| I. Fertilization: about 300-500 million sperms introduced into vagina 1. Acrosome: secretes acrosine to cause sperm to move toward ovaries 2. Many sperm reach the mature ovum, but usually one penetrates and fertilizes. 3. Syngamy: when sperm penetrates, corona radiata surrounds egg. 4. Approximately 1/2 sperm carries an X chromosome, and 1/2 carries Y chromosome to determine gender. II. Implantation: attachment of the blastocyst to the endometrium in uterus 1. After fertilization cells begin divide (mitosis). 2. small cluster of cells. Other possibilities that can make to implant blastocyst in the uterus 1. Invitro fertilization: - fertilization in labortory dish - FSH has matter release many mature ovums - Sperm from father - Scientists observe cleavage - Implantation 2. Embryo transfer: - a husband artificially inseminates fertile female's ovum. - blastocyst is implanted into infertile mother III. Embryonic growth: - First in two months - Human is called embryo - Embryology is the study of development from fertilized egg to the 8th week to utero. - The parts and organs of embryo begin to develop. IV. Fetal Growth: Development of fetus from two months until birth, and body systems begin to develop. V. Parturition: Birth: consists of Labor (which help fetus expelledc from uterus to vagina and out of body by making progesterone levels full, and allows for involuntary muscle contractions. TrueLabor - contractions at regular intervals, and the cervix dilates False Labor- mother would be very painful, and contractions are not at regular because cervix, which allows water to break, does not dilate. |

| Three Stages of Labor: separated into three stages 1) Stage of Dilation: cervix dilates and enlarge about 10 centimeters; aminotic sac reptures, and water breaks 2) Stage of expulsion: delivery of body (fetus) 3) Placenta Stage: After birth until placenta is expelled ou tof the body via powerful contraction. |
