First There Was ROBOT JOX...

Robot Wars

Metal against metal.  Blow upon blow.  Powerful arms reach out to grab and choke, eletrifying lasers light up the sky as they ricochet off solid plates of steel.

The ultimate battle between metallic giants begins when a malicious foreign dignitary hijacks the last mega-robot on Earth, the MRAS-2, and threatens to unleash its crushing powers against the people of the Eastern Alliance.  There's only one force magnificent enough to stop the MRAS-2, a MEGA-1 robot hidden under the city.  It's up to a renegade pilot (Don Michael Paul) and brilliant archaeologist (Barbara Crampton) to revive the MEGA-1 and re-establish world peace.

Will the MEGA-1 be able to survive the onslaught of the new robot and its superior technology?  A phenomenal battle lies ahead...

Liner Notes

Ever since I was a child and exposed to films, I was facinated by the way sound and music were used to enhance the action up on the big screen.  From large epics to smaller, more personal films, I hoped to someday be a part of that world.

Over the last four years I've really thought and studied a lot about soundtracks.  Scoring is very complex since what is written musically must integrate with many other factors to complete the whole picture.  I've looked forward to the time that I would be involved with the "behind the scenes" creative force that brings to life the adventure, fantasy and human experiences that we all love to see.  I guess that time has come because I've had the good fortune to compose this soundtrack.  "Robot Wars" is a fun adventure-filled movie with several interesting characters and I enjoyed the futuristic aspect as well as the giant robots.

I began by composing individual musical motifs for the main characters: Drake, Leda and Wa-Lee.  With so much action and special effects, it seemed up to the music to add cohesion and link together the different scenes.  The tone of the film changes about halfway through when we realize Wa-Lee is actually a bad guy and Leda discovers something strange underground at Crystal Vista.  It was fun (yet challenging) to illustrate the revelations musically.  I interwove some of the underground mystery music with Wa-Lee's dark brass motif and added the playful heroic aspect of Drake's character.

I was proud to work with the many talented people involved in this production.  My heartfelt thanks go out to Albert and Charles Band, and Pat Siciliano for letting me get my feet wet in such a pleasurable and professional manner.  I hope that we can collaborate again in the near future.  I must also thank all the musicians who performed the music, Dan Chase for engineering and especially Kostia for his orchestrations.  A final thanks to all the people who have supported my music throughout the years.  This album is repectfully dedicated to Jerry Goldsmith.
