The American Election Zip file 23kb (containing 3 Word files)
Level:
advanced
Grades: 1
Topic: American Presidential Elections
Skills developed: listening / reading
Short description: This lesson teaches students about the American electoral process. Students participate in a mock election, choosing which candidate they side with on several issues. Each student represents one state and casts their electoral votes to whichever candidate they agree with more.  Although this was a very challenging lesson, students were really interested in the process and had a lot of fun voting.

The Olympics Zip file 78kb (containing 1 Word file)
Level: advanced
Grades: 1
Topic: Olympics Trivia
Skills developed: speaking / listening / reading
Short description: Students form groups of 4. From each group a representative comes to the teacher to receive a question about an Olymoic athlete and then relays the question to his team. By reading or skimming the provided articles, the team finds the answer and then sends another representative to deliver the answer to the teacher and receives a new question. The student should try to recite the answer, rather than read it off the paper. The cycle continues until time or the questions are exhausted. The team with the most correct answers wins.

Respect Zip file 70kb (containing 1 PDF file)
Level: intermediate
Grades: 2
Topic: Respect
Skills developed: reading / writing
Short description: This lesson was used with Lesson 8 Unicorn II with a chapter focusing on Nelson Mandela. However this activity could be used with almost any lesson. It introduces students to the technique of 'brainstorming', which is quite useful for coming up with keywords for use in composition. In our lessons we added a specofoc grammar point to be used in the composition (You must use 'what' as a relative pronoun and 'that' as a conjunction.), but this is optional. We gave the students 15 minutes in class to work on their compositions, but only about 10% of them managed to finish on time. The rest took it for homework.

Short description: This activity was used in conjunction with a reading textbook chapter on womenfs suffrage and timed concurrently with the presidential election in the United States. It can and should be altered to the voting format of the ALTfs home country, since this is more of a cultural exchange lesson/activity than an English lesson.
