David DeCoteau Biography

David DeCoteau was born on January 5th 1962.  At the age of eighteen DeCoteau moved from his native Portland, Oregon to Los Angeles to pursue a career in film.   In Los Angeles he began work at Roger Coman's company, New World Pictures.  DeCoteau worked under James Cameron as a production assistant on John Carpenter's ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK.

After years of work, DeCoteau finally got his big break thanks to legendary producer Charles Band.  In 1986, Band hired the twenty-four year old DeCoteau to direct the Empire Pictures hit DREAMANIAC.  After band got a look at the picture, he turned to DeCoteau and held up 10 fingers.  DeCoteau remembers asking "What does that mean?"  Band responded, "ten pictues deal...".  The next day the cover of Daily Variety read "DECOTEAU SIGNS PIC PACK WITH EMPIRE.

The deal began a fifteen year relationship with Band's Empire Pictures and later Full Moon.    His early efforts launched the careers of Scream Queens Linnea Quigley, Brinke Stevens and Michelle Bauer.

David DeCoteau's carrer has been documented in books like "Filmmaking on the Fringe" by Maitland McDonaugh, "Cult Flicks" by Carol Schwartz, and "The Sleaze Merchants" by John McCarty.  His career was also higlighted in the four part SHOCK CINEMA documentary series.

By the early 90's, DeCoteau was working for Charles Band's Full Moon Pictures directing PUPPET MASTER 3, 6 & 7,  and producing TRANCERS II.

In the fall of 1999, after 25 movies and 9 years, DeCoteau left the comforts of a regular salary to pursue his dream of heading his own production company.

Started on November, 1991, Rapid Heart Pictures put into production its first offical feature, ANCIENT EVIL: SCREAM OF THE MUMMY.  With Rapid Heart Pictures, David DeCoteau, the president / executive producer delivers eight horror features per year.  The varied bunch will be aimed at world wide theatrical, cable and direct-to-video release.

As DeCoteau, who divides his time between homes in Los Angeles, Canada and Romania, ventures into the new millennium with a full slate, he looks back over the past 20 years with fond recollection.

"Several publications have called me the 'New King of the B's and say I'm picking up where Roger Corman left off.  Roger even once said to me, 'I hear you're beating me at my own game.'"

DeCoteau insists his films are always for fans, saying, "I have a huge amount of respect for the fans of the genre.  I try not to cheapen the movies, regardless of their budgets, I want them to have fun with and enjoy everything I do."

As his former boss, Charles Band once said, "No one can do what you do, David."  This is what sets DeCoteau apart from his peer and will keep Rapid Heart Pictures and its new product thriving.  DeCoteau has only just begun.
