| Suffocation - Souls To Deny | ||||||
| Death metal legends Suffocation have returned with a modern day brutality assault in their newest release Souls to Deny. The band's earlier albums are considered benchmarks in metal history, so the expectations for their new record were high to say the least. The first song, "Deceit" is a blistering track that puts to rest any fears of Suffocation losing it after all their time away. The vocals on the record show little varation and stick with a monotone growl but this works actually works out somehow and doesnt get boring. Mike Smith gallops along on his drum kit before unleashing blast beat after furious blast beat. He helped set the standard for death metal drumming and reminds us all why. The guitars sound heavy and the somewhat dirty production adds to this, making them sound even more destructive. Finally,the low end rumble of the bass joins up with the grinding drums and creates the totally pummeling sound we all demand in our brutal death metal. Souls to Deny is a great release and recommended if you want to get your face ripped off by something devasting and brutal. If you are looking for something that pushes the boundaries of modern death metal then you might be let down but I think this record accomplishes its goal quite well. It says that Suffocation are back, they havent lost a step after all their time off and are still able to destroy and wreak havoc with the best of them.
