| Simple PVC Pennywhistle | |||||||||
| Here are my directions for making a D pennywhistle. You will need a drill with a 3/16" bit, about 12 inches of 1/2" PVC pipe, a small brass screw, a knife, a small file (or dremel), a saw (I use a compound miter saw), and about 1 inch of 1/2" dowel rod. This is my first draft of the instructions. It definitely needs pictures to be clear enough to be usable. | |||||||||
| Cut a piece of 1/2" PVC pipe 11 3/4" long. Drill 3/16" holes at 1 5/8", 2 5/8", 3 3/8", 4 3/16", 5 1/8", 5 7/8", and 10 1/2" from one end. Use a knife to make the hole at 10 1/2" square. Make a blade out of the side of the square hole that is closest to the other holes. File away part of the inside of the pipe on the short side of the sqare hole. This is the windway. Cut a piece of 1/2" dowel that is about 1 1/4" long. Cut off a thin slice of the dowel on one side of it. This is the fipple. Insert the dowel into the pipe on the short side of the square hole. Drill a small hole on the short side of the pipe from the square hole, but on the opposite side and insert a small brass screw. Cut off a bit of the pipe at an angle on the underside of the mouthpiece. Tweak the hole, the fipple, and the windway to make it whistle clearly. Tune the whistle by enlarging holes to make the notes higher. Sand the whistle with 400 grit sand paper under water. The PVC dust is not good for your lungs. Take the whistle apart and wash it with warm soapy water. Let it dry thoroughly and then reassemble it. |

| I've got a new PVC whistle design that I'm working on that seems to be much better than this one. I'll post it once I get it perfected. | |||||||||
