Moonlight
streamed though the open window of the castle, illuminating the two figures
that stood facing each other. One was a red head girl, who was in tears,
looking like a princess in the white dress she wore and the flowered tiara
placed delicately in her hair. The other was a black haired man, red eyes
glowing in the darkness, and he blended in perfectly, his black clothing
matching the shadows.
“Do
you really have to go?” the woman asked sadly, as the man turned away, looking
sad, but not wanting her to see. He didn’t want her to know how much this was
hurting him, how much pain it brought him just to know he was making her this
sad. But, she was his angel, his savoir, and the one thing that kept him going.
But now, it seemed he had no purpose here, only serving as dead weight. He knew
the castle needed ninjas with his skills, but he couldn’t stay here any longer.
Living with her and not telling her how he felt was eating him up inside.
“I
want to go…see the world. I’ll visit, I promise.” He said softly, squaring his
shoulders, trying to appear strong. He had grown up from that scrawny ninja boy
that would blush whenever she sent a wink his direction. He had become
stronger; still lean, but strong enough to make anyone proud. She had grown up
too, from that flat chested ninja who always fought
with Matsuri, to a mature, well figured one. He would defiantly miss her. It
had been five years since they had taken back the Byakuro castle, when they
were fifteen. A lot had happened over that time, the village had been restored,
the princess was back on the throne…
“Pochi…”
Sakura said softly, another tear escaping her big brown eyes, and Pochi
couldn’t help but brush it away, forcing a smile.
“Hey,
don’t cry alright? You’re making me feel bad.” Pochi said, trying to make light
of the situation, and succeeded, Sakura smiling a little through her tears. It
still hurt, the way she would probably forget about him, move on with her life,
but that’s why he was leaving. He didn’t want to be the unnecessary baggage she
had to cart along, and he did want to see the world…with a sigh, Sakura fiddled
with her necklace, a silver ring hanging off the chain. It was nothing fancy,
but Pochi had given it to her when they had found out that she was the Byakuro
princess. Sakura said that she would always treasure it, and Pochi would always
treasure when she had shyly given him a peck on the cheek, and then ran off,
giggling nervously. He would definitely miss her.
“Pochi…just
remember alright? Don’t be a stranger. The castle will be awful lonely without
you.” Sakura said painfully soft, piercing Pochi’s heart the way she looked
wistfully out the window, the stars twinkling merrily in the distance. That had
to be one of her favorite past times, star gazing. Pochi was the only one who
knew of the secret lake out in the woods, so deep, yet so close, the perfect
get away place, and extremely beautiful at night.
“I
won’t.” Pochi promised, and Sakura gave watery smile, giving him a crushing
hug, which he returned, savoring the feeling of the embrace, even if it meant
nothing to her, it meant everything to him. She still had the same hold over
him, the one that one had on another when they knew they loved the other. She
just didn’t know it, and Pochi could never tell her. Their friendship had grown
considerably, but Pochi… Pochi was sure that she didn’t feel the way for him
like he her. Or maybe he was just a coward, not wanting to express his
feelings. It had been a strict code not to show your emotions in battle, and
Pochi was certain this was an exception. A battle of the
heart. It was screaming to his mind that he was being foolish for leaving
her, but he ignored it.
“I want you to have this, to remember me by, I know it’s stupid, but I hope you like it.” Sakura said, reaching into the folds of her dress, pulling out a small katana, delicately strapped in a nicely decorated sheath. Pochi smiled, admiring it, taking it gingerly, not sure of what to say.
“Thanks,
I’ll treasure it forever.” Pochi whispered, and Sakura beamed, trying hard not
to break down sobbing. She would dearly miss him…
“Well,
I guess this is good bye. Oh, I sound so stupid now! Good bye Pochi. I hope you
have your fill of the world.” Sakura said, letting her
childhood friend go, and turning away, running off before Pochi could get in
another word. With a small sigh, Pochi walked to the balcony, the curtains
blowing in the wind like ghosts, ironically symbolizing the ghosts of the past
Pochi would leave behind. Hopping down the steep roofs of the castle, Pochi
reached the ground, dusting himself off before straightening his back and
starting off. When he reached the edge of the town, Pochi looked back, smiling
sadly.
“Bye
Sakura, know that I will always love you.” Pochi said lightly, turning away,
pulling his straw hat tighter over his eyes so nobody would notice the tear
that slipped down his cheek.
Will she remember? Pochi wondered, drawing his
stifling black cape around him tighter, trying to block off the fierce wind
that attacked him. It had been two years since he left her, and it had taken
that long just to realize the depth of his love for her. During those two long
years, it felt that it had been a dream. He had gotten over Sakura...somewhat.
He had found a little quaint village by a beautiful lake (that reminded him somewhat of the secret lake he and Sakura had...),
in need of some help from these wild bandits that just couldn't take a 'leave
me alone' for an answer. Pochi had seen that they were...put out of commission.
He had met the nicest people there, and maybe he could take the gang to go meet
them, it was a lovely little town. With another growl, the wind began attacking
full force, making the wind seep through the folds of his cloak, making Pochi
curse again, but decide to ignore it. That same, nagging question was tugging
at the corners of his mind, whispering annoyingly, will she remember me? Pochi sighed
again, fingering the katana hidden in the folds of his cloak, trying hard not
to bash his head against a nearby tree. This was getting harder. He had made up
his mind one night that he'd take her up on his promise to visit her. It wasn't
like it would be anything else, just a normal, friendly visit, right? Aw, Pochi, just
shut up already. I'm starting to talk to myself. Ugh! There I go again.
