Haydn

Joseph Hydn was born in 1732. He spent most of his life in or near Vienna, Austria. In 1760, at the age of 28, Haydn married a woman named Anna Maria Keller. Unfortunately, their marriage was unhappy, and after a few strained years, they separated and lived apart for the rest of their lives.

Haydn's creative activity spanned from 1750 to 1801, more than half a century (by one year). Although his greatest works did not emerge until later, he continued to develop musically to the end of his life. He was perpetually improving his work from series to series. He was never truly satisfied with his work, and thus he continually worked to make it better. Haydn was always trying to find new ways to express himself through music.

Haydn and Mozart first met in 1781, and from then on they were close friends. They maintained an attitude of respect and admiration for one another. Each thought the other was a musical genius, and each was. Although Mozart was taking lessons from Haydn, each learned a great deal from the other.
