Puppet Master I & II

The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

Compsed And Performed By Richard Band

Liner Notes

Rasied and educated in Italy, Richard  Band belongs to a remarkable family of artistic talent, which include his grandfather Max, Albert, his film-producing father, and brother Charles, who's followed in thes cinematic footsteps as director and head of Full Moon Entertainment.

Richard's prodigious output neatly matches any of his family's.  Although only in his late thirties, Richard's already on of Hollywood's most prolific film composers, with almost four dozen feature scores to his credit.  Richard's musical career started with a European tour at the age of 13, playing his original jazz and rock compositions across the continent.  After four precocious years, he returned to America and shaped these talents for film composing.  Richard's first score came about with 1978's "Laserblast", and he hasn't stopped since.

When I approached Richard to compose "Puppet Master"'s score in 1989, he was already a well-known artist for both electronic and orchestral soundtracks.  Since I was looking for a completely synthesized score, his state-of-the-art studio was particulary impressive.  Having worked with such top film composers as Pino Donaggio ("Touist Trap", "Crawlspace" and "Catacombs") and Lalo Schifrin ("The Seduction"), I had learned that a strong, melodic theme was an essential starting point for an effective soundtrack.  Richard noted the scenes in "Puppet Master" that needed music, and played the beauiful main theme for me a few weeks later.  I was instantly confident that his score would hit all the dramatic marks.

Along with the carnival motifs that weave throughout "Puppet Master", I felt it was important that the music should have an entertaining and hypnotic tone to play up against the dangerous images.  It was always claer to me that inanimate puppets were eerie and distrubing when coming back to life, rather than beging particularly horrifying.  I filmed "Puppet Master" for that chillingly understated tone, and Richard's score confirms my atmosphere of mirth and madness, suspense and surprise, merriment and menace.  If you listen carefully to the film's haunting melodies, you'll begin to hear what a versatile and inventive composer Richard Band is.