Pochi sighed, running a hand through his semi-spiky black hair, which had
failed to grow a pony tail. Not that it mattered, I mean, Hayashi hadn't grown
out his hair, had he? Just as he was about to talk himself
out of this, the castle came into view, and instantly he remembered the first
time he saw it. With Yume, Kaoru, and...Sakura. It was
as breath taking as he remembered. With a small intake
of breath to calm himself, Pochi started off, praying
that nothing would go wrong.
"Yume?!" Pochi asked amazed, seeing his old ninja friend in
the front of a nice looking house, but that wasn't the surprising thing. She
was surrounded by about ten children. Pochi instantly helped the always perky
Yume catch a little girl with brown pigtails about to fall from her Yume's hip.
She hadn't changed at all, her eyes still shinning and her mouth already curved
in a happy smile, her curly brown hair flowing from a tight bun.
"Pochi! Is that really you?! Oh it's so good to see you!" Yume exclaimed
happily, hugging Pochi, nearly crushing him to death. That woman may have not
made a ninja, but she certainly was as strong as one!
"Yume,
it's really me! Nice to see you too!" Pochi said
with equal enthusiasm, while Yume smiled happily. Deciding to ask something to
stop the descending quiet, Pochi asked, "Are they all yours...?" Yume
laughed daintily, a laugh worthy of a princess. That's probably why everyone
was so shocked that Sakura was the Byakuro princess and not Yume. Yume seemed
the ideal princess, while Sakura was the ideal female ninja. The two weren't
supposed to mix.
"Of course not! I baby-sit for some of the village people when they
have to go to work, but right now flu is going around, so a lot of the parents
are sick, so I take care of their children." Yume said,
smiling as the children clung to her legs, looking at Pochi with a mixed awe
and fear. Pochi smiled knowingly. It was common knowledge that Yume had always
loved children, and now hopefully she had some of her own. Pochi had to admit
he was happy for her.
"So
is Kaoru here?" Pochi asked, and Yume nodded, blushing at the mention of
his name. "Hey Yume, did you and him ever um..." Pochi stuttered,
already embarrassed at asking such a question.
"Didn't get the wedding invites I see." Yume said kindly, ushering the children inside and beckoning Pochi to follow her. Pochi smiled slightly, glad to see Yume hadn't changed. The only concern now was Kaoru. "Kaoru dear! Guess who's here!" Yume called, just as Kaoru entered, a small smile on his lips when he kissed Yume softly on the cheek, then turning to Pochi, his brown eyes widening in surprise when he saw Pochi. Then they narrowed in anger. The ninja that was standing before him was certainly grown, but that wasn't why Kaoru was so furious. Pochi had left in the middle of the night, never to be seen or heard from in two years, and unlike his forgiving wife, Kaoru was mad as well as hurt. Kaoru had seen the younger ninja as a brother, and what kind of brother would walk out on you without a farewell?
"Finally
shown your face again?" Kaoru asked silently, his voice deadly; cutting
through the silence like his sword did the tree in the woods when he was
training. Pochi flinched, but didn't show any emotion. Kaoru would have been
proud, but instead he was disgusted.
"Kaoru! He came back for a visit! Calm down!" Yume scolded, a frown
marring her pretty face, while Kaoru calmed down a little when he looked at his
beloved wife.
"Alright,
but I have nothing to say to him." Kaoru said stubbornly, turning a heel
and walking outside.
"Auntie
Yume, what's wrong with Uncle Kaoru?" A little girl asked cutely, sticking
her chubby thumb back in her mouth, twirling her braided black hair. Yume
squatted down by the girl, a kind smile on her face.
"Nothing
sweetie, don't worry about him. He's just cranky because he didn't get his nap.
Speaking of naps, shouldn't you all be in bed?" Yume said with fake stern,
and all the children giggled, running off to bed. With a smile plastered on her
face, Yume turned back to Pochi, who seemed downtrodden since his encounter
with Kaoru. "Don't worry about him, he's just upset. It'll take some time
to cool him down." Yume said softly, and Pochi looked away, not wanting
her to see his silent self-hatred for himself. He didn't deserve her kindness,
or anyone else's! He was so stupid and stubborn to have left everyone for his
own selfish reasons!
"What
about Hayashi? Does he hate me too?" Pochi asked bitterly, and Yume
sighed, wringing her hands on her dress.
"No
Pochi, he doesn't. He understands why you left, though he wouldn't even tell
me! The nerve!" Yume joked, managing to get a
small smile on Pochi's face. And that my
friends, is my best gift! Yume thought happily, while Pochi grinned back at
her, waiting for an answer. Jolting out of her gloating, Yume smiled again at
him. "Well, he's the new doctor in town, if you can believe that. I'm so
happy for him! But, I have no idea where he'll be, since practically the whole
town's sick. Who knows? Maybe Sakura will be with him." Yume offered, looking
at Pochi under her thick eyelashes, waiting for a response. Pochi instantly
straightened, trying to look cool, but she could sense something else there.
Yume always prided herself in being able to see through people, and judge them.
"Where
might he be?" Pochi asked calmly, trying hard to ignore the loud thumping
in his chest whenever he thought of the red haired girl that had stolen his
heart, and like a coward he had run away, wallowing in bittersweet memories for
two years.
"Well,
they should be at the castle now, seems like an advisor's sick." Yume said
disappointedly, and Pochi wondered what she was so sad about. Was she mad at
him too?
“Thanks
for everything Yume. You're a pal." Pochi admitted, Yume giving him one
more hug.
