Thanos seized control of the reality-altering Cosmic Cube and attempted to use it to take over the entire universe, after a battle with some of Earth's heroes, Thanos was defeated, and thought destroyed. Revived, Thanos discovered that Death had abandoned him. Thinking that he could regain her attention by annihilating all living things, he sought the power of the infinity-gems. Thanos created a synthetic soul-gem to hold the energies of the other six. With it, he planned to extinguish the stars one by one. Again, stopped by a contingent of Earth's heroes Thanos was Believed incapacitated for eternity.
Thanos was brought back to life by Death itself, who believed the universe to be unbalanced, and therefore half its population should be wiped out. Death augmented Thanos' powers to even more incredible levels. He then planned to re-assemble the infity Gems and harness their combined power with the Infinity Gauntlet. Ultimately successful, Thanos killed half the life in the universe. This was 'un-done' by heroes from across the entire universe Thanos fought the heroes and then allied himself with them against Nebula, Thanos escape notice of his enemies and abandoned his previous identity, assuming the role of a quiet farmer.
After becoming bored, Thanos had many adventures he found himself allied with Earth's heroes as much as he did against them.
The Silver Surfer sought Thanos to discern Death's motives for making him her new consort. Enraged, Thanos beat Surfer to death and delivered his body to Death's realm himself. Believing Death to be unappreciative, Thanos revived the Surfer and left, further insulting Death who cursed the Titan with immortality, forever barring him from her embrace.
Thanos had since rejected his love affair with Death, preferring to kill for himself rather than other's whims and wishes. He began to fancy himself his own death-god.

POWERS : Thanos possesses superhuman abilities due to his nature as an Eternal. Superhuman strength, reflexes, endurance and agility. His skin in nearly invulnerable, particulary against heat, cold, electricity, radiation, toxins, aging, and disease. Even before he was 'cursed' by Death to never die, he could survive indefinately without air, food or water. His mind is immune to most forms of psychic attack, and he can fire bolts of psionic, cosmic and plasma based energy from his hands or eyes. He usually employs a hovering chair with additional offensive weapons and has the ability to teleport fantastic distances.
