The House On Sorority Row

Composed and Conducted by
Richard Band

"We're going to England!"  That's what richard Band and music supervisor Igo Kantor told me about their plans to score "The House On Sorority Row".  I couldn't believe a 4450,000 movie could afford that but it was the most cost effective way to get an orchestral score.  That's what I wanted for my first feature.  That plus a great composer.

Before i met Richard, i had assembled a tempory soundtrack for the rough cut which had a mixture of diverse styles: "Rosemary's Baby", "Amityville Horror", "Sisters" and "Psycho".  Richard viewed the film and gave it a big compliment - "You don't need a score to fix problems, you need it to embellish what's working."  What Richard did beautifully was take the style I was going for and give it a unique voice all it's own.

After Richard finished writing, we went to England to record over three nightly sessions.  It was a wonderful experience for a young (twenty-five year old) first time director to walk into the studio and see the orchestra - all these great musicans wearing suits and ties, completely professional, and
very "English".

Hearing the score for the first time is always one of my favorite parts of the filmmaking process.  As Richard conducted, Igo and I sat in the booth, listening and imagining.  We couldn't afford to project the film so our minds were the screen.  But a real screen wasn't necessary.  Richard's music immediately conjured up the scenes and fit them so prefectly.

I especially love in this score the use of the music box sound which is a key prop in the movie.  Richard composed that music, then used the melody in many different variations throughout the film.  also, a key concept in the film was the housemother's son.  Richard brought a young boy into the studio and did some great vocalizations with him which were then interwoven through the soundtrack.

Working with Richard on my first feature was a wonderful experience which I'll never forget.  And every time I see the movie, two of my favorite credits are always "Recorded by the London Phiharmonic Orchestra" and of course... "Music Composed and Conducted by Richard Band".