"Well,
have fun. Visit as soon as possible Pochi, and I mean
it. I have to put some meat on your bones." Yume scolded, Pochi grinning,
knowing he didn't need anymore, but seven years ago, he had desperately needed
something to fill him up.
"Thanks
Yume, I'll remember that." Pochi said, waving over his shoulder as he
walked out the door.
"Good
luck to you Pochi...I hope you can take this." Yume uttered softly, before
turning a heel and shutting the door softly, heading to the children who were
sprawled out all over the place. Planting a soft kiss on each forehead, Yume
tucked them in, smiling wistfully. If only I had one of these little angels...
Yume thought longingly, turning to stare out the window, seeing Kaoru's pacing
form in the yard. With a sigh, Yume pulled up a sleeve, walking out, knowing
there was some work to be done about her husband.
Pochi
wandered around the now deserted streets of Byakuro before summoning the
courage to actually walk past the stony guards and across the rickety bridge to
the front door of the castle. He smiled softly, remembering how he had first
gotten into the castle, swimming across the moat and then climbing up a wall,
Sakura stepping on that hidden trap...
Snap out of it Pochi! He scolded himself, but couldn't help but slowly
climb over the wall, heading over to the one he had climbed so long ago. The
castle had certainly improved, the missing chunks of it restored, so he could
see no place to climb through its cracks. The garden was lovely, flourishing
with any flower; their thick perfume hanging in the air like
a veil, the cobblestone path swept neat and clean of any sakura blossoms
that might fall from the pink leaved trees nearby. Sakura... the name was
whispered on the wind, and Pochi sighed again, running a hand through his hair,
a nervous habit he had gotten from a friend in the little village, Teysusha, a jumpy little boy with a big heart. Kicking
himself out of his reminiscing, Pochi made his way to the dojo, located
conveniently behind the castle, as he heard a sparring match going on in there.
Peeking through the rice paper screen doors, Pochi could see nothing, so silent as a mouse, he opened it and closed it softly, not
wanting to disturb the pair. His eyes widened when he recognized one of them,
still in his trademark black cape, which looked as stifling as his, his almost
white hair pulled into a small ponytail. Hayashi didn't look any different, and
when he noticed Pochi, he stopped, the person he was sparring with also halted,
glancing at the red eyed man curiously. Hayashi straightened, looking at Pochi
with interest, an uncomfortable silence descending upon the wooden dojo.
"It's
been a long time." Hayashi said softly, breaking the silence, and Pochi
nodded slightly, tilting his head to one side.
"It
has. So you don't hate me?" Pochi asked, and Hayashi's eyes twinkled, the
only thing that showed under his cape.
"Pochi?"
he asked in a taunting voice, and Pochi's natural reaction was to respond.
"Hm?"
he asked, almost slapping himself, for Hayashi's voice that once held taunting
now held a little superiority.
"Hmm, hmm." Hayashi said, and Pochi blushed furiously, cursing
how Hayashi knew him too well. Hayashi seemed to know why he left, and why he
had came back. D*** him for being such a mind reader.
Hayashi grinned as Pochi sighed, still blushing. The sparring partner in the
dojo had no clue what was going on, but Hayashi stopped him before he could
excuse himself. "Pochi, I would like you to meet my apprentice,
Kenji." Hayashi stated, Kenji bowing politely, and it was only then did
Pochi notice the shock of red hair the jutted out in every direction, his black
eyes twinkling.
"Nice to meet you Kenji." Pochi said politely, and
Kenji nodded, his eyes still full of mischief. He looked so much like Sakura...
as if sensing his thoughts, Hayashi coughed slightly.
"Well,
Pochi, I'm sure you'd like to see the castle again. It's truly changed. Kenji, why don't you show him around?" Hayashi asked,
and Kenji nodded slightly, and Pochi was a little disappointed. Okay, very
disappointed, and Hayashi noted this. "I have to go and tend to some more
sick, this town is plagued, and the sickness is very dangerous, but thank god
it's not contagious." Hayashi said, quickly excusing himself, and leaving
the two men alone, sizing each other up. Pochi noted he was lean, like himself,
and would be very speedy, also like himself. After a moment or so of sizing
each other up like they were in battle, Pochi grinned, rubbing the back of his
neck nervously.
"Alright,
since I haven't properly introduced myself to you I'm-" Pochi started, but
Kenji cut him off.
"The
great ninja Pochi, I know. Sakura talks about you often." Kenji said
devilishly, grinning at Pochi's look of shock. Pochi tried to ignore the
flutter he felt in his chest, knowing that Sakura still thought about him made
him feel happy, to say the least. "Well, we should get going if you want
to see the entire castle by dark; it's been added to a lot." Kenji stated,
walking out of the dojo, Pochi following uneasily. More
secret passage ways? By the time he was sixteen, he had known every nock
and cranny in the castle, but thinking about re-mapping his whole mental map of
the castle was mind boggling. With a sigh, Pochi followed a very eager Kenji
around, enjoying the company of this young man. He would have made a fine
ninja. Pochi thought silently, his lips twisting into a frown. It seemed that
everyone had put their ninja training behind them and moved on, knowing that
there would be no other war that would need their skills, but Pochi wondered
when he would let go.
"I
don't see why you have to be so rude to him! He’s our friend!" Was the
first thing that Hayashi heard when he neared Yume and Kaoru's house, and he
wondered what was going on. Yume and Kaoru rarely
fought, if they ever did.
"Hayashi." Kaoru greeted gruffly, and Yume smiled at the
silent man, offering him a warm cup of tea.
