Mathew Bright's Freeway was an entertaining exploitation diamond in the rough way back in 1996. It was pretty much a breath of fresh air in a sea of mediocre and long forgotten mainstream releases. Freeway was a modern albeit incredibly violent re-telling of Little Red Riding Hood. This low budget direct to video sequel is also based upon a fairy tale... this time it's Hansel and Gretel.
'White Girl' has just been sentenced to 25 years in a womens correctional facility for posing as a hooker and beating and robbing Johns. In the facility she befriends Cyclona, a nutcase who was raped by her father at
the age of five. Cyclona returned the favor though , by stabbing the old man to death ( along with every other member of her family) when she turned 18. White Girl is also suffering from bulimea , and spends much of the movie throwing up what she's just eaten.
Vomiting is quite a talent for her. In one scene she projectile vomits all over a warder who's giving her grief from about twelve feet away. After being force fed , and locked in solitary for her projectile vomiting , White Girl wants out. Her and Cyclona make a break through the fence on a desperate run for Mexico. Cyclona knows a nun there called Sister Gomez , and she's sure that the penguin will offer them sanctuary.
Of course, the trip doesn't go as smoothly as planned. Cyclona turns out to be quite a murderous little sexual deviate. Along the way she kills an elderly couple, a guy fixing his car, and a couple of border patrol guards, among others. The excuse she gives White Girl every time she slashes someones throat , or disembowels them is invariably: "They were gonna rape me". When they finally get to Mexico and find Sister Gomez , we find out that the nun isn't all sugar and spice. With the aid of a few shady characters, Gomez is fattening the local children up , using them to film bizarre snuff movies , and then eating them and selling the meat to local vendors to use in their tacos. When White Girl finds out the horrible secret , she storms Gomez's hideout with a pair of automatic pistols. But Gomez isn't all she has to deal with... the cops are also massing outside ready to storm the place.
Although Freeway 2 wasn't as good as the first (but then again, how often is a sequel on par with the original) , it was better than I thought it would be. At times it meandered a little more than it should have , and the whole Sister Gomez subplot wasn't fleshed out as much as it could have been. It was still a moderately entertaining movie. Mathew Bright is obviously a fan of Women In Prison movies and exploitation classics like Foxy Brown and Taxi Driver. There was quite a bit of hat tipping to these kinds of films in Freeway 2. This movie had violence , lesbians, vulgarity, drugs, and a whole bunch of other entertaining ingredients that haven't been seen on celluloid since the glory days of exploitation. Even though it had its flaws , you should still at least rent this movie. It's an example of a dying breed which is nearing extinction. Unlike endangered animals , it's not poachers or habitat destruction killing off movies like this, but the all important studio quest for the widest audience demographic possible , thus making the (R) rating obsolete.
