The Killbillies (2001)
Directed by Duke Hendrix. Starring Leon Fish,
Sven Johnson, and Duke Hendrix.
The Killbillies is an ultra low budget horror comedy produced in Australia by Hendrix-Fish films. The film revolves around a fued between two crazed families. The McCoy's, and the Lowborne's have been bitterly fueding following an unpleasant incident which involved the Lowborne's prize hog.
The hog ate Grandma McCoy, and Pa McCoy decides to send his sons Raymond, and Boy to kill
those Lowborne's once and for all. There's also a few zombies, aliens, sex with farmyard animals, hermaphrodites, surf music, and decapitations, which make for one bizarre movie.
The Killbillies is a cheap & cheerful entry into the world of zero budget filmmaking. It was made for a couple of grand, and all of the exteriors were shot in Sydney's Centennial park. To their credit, the filmmakers were able to make Centennial park look more like somewhere in the Appalachians. The Killbillies also features a number of memorable characters. Leon Fish is probably the most memorable as the extremely surly Pa. The confused pinhead known only as 'Boy' is also memorable, as are Gator and Raymond. These two wear disturbing looking flesh masks much like Leatherface from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
The film also has some impressive fx. The scene where Raymond gives birth to a zombie child is not only visually impressive, but also one of the funniest scenes in the movie. Some of the exchanges between Pa and the potty mouthed zombie infant are priceless. The hillbilly jokes fly thick and fast as well. The filmmakers poke fun at bestiality, inbreeding, crossdressing, and other facets of mountain man culture.
The Killbillies also tips its hat to splatstick classics like Evil Dead 2, Braindead,Demons, and of course, Redneck Zombies. It may not be heavy on plot, but like most splatstick movies, this isn't the point. The Killbillies works well as a beer and pizza movie. Liquid Monkey films are currently in talks with several distributors, so The Killbillies should be headed your way soon. Y'all check it out, ya hear?
