Specialized Structures of Skin
A. Hair
1.The main function of hair is protection from injury, sun, and foreign matter.
2. Parts of hair:
    a. shaft: the part that we se , consisted of dead cells.
    b. root: portion below the skin
    c. hair follicle: root with epithelial and connective tissue covering. If it is destroy, no new hair can form. Hair follicle cannot form at birth.
    d. papilla: bottom of hair follicle, contains capillaries
3. Hair grows in cycles, contary to popular belief, cutting or shaving has no effect on its rates of growth.
4. Arrector pili muscles contract in response to cold or fear, amking the hair stand up = goose bumps
B. Epidermal Glands
1 sebaceous glands: relatively inactive during childhood, generally attached to hair follicles
- largest and most numerous on the face and scalp are found all over the body, except in the palms or soles.
- in a few areas these glands are not associated with hairs but open directly onto the surface of the skin
- secrete sebum, an oily mixture of cholesterol, fats and other stuff

2. Sweat gland (sudoriferous glands): Its function is to help regulate body temperature. There are mostly on the forehead, soles and palms. It contains salts and waste product such as urea. There are two types of sweat glands: exocrine sweat glands and apocrind sweat glands.

- Exocrine Sweat Glands are the tiny coiled tubes with a ducts, they open on the surface of the skin.

- Apocrine Sweat Glands: usually associated with hair follicles. Their functions are to reduce moisture, inhibiting the growth of bacteria.

3. Ceruminous Glands: Modified sweat glands found in the ear canal
- Secretion is cerumen = ear wax

C. Nails
Nails are modified of epidermal cells and consists of tough keratin (pink color) because blood in underlying capillaries shows through.
The Structures of nail are
1. Nail bed: visible region beneath the body of the nail
- lacks of a stratum corneum

2. Root: the proximal edge of nail plate

3. Lunula: whitish cresent- shaped region near the root

4. Cuticle ( eponychium): under lunula, above the skin
- narrow region of epidermis spread onto the nail plate

5. Nail matrix: The epithelium beneath the lunula and around the nail root
- responsible for nail growth
