| Zachery, the vampire turned vampire hunter in the film Vampire Journals (1996), is a noturnal creature with a mortal's heart. He is on a mission of revenge against the vampire who turned him into a creature of the night and killed Rebecca, his true love, and all of the spawn related to her. He was transformed approximately a century ago by a female vampire named Serena with whom he had a brief dalliance. Through this century, he has killed hundreds of vampires with the Sword of Laertes, a weapon he carries with him. He finally arrives in post-Ceausescu Bucharest where a group of vampires are ruled by their master Ash. |
| Zachery is a traditional vampire, with pale skin and prominent fangs. He is strong and fast, and can transform into a shadow to travel quickly. Like his peers, he can be caught in the passion of feeding at which time he is distracted and vulnerable. He hates killing, and drinks only to survive. He does not have the strength to look upon the face of his victims and rarely takes enough blood to kill them. He counts on that momentary vulnerability in other vampires and uses it to get close to them for the kill. They are vulnerable to the sword either impaling them or decapitating them. |
| In the process of hunting Ash, he steps between Ash and his latest infatuation, a young American pianist, Sofia Christopher. Ash is enraptured with her and invites her to give a private performance at his nightclub, Club Muse, which is managed by his minions. After the concert, Ash takes Sofia to his room and bites her for the first time. He does not transformer her immediately as he first wants her to acknowledge his masterhood. In the meantime, Zachery tries to figure out a means to get to her. |
| Just before he turns Sofia, Ash invites Zachery into his abode. After taking his sword, he offers him a deal. He would give Zachery sanctuary for one evening, supply him with free food, and allow him to see Sofia. In return he must leave town forever. Zachery agrees. While Zachery is feeding on the young woman Ash put at his disposal, Ash brings Sofia into the room. It is all he needs to finally convince her she has no hope. She accepts her fate and Ash shares his blood with her. |
| Zachery, however, feels that Ash has made their deal null and void, and he attacks him as he is turning Sofia. The wounded Ash is slow to respond when Sofia leaves with Zachery. Before he leaves the building, and as dawn is approaching, Zachery and Ash have their final confrontation. Zachery is able to use the dawn and push Ash into the morning's rays. He is destroyed, and then pushes Sofia into a dark space to begin her education in the rules of survival as a creature of the night. Having disposed of Ash and again in possession of his sword, Zachery is free to continue his vendetta against the larger vampire community. |
| Ash is the spwan of Radu of Transylvania, the evil vampire from the Subspecies series. Ash emerged in post-Ceausescu Romania as the leader of a group of vampires who own a Bucharest nightclub, Club Muse. Many of Bucharest's social elite patronize the club, unaware of its true nature and of the labyrinth of rooms that exists some eighty feet below them, providing many enterances and exits for Ash's illicit activities Ash is the master of the vampires at the club and rules them as an autocratic monarch. |