"What
brings you here?" Yume asked kindly, her voice once again soft, and
Hayashi smiled, though his cloak wouldn't let them see it. Hayashi still wanted
to have something to keep his past in tact, and this cloak was his father's,
the only thing that was salvaged for him actually. Not wanting to dwell on past
matters, Hayashi cocked his head.
"Pochi's
back." Hayashi said simply, knowing that they already knew, just wanting
to confirm his suspicions. Kaoru's stiffening at Pochi's name confirmed it, and
Hayashi sighed, sipping some warm tea from his worn cup.
"We
know." Yume said softly, glancing at her husband expectantly, but he
offered nothing. Hayashi sighed again, taking another sip of tea, wondering how
Yume made it so good. Maybe it was a wife thing? Hayashi downed the cup,
politely declining when Yume offered another.
"Why
did you visit Hayashi?" Kaoru asked stiffly, and Hayashi smiled lightly.
He knew that Kaoru was hurt that his surrogate little brother would walk off
without a word, but Hayashi didn't expect him to understand. Yume had always
been there for him, as Pochi Sakura, but it seemed that it was the feeling that
ate in his stomach, the one that Hayashi knew too well. Matsuri... he hadn't seen or heard from the feisty ninja that had
taken his heart and left, but she had probably told Yume or Sakura, perhaps
both, where she was going, and neither had breathed a word of where she could
be.
"You
know why." Hayashi responded, his thoughts only occurring in a matter of
seconds, and Kaoru sighed, Yume excusing herself to go check on the children.
It seemed that she didn't like the tense atmosphere. Well, neither did Hayashi,
but someone would have to break the news to him, and
everyone had tried, even Sakura, but she hadn't gotten through his stubborn
hide.
"I don't see why you stuck up for him like that, when he abandoned you." Kaoru stated stubbornly, and Hayashi sighed again, fiddling with his teacup silently.
"He
had his reasons, and I understand." Hayashi stated softly, and Kaoru
snorted, but didn't say anything. "I'm sure that he didn't want to live
like he was, just like Matsuri..." Hayashi said, letting the girl's name
roll off his tongue, trying to hide the longing in his voice. Kaoru noticed,
but didn't say anything that might enrage the other ninja, knowing Hayashi’s
skills were as sharp as ever, while his had been a little rusty, and he had to
admit, he was a bit ashamed. Now that Pochi was back, he would train harder so
he wouldn't have a weakness in front of his fellow ninja.
"And
what reason was that? He seemed perfectly happy." Kaoru argued, and
Hayashi let this grin light his face. The knowing grin he used whenever he had
a point that he wanted to shove into the other's face, though nicely.
"You
think he was happy to live in your shadow? Follow your every command like a
slave?" Hayashi asked, and Kaoru opened his mouth to protest, but Hayashi
held up a hand. "Sure, in the beginning he didn't mind, but it did get
annoying until it was just a pain. Then...he had to face his biggest
problem." Hayashi said softly, not wanting to reveal to everyone Pochi's
affection to a certain girl, no, now she was a woman. It was Pochi's place, not
his, and Hayashi was glad that he was the only one that knew of Pochi's crush
on the red head. Kaoru said nothing and Hayashi sighed, getting up, deciding
his point had been made, and his good deed for the day was done. "Tell
Yume thank you for the tea. I might visit again soon." Hayashi stated,
drawing his cape tighter around him as he exited the house, leaving Kaoru to
brood in his thoughts, and Yume to lean against a wall in silence, pondering
every word that was spoken between the two men.
"And
that concludes the tour of the castle!" Kenji stated happily, sounding
like a tour guide. But then again, he probably liked showing people around the huge
castle. Pochi had to admit, if he was impressed when he first came here, he was
astounded now. The castle was bigger than ever, with loads of traps, which
Kenji had failed to point out, especially the one where he got hit very hard on
the head with some kind of mallet. With a sigh, Pochi began rubbing the back of
his head, kind of disappointed that he hadn't seen Sakura, but then again, she
was a princess, or probably queen right now. The thought made him shudder. It
was hard enough talking to her as a princess, and a queen must be near
impossible. "Hey Pochi!" Kenji exclaimed,
waving a hand in front of the older ninja's face, trying to snap him out of his
reverie.
"Huh?"
Pochi asked, and Kenji grinned, looking a little fiendish.
"Oh,
I know what you're thinking about." Kenji gloated, and Pochi instantly
sweat dropped.
"I
don't know what you're talking about." Pochi said calmly, trying not to
notice the devilish gleam in Kenji's eyes.
"C'mon,
let's go talk to her!" Kenji stated, grabbing the older ninja's arm, and
Pochi wondered where respect had gone for their superiors as Kenji dragged him
along.
"Wait!
Don't you think we'll get in trouble?" Pochi asked, digging his feet into
the plush carpet, knowing that sometimes when he tried to talk to his friend,
he got severely scolded by an advisor he and Sakura hated with a passion, but
she wasn't allowed to drop him for he had been in the palace forever. Kenji
gave him a look that stated, 'I'm important so they won't do anything to me,
and why are you acting so pathetic?' and Pochi sighed, running a hand through
his hair again.
"We
won't, I promise. Now c'mon! I heard she's here today, and she's
not always gonna be here y’know." Kenji stated plainly, and Pochi sighed,
sucking in some breath to try and calm himself again.
Following along the energetic young apprentice, Pochi wondered if Sakura had
changed at all. Stop worrying! She's
practically your best friend besides Hayashi! Pochi scolded himself, but
why was it so stomach churning that he was going to see her again?
