The Untold Series:
Kimahri’s Shame
Kimahri looked around the howling peeks of
“Are we ready to begin?” Maester Kelk Ronso asked in his
deep booming voice, the very sound making Gagazet tremble. The mountain knew
this elderly Ronso’s strength, and bowed down before him. Kimahri hoped to be
the same someday. The newly horned Ronsos nodded, looking uneasily among their
brothers to see who would be first.
“Kimahri go first.” Kimahri stated, stepping into the ring,
giving his spear an experimental twirl, making some of the little Ronso squeal
in awe. Kimahri was proud to know some little Ronso thought so high of him
already. Biran, with his blonde fur already braided with the signs of his
defeated foes, also stepped forward.
“Brother Biran will fight Brother Kimahri.” Biran stated,
and a roar of approval echoed in the crowd, Gagazet going silent and peering
down at the warrior Ronso. With a mighty roar, Biran lunged forward, shoulders
before him in a bulldoze move, and Kimahri winced and staggered back, but
refused to show pain. Ronso warriors felt no pain, only victory! Kimahri
straightened, swinging his spear upward, Biran deftly dodging, casting a low
blizzard spell. Kimahri said nothing, shoulder heaving where the blizzard spell
had taken a part of his fur with it after it had ripped off. Enraged, Kimahri
swung his spear up again, and when it connected with his Ronso brother, Kimahri
almost grinned, sure victory would be his. He would be the strong Ronso, and
prove it to the mountain he lived on. Biran, giving a small snort, lunged
forward, ready to bulldoze the young Ronso again. Kimahri dodged this time,
bringing his spear deftly on the temple of his brother, hearing Biran’s roar of
pain. Biran’s small eyes blazed with the Ronso fire, and Kimahri readied his
spear, knowing Biran was no longer playing games. With another roar, Biran
lunged forward, quicker than Kimahri ever imagined, knocking Kimahri over, and
his spear flew into the startled crowd. Biran casted a blaze of spells, watching
as Kimahri lay on the hard ground of the now cold unyielding mountain. Kimahri
could not have lost, but the mountain howled now, icy winds tearing at his fur.
Kimahri stood up shakily, Biran being declared the winner, the Ronso cheering,
Yenke placing a huge paw on Biran’s shoulder.
“No.” Kimahri stated, and Biran looked at Kimahri, eyes
narrowing.
“Biran beat brother Kimahri; mountain already knows Kimahri
is weakling!” Biran boasted, and Kimahri shook his head again, refusing to
accept it. Kimahri could not fail, and yet Kimahri had.
“No.” Kimahri stated again, and Biran’s eyes narrowed, now a
slanted look of fury and rage. Angrily, Biran marched over to Kimahri, his face
thrust into the younger Ronso’s defiant face.
“Biran beat Kimahri!” Biran bellowed, and Kimahri shook his
head again. Biran roared, not wanting his victory to be spoiled by this
weakling Ronso, raised his paw, and did something that Kimahri could not have
been able to stop, not with Gagazet against Kimahri. The sound of Kimahri’s
horn being broken by Biran’s huge paws resounded in the now quiet mountain, and
Kimahri’s head lowered in shame as Biran held the horn mockingly in front of
the Ronso. It was the greatest dishonor to have a Ronso’s horn broken,
especially after a horn molt, when Ronso only had it for a short time. Kimahri
wasn’t sure whether to be shocked, angry, or ashamed. Kimahri felt all three,
especially the shame. Hastily picking up his spear, Kimahri dashed past the
pitying gazes of the Ronso, and ran down the mountain slopes, hearing Biran’s
bellows and Gagazet’s icy howls, blending together.
“Weakling Ronso! Hornless goatling!” The voices roared
together, making Kimahri feel the hot feeling of shame wash over him as he ran,
never once looking back.
