The Other Hollywood (1999)
Directed by Anders Dalgaard. Starring Brooke Ashley, Max Steiner, Seymore Butts, and John Stagliano.
This is literally a warts and all look behind the scenes of the adult film industry as seen by some of the most prominent actors, actresses, directors, and producers working in porn today. We see the upside, but mainly the downside of this closed door industry.
Director Veronica Hart constantly whines that she and her directing peers were making art in the seventies and eighties, but that now it's all about exploitation. I think someone forgot to tell her that the whole point of porn isn't high art.
Then there's the hippy-dippy director who points the finger at other purveyors of filth,
yet doesn't seem to realise that he's up there with the best of the exploitation kings. Ron Jeremy also puts in his two cents, and seems like one of the few intelligent, level headed industry types. We also meet a number of the girls. Some are dimwitted, doe eyed starlets who've just got their break. Others are washed up, spat out veterans with hundreds of movies under their garter belt.
And then there's Max (pictured). Max Steiner (better known as Max Hardcore) has to be seen to be believed. If this guy didn't have the opportunity to fulfill all of his depraved fantasies onscreen, he'd have probably turned out to be one of the worst serial killers the United States has ever seen. We hear other directors badmouthing Max like there's no tomorrow. You could be forgiven for thinking that Seymore Butts is a religious zealot, rather than an equally guilty porn entreprenuer.
The final section of the film is the horror A.I.D.S part. This surprised me, since I assumed that porn stars of the nineties were safe due to frequent testing. Apparently though, the tests are as reliable as a two dollar watch.
John Stagliano and Brooke Ashley recall when they first found out they were H.I.V positive.
The Other Hollywood is an entertaining eye opener for the porn addict, casual pervert, or even the prudes out there. You'll be in stitches over some of the inane comments, and especially at the politically incorrect musings of Max Steiner.
