Matthayom Watthatthong School.
Seminar on The Practice of Using English.
I first became involved with the school when after the economic crisis in Thailand there was an urgent need to support students entering high school with no possible financial support for such an education. I was happy to support seven such students.
Afterwards we noticed that some of the classroom with 40 students in each class had no fans or air conditioning. With other supporters we donated ceiling fans to the class- rooms where such were urgently need.
Programme for improving the English speaking standards of Thai teachers.
By directives issued by the Ministry of Education in Thailand schools are to institute a programmed of teaching to their English teachers to improve their conversational ability, their reading and writing ability, and their conversation grammar.
The recently engaged new Principal, Khun Kalayanee Sinsakul, of the Thatthong Secondary school on Sukhumvit road near my home visited me to thank me for the assistance given hitherto in supporting students as well as the installation of ceiling fans in many of the warm class rooms.
But more importantly she now wanted my support as a voluntary adviser in the project for improving the speaking English standards of her teachers.
The Director and her Deputy have lunch with me.
The proposed project was to plan two three-day seminars for around 90 teachers with the following
suggested programme:
Three groups to be established with 30 teachers in each group to attend three classes over a period of
three days in March and again in October2002.
During the first seminar in March each group will have a specific subject for discussion during a full day
attendance in each class
.
Day one will concentrate on conversation
; Day two and three will concentrate on the grammar of speech.
During the second seminar in October the specific subjects will cover:
Day two and three on English language pronunciation.
; Day one on English language structure.
It was agreed that following the end of the last seminar an examination should be held to assess the success of the programme and award certificate of achievement to the teachers completing the course.