Chapter 4: Acquaintances
Sakura
sighed slightly as a whole herd of woman fussed and pampered her, fixing her
hair or applying some sort of make up on to her pale face. All were jabbering
away at how beautiful she looked. When they were done, a shy girl held up a
hand mirror to her face, silently begging for approval. She sure didn’t look
beautiful, in fact, with all the gunk they had globed
on her face, she thought she resembled a clown she had seen once when a
traveling caravan had stopped at the castle. Sakura forced a smile though, just
so the servants wouldn’t feel bad. After all the servants had filed out of the
room, she immediately headed over to a basin full of warm water and scrubbed
vigorously, cursing her ‘princess wardrobe’. She sighed, glancing out the open
window, the only portal to the outside world. She could see the tiptop of the
sakura trees, the clouds floating by lazily as the sun beamed down on the land.
Her families land. Ugh! Sakura hated this! She wished she could be out there
with Hayashi, helping him with his patients, learning little bits and pieces
about being a doctor. Hayashi had become her best friend after Pochi had left,
not because he used to be Pochi’s, but simply because Hayashi was a nice silent
guy with a big heart who listened to Sakura’s problems like Pochi had done. Pochi…Sakura wondered where he was now.
She missed him dearly, fingering the ring that hung off its light silver chain.
It was nothing fancy, but Sakura was never seen without it, and nobody had
dared questioned who had given it to her. With a sigh, she walked briskly over
to her room, opening the door slowly, knowing if she flung it open, she’d break
another priceless vase or something. Sakura hated this princess life. She had
desperately wished that Yume had been it, the real thing, but fate decided to
laugh in her face and make her the missing Byakuro princess legend foretold
about.
“Sakura!” Sakura was jolted out of her musings when she saw Kenji barging
through. Sakura smiled at him slightly, and then put on a mock stern face.
“Kenji!
How dare you barge into a Princess’s room?” Sakura mock scolded, and Kenji
grinned, putting his hands behind his head, his eyes twinkling mischievously.
“Got you a present.” Kenji stated happily, and Sakura smiled good naturally. Whenever Kenji said that, he usually meant
he would sneak her out of the castle. He at least had some freedom. “C’mon, we
don’t have all day your majesty.” Kenji said, giving a fake bow, and grabbing
Sakura’s hand and dragging her out of the room and face to face with a certain
red eyed ninja.
“Pochi…”
Sakura whispered, and Pochi grinned, rubbing the back of his head sheepishly.
She hadn’t seen him in two years and now he decided to show up after all this
time? Suddenly she threw her arms around him in a big bear hug, a thing that
was frowned on by her Manners Mistress. “Pochi it is so good to see you! How’ve
you been?” Sakura asked happily, not noticing Pochi’s blushing face, only
inches from hers.
“F-F-Fine.” Pochi stuttered, not used to being this close to Sakura. If she had been beautiful when he had left, she was drop dead gorgeous now. Sure, he had met beautiful women during his travels, none of them made him feel as awkward as when he was with Sakura.
“That
is so good to hear! You had me so worried!” Sakura exclaimed, hugging him
harder, nearly suffocating him, but somehow, he didn’t mind. These moments with
her meant the world to him, even if Sakura didn’t know. She was the only thing
that had kept him going during his grueling journey. Her smiling face was with
him whenever he had felt he couldn’t go on further. And now he was back with
the real her, not just some memory constructed her.
“Sorry
I had you worried.” Pochi apologized, not being able to think of anything else
to say. She had that affect on him, when she was close to him like this… As if
sensing his thoughts, Sakura pulled away, a huge grin on her face.
“It’s
really good to see you again Pochi. How long do you think you’re going to
stay?” Sakura asked, and Pochi had to bite back, ‘as long as you want me to’.
Instead
he said, “For a couple of days if you don’t mind.” Sakura grinned in delight,
and punched the air excitedly.
“Yeah! No problem Pochi! Stay as long as you want!” Sakura said happily, and
Pochi blushed again, trying to fight down the warmth that was spreading
throughout his whole body. It felt good to know she actually wanted him here,
like he wanted to be with her.
“I
guess you like my present.” Kenji said, and Sakura giggled while Pochi blushed
again.
“Yes,
I love my present, baby brother.” Sakura said, and Pochi gaped at Kenji and
Sakura. Sure they had looked so much alike, but how had Kenji survived the
Kabusu attack on the Byakuro castle? As if hearing his thoughts again, Sakura
turned around. “My mother barely survived the attack, and fled to a nearby
village, where people cared for her until Kenji was born. She… died during
labor.” Sakura said softly, and Pochi wished with all his heart he could take
all the pain away that Sakura had to experience. It didn’t matter to him he
would suffer, but as long as his love would never have to be sad.
“Sorry
to hear that.” Pochi said awkwardly, and Sakura smiled sadly at him, the look
piercing his very existence. But then again, she was his very existence.
“It’s
not like it’s your fault, but thanks anyway Pochi.” Sakura said softly,
seemingly sad, and Pochi felt his heart squeeze
painfully in his chest. All he wanted to do then was hold her and comfort her,
telling her everything would be all right, but he stayed rooted in place.
Suddenly, a servant appeared, the reunion shattered.
“Princess! Here you are! Come now! His lordship is waiting!” The servant
beckoned, scurrying of as Sakura rolled her eyes, but gave a wave good bye,
following the servant out the room.
“Lordship?” Pochi asked, and Kenji scowled, turning to Pochi, as if the very word
upset.
“His
*Lordship* is Prince Zai. He is such a… a…” Kenji said,
trying to think of the most vile curse word he could call Prince Zai. On the
other hand, Pochi was thoroughly confused. What did a Prince want with Sakura?
