me copies of her photos after she had gone home to Idaho. They just arrived yesterday, and now they are here on the site for all to see. Luckily, she is a good photographer.

Enjoy the show!

Left is the art beetle, the ultimate in mobile self-expression. To the right is one of the three harlequin golfs in attendance.

Next, front and rear views of a rare Schwimmwagen. The new VW Touareg can ford 22 inches of water safely; but the Schwimmwagen could drive right into the river or lake, navigate under power to the other side, and drive up onto the opposite bank, while firing the hood-mounted machine gun; and it didn't cost $40K, either.

Check out the swing-down propeller assembly, and the driver's side oar (in case of engine malfunction, not that it would ever happen in a VW). What a car! I'm the giant guy in the white T-shirt, and that's my son Jack in dark green on the right.

Here are a couple of great looking beetles, one old, one new. Both would be fun to drive around! Check out the massive nitrous bottle on the rear deck. You think that car jams on the freeway?

A Cabriolet, and a very nice, red Jetta III:

Finally, a terrific yellow Type 181 (The Thing!). This is a great shot because the photographer's grandfather drove one of these for many years before she was born, and she never got to see it. Well, I've seen it, and it was a great car, and it looked a lot like this:

I apologize to all the other bus fans out there for the distinct lack of bus photos from this event. I never left a show w/o some bus pics, until I forgot my camera!

I promise to have plenty next season!
