Ministry for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Straight, & Transgender Christian Young Adults Formally Installed
FUEL, an outreach focused primarily on 18-35 year old GLBST Christians, was formally installed as a ministry of the Metropolitan Community Church of Austin at Freedom Oaks on Sunday, November 20th, 2005. Nathan Black & Jessica Leal were installed as the ministry founders & leaders.
Nathan & Jessica, along with a core group of young people and advisors, began Fuel in February of 2005. Their desire was to create a ministry in MCC that met the spiritual & social needs of young adults. They have accomplished this in a variety of ways, namely the weekly "FUEL cells" that have happened each week since inception. The "FUEL cells" focus primarily on spiritual growth, Christian education and imparting the values of progressive Christianity. Nathan & Jessica have also organized camping trips, ministry trips, a weekend at Six Flags, and local outings to see movies and listen to live music. FUEL now has over 50 members and 15 to 20 young people come each week. These numbers are steadily growing as word gets out. During the installation ceremony, an advisor to the group, Robert Stewart, PhD., provided a surprise gift of $7,000.00 to support the ministry's outreach activities.
FUEL's goals are to be a "caring, inclusive & progressive" ministry, in the same way MCC Austin is. They intend to:
Help reconcile people's spirituality with their sexuality
Promote emotional health, personal responsibility & sexual integrity
Foster spiritual growth & education
Support people in being everything they are committed to being
Develop the next generations of progressive Christian leaders