“Why
do you hate him? What did he do that was so horrible?” Pochi asked, and Kenji
whirled at him, his lean body shaking with contained rage.
“He
acts like I’m a kid! Even you treat me better than he does, and I’ve known him
longer when we just met! He’s a vile snake who needs a good butt kicking!”
Kenji fumed, and Pochi cocked his head to look at the young apprentice for
Hayashi. Surely there was another reason for him to hate this man so? He could
understand why he was mad, Kaoru had sometimes treated him like a little kid,
but he never actually hated him.
“Anything
else you might want to add?” Pochi asked, wanting to know more about this
Prince who had requested Sakura’s presence. Kenji stopped fuming, and looked at
Pochi, his black eyes probing his eyes for anything that would explain his
sudden interest in the Prince. With a small sigh, Kenji motioned for him to
follow him.
“You
might want to see this for yourself.” Kenji stated, walking off, Pochi
following curiously.
Pochi
walked silently after Kenji, where they entered a nicely furnished room,
beautiful and rich in every way. There were tapestries, oriental fans, a lush
carpet, all extremely beautiful, but Kenji ignored it, sitting next to Sakura
on a plush couch, who had looked up when she heard
Kenji and Pochi enter.
“Hello,
and who do we have here?” Pochi looked to see a richly dressed man, who
screamed Prince. His posture was relaxed, yet proper, sitting in a stiff back
chair. His blonde hair was tucked back neatly, and his blue eyes seemed cold
when he saw Pochi. Obviously he was a foreign Prince.
“This
is Pochi, my friend I was telling you about, and of course you know Kenji.”
Sakura said, smiling, but Kenji looked anything but happy; glaring at whom Pochi
was sure was Prince Zai. Pochi was positive he felt distain coming from both
Prince Zai and Kenji, with equal venom. Seems that the hate Kenji shared with
Zai was neutral. “Pochi, I’d like you to meet Prince Zai. He’s my… fiancé.”
Sakura said, still smiling, but now instead of comforting him, it froze his
heart. His Sakura…engaged?
Pochi sighed, letting the wind ruffle his hair, and starring up at the moon with a longing and sadness that weighed down on him heavily. Sakura, engaged? That couldn’t be possible! And yet, here he was, heartbroken, though silent. At least Sakura would be happy, no doubt about that, the way her face lit up when she was talking to Zai, though she was always smiling and happy, rarely sad.
“Sakura.” Pochi whispered longingly, letting the wind carry her name on its
wings, and he sighed, starring back out into the small, gleaming lake. Their lake. Pochi wondered if Sakura had ever shown Zai
their secret place, where they often snuck out to escape the suffocating order
of the castle, and just… talk. He closed his eyes, leaning against the log that
served as their chair when they sat here, starring up at the stars while Sakura
giggled and smiled. He could remember, with frightening clarity, when he had
given her that ring, and his hand instinctively to his cheek. Sakura… he thought again, letting his
mind slip back to the past for once, to escape the reality of now.
“C’mon Pochi!” Sakura called, laughing as she ran ahead, twirling and skipping, very
un-princess like behavior, though with Pochi, her considered best friend, she
could be anyone she pleased. Pochi just smiled, following her slowly as she
made her way to the side of the lake, plopping herself down happily while
patting the place next to her. “C’mon Pochi! Tell me
about outside Byakuro! What’s going on?” Sakura asked in girlish excitement,
which soon spread to Pochi, who animatedly began talking, deep into the night,
though watching Sakura intently, memorizing her every smile, cherishing her
every laugh, which lifted his heart so much, yet pained it at the same time.
His hand went to his pocket, where he had kept it for so long. It wasn’t
anything special, but… but… while outside of town, he had seen it in one of the
stores, and immediately he thought of Sakura, though, it seemed that she seemed
to be plaguing his thoughts more often now.
“Uh, Sakura?” Pochi asked, already blushing a little, letting her name roll off his
tongue, in what he hoped didn’t sound like too much longing. After all, she
thought that they were just friends, very good friends at best. Sakura turned
from the twinkling stars and smiled, warming his heart even more at the sight.
“Hmmm?” She asked, eyeing him intently, making Pochi blush an even brighter
shade of red, and he turned and rubbed the back of his head sheepishly. She
looked so beautiful in the moonlight.
“Um… this is for you.” Pochi
stuttered sheepishly, drawing out the plain silver ring, though engrave in it
was a design of beautiful vines, with a bloom of flower here and there. Pochi
didn’t know what had possessed him to do such a thing as to buy it, but then
again, he marveled, glancing at Sakura’s utterly happy expression, he did.
“Oh wow Pochi! It’s so
beautiful!” Sakura gushed, taking it gently out of his hand, not noticing that
Pochi’s face had turned an even deeper shade of red with the contact of her
fingertips on his palm. Sakura quickly unhooked her plain silver chain she wore
around her neck, which she jokingly called, ‘the only jewelry that wasn’t a
leash’. Only her most prized possessions go here, she had once said to him,
grinning and winking, since the chain goes right over my heart. “Thanks so much
Pochi, it’s so pretty.” Sakura said, looking down to admire
it on her chain, giggling slightly while Pochi just stared at her, soaking in
her beauty like a dehydrated man would water. The ring wasn’t the only
thing that was beautiful.
“It’s no problem.” Pochi
stuttered, cursing his shyness, and Sakura turned to him, eyes sincere with
thanks, making Pochi’s heart skip a beat.
“Thanks so much, Pochi.” Sakura repeated, leaning forward, and closing her big brown eyes.
She’s going to kiss me! Pochi’s mind half screamed half rejoiced. His face rose
to an amazing red, and when her lips connected with his cheek, he felt himself
blush even redder, if that was even possible. The smooth satin feel of her
lips, the flowery smell of her hair, it was what Pochi would have defined
heaven as. It seemed all to soon when she broke away,
grinning and laughing, jumping up and skipping off. “Can’t
catch me Pochi!” She laughed, dancing away as Pochi looked after her, a
hand on the cheek her lips had caressed, a dreamy look he could not suppress
floating over his face. Sakura… He thought, getting up and chasing after her,
memorizing her form as she danced away from him, red hair flowing and brown
eyes laughing.
Pochi
opened his eyes, staring back up at the moon, stars shimmering in the
background.
“Sakura…”
He said again, closing his eyes as he allowed himself to be drawn back into the
past.
Chapter 6: The Gift of Hope
“Yo Pochi! Good morning!” Kenji stated happily, slinging an arm around Pochi’s shoulder’s, whose only response was to yawn. He had stayed out remembering the past longer than he thought he would, and had only gotten a wink of sleep before Kenji had burst through. “Didn’t get much sleep last night, eh? Well, don’t worry. Zai has that affect on people.” The end of Kenji’s sentence dripped with distain, and Pochi glanced at him with a little curiosity.
“Why
do you hate Zai so much?” Pochi asked, though it was a little apparent why
Pochi hated Zai, though not Kenji, who seemed to be an all around friendly guy.
Kenji instantly was steaming, eyes flashing as he shook with barely concealed
fury.
“He-He
treats me with disrespect, and he’s nice to no one but Kaze and Sakura!” Pochi
inwardly winced at the name of the hated advisor of the castle,
that no one seemed to like, but only kept around since most were afraid
of him. He seemed to feed off that fear. “And he… doesn’t even love Sakura!”
Kenji finished with a shout, eyes flashing while Pochi’s own eyes widened with
disbelief. What wasn’t there to love about Sakura? She was so kind, loving, and
gentle, though determined, not to mention beautiful…
“Not
love Sakura?” Pochi said, with probably such a surprise that Kenji grinned, eyes
suddenly widening with realization.
“Pochi?” Kenji said with just as much gloating and smugness Hayashi had
whenever he was about to say his knowing of Pochi’s feelings.
“Hmm?” Pochi immediately began silently kicking himself when it slipped his
lips, but he wasn’t one that could stop his reflexes.
“Hmm, hmm.” Kenji said, grinning haughtily, with smugness that only Hayashi
possessed, since he was the only one who knew, until now. Pochi hung his head,
grinning sheepishly as he stared at the floor, following Kenji, not wanting to
meet his eyes. Now he had Hayashi’s apprentice to deal with.
“So
you’re saying this disease… has already claimed one person?” Kenji looked at
Hayashi, eyes wide with disbelief and fear. Obviously, even if he was trained
as a ninja and a doctor, death was still something he didn’t believe in.
Hayashi looked worn and tired, as if he was burdened with the guilt of death.
“That’s
not all, I’m afraid. It seems as if all the adults have been falling ill
lately, more than I care to count.” Hayashi stated, rubbing his temples with a
weary sigh, and Pochi temporarily forgot his own dilemma.
“Hayashi.” Pochi said comfortably, placing a reassuring hand on his shoulder. “It
wasn’t your fault, you did everything you could, I’m
sure.” Pochi said, and Hayashi just gave a slight nod, standing up, then
looking straight at Pochi, his eyes dark with emotion.
“That’s
not it. This disease, hasn’t affected any of the children, which I find rather
suspicious. It seems to be some sort of black sorcery, though I’m not so sure.
Maybe Yume should come in and try her healing abilities.” Hayashi stated, in
what was almost a speech for him, but then again, this was for the sake of his
patients, so Pochi could understand. Hayashi would never had
made a very efficient ninja, if he wanted to help so many people, though Pochi
supposed he could have said the same for everyone but himself and Kaoru. That’s
probably why they got along so well, other than the fact that Kaoru was furious
at him.
“Yea,
Yume might be able to heal them.” Kenji said eagerly, grinning ear to ear.
Kenji was most certainly going to be a doctor. Thank god it was a time of
peace, and not fighting, like in the Kabusu War. Hayashi gave a slight nod to
Pochi, who sighed.
“Hayashi!” Pochi protested, but the pale man was gone, going to tend the newest
patient. Kenji just gave Pochi a peace sign and a grin, and was off. Pochi
sighed, not sure if he could really face Kaoru again or not.
“Kaoru
dear, you really should come with me to visit Sakura.” Yume stated, hands on
her hips as she tried, quite unsuccessfully, to convince Kaoru to come with her
to at least visit Sakura. “We haven’t seen her in a while, and besides, we’re
not even sure that Pochi will be there.” Yume stated, not one to beat around the
bush, and might as well tell it to her thickheaded husband. Honestly, she loved
Kaoru more than the world, but still, when he wanted to be stubborn…
“No
thanks, I think I’ll visit some other time.” Kaoru said, not bothering to look
at the frustrated expression on his wife’s face.
“Fine
then, but Kaoru dear,” Yume said, pausing in front of the doorway, sure that
Kaoru’s full attention was on her. “He won’t be around forever y’know, and I
would hate to have Pochi leave on a bad note.” Yume turned to face her husband,
door opened as she stepped out. “He did have the guts to come here in the first
place, shouldn’t you do the same?” Yume stated, and that was the last he heard
of her before the door was shut. Kaoru frowned, a sour look on his face. Why
did she always have to make him think so hard, and feel guilty about things
like this? Kaoru gave a light sigh, which turned into a concealed cough. He
rested a palm to his forehead, feeling a slightly warm. One of the reasons he
hadn’t wanted to go, other than the fact Pochi was there, because he had been
feeling a little under the weather, but of course hadn’t told Yume. He didn’t
want her to worry about him anymore than she should. Besides, it was only a
little cold, not enough to get to him, but still…
“Maybe
I should pay a visit to Hayashi.” Kaoru admitted, feeling the headache getting
steadily worse, and his stomach felt a little queasy. With a slight groan, he
lifted himself off of his chair, and headed outside, feeling more than a little
sick.
Hehe! I can’t believe he
likes Sakura! Think of all the possibilities! Kenji thought, grinning happily to himself. Stuck up Prince Zai might even have to
leave! Tell Sakura, yes, tell sister, nice! Wait, I sound a little too
demented. Kenji told himself, giving a slight sigh. Well, now that Pochi
was here, he didn’t have to worry about Prince Zai marrying his beloved sister,
the only person he felt truly understood him… sometimes. Kenji hadn’t been
lying when he had told Pochi Zai didn’t love his sister. He had seen the way
the young red eyed ninja had looked at his sister, and the way Zai had, and it
wasn’t too hard to see the difference. He didn’t tell Pochi, however, that he
had overheard Zai and Kaze talk about Sakura, and the things they had said
about her made his blood boil. No doubt if he had told Pochi, the ninja would
have gone straight to the stuck up prince and beat him good. Though, as much as
he would love to see that, Kenji knew Sakura would disapprove, and Yume and
Kaoru had too much to worry about already, and Hayashi… Kenji took a glance in
the doctor’s direction, who’s face was drawn in
concentration as he tried his small knowledge with white sorcery. Hayashi would
listen, he was certain, but wouldn’t do much but wait and see until it was too
late. Hayashi wasn’t one for brash action, but planning, and that wasn’t really
Kenji’s style. A knock at the dojo/hospital jolted Kenji out of his musings.
“Yes?”
Kenji stated, opening the door. Kaoru’s panting form greeted him, and instantly
Kenji’s eyes widened. “Hayashi!” Kenji cried, helping
Kaoru onto one of the beds that was set up in the makeshift hospital. Pochi,
having heard the commotion, peeked his head out of the
door, and his red eyes widened as he took in the scene.
“Kaoru.” Pochi said, in concern for his mentor, also his friend. He forgot
about the bad blood that had been mixing between them, and knelt beside his old
friend.
“Kenji,
get Yume in here. She’s with Sakura in the garden I think. Pochi,
get a cold towel and some of those bottles over here now!” Hayashi
ordered, rattling off all the orders without a blink of an eye. He had truly
found his calling. Kenji was already up and running at the sound of his name,
and Pochi too, took off, hoping Kaoru would make it.
“Hey!
Yume! Sakura!” Kenji yelled, stopping his sister in
mid sentence, and she turned to Kenji, fully annoyed. “It’s Kaoru! He’s sick!”
Kenji hollered, as if in explanation, and Yume’s face paled. She knew about the
disease that had been going around, and knew how deadly it had become. One person
had already died from it yesterday, and now Kaoru… Kaoru… Yume was off and
running before Kenji could even lift a finger, and she was off and running, for
surprising agility and speed for someone not supposed to be a ninja. Sakura,
not one to be outdone, raced off after her friend, shouting for her to wait up, glad she had thrown off her princess gear to greet her
friend. Long flowy robes may be the trend for
princesses nowadays, but they were absolutely no use in running. By the time
that Sakura had flung open the hospital door, Yume was
already by her husband’s side, using the most powerful white magic that she
had. Even if Yume wasn’t a full-blown ninja, her white magic put anyone’s to
shame, and even rivaled Hayashi’s concoctions. Even if he had downed the
potions and was being tended to by Yume, Kenji noted Kaoru looked as pale as he
did when he left, if possible even more so. The room was thick with worry, and
Sakura made her way softly over to Pochi, who was standing silently in a corner
as Kenji rushed around, watching with a grim expression as he eyed Kaoru’s
form. He felt so guilty, seeing Yume’s worried to death expression. He knew how
much Yume cared for her spouse, almost as much as he did Sakura. He would be
deathly frightened for her if she fell ill with a disease that had already
claimed one life. And not only that, but he had never been able to fully
apologize to Kaoru, his mentor, his older brother, his father figure. He would
forever be guilty if he did not do all he could to help Kaoru get well.
“You
think he’s going to be okay?” Sakura asked worriedly, her eyes straying on both
of them, Yume now resting Kaoru’s head on her lap, brushing away his damp locks
as he breathed with a rasp.
“I
knew he wasn’t feeling well, but I never thought this. If only I had paid
attention and done what something about it…” Yume said, trailing off
mournfully, like Kaoru was already gone and buried, and Pochi didn’t really
want to think of it like that. Kaoru’s death would hurt everyone, especially
sensitive, soft-spoken Yume. Pochi straightened, looking straight at Sakura,
his eyes blazing.
“He’ll
be fine. Kaoru’s too strong to die like this.” Pochi said, loud enough for
everyone to hear. He wouldn’t let this disease take anymore lives. He couldn’t
bear to see Yume so worried, Kaoru so weak, and Sakura so… he looked down at
her, as she wrapped a comforting arm around Yume’s shoulders, whispering
comforting words. He would give Sakura more hope, he’d be sure of it.
Chapter 7: Blood Red Eyes
“You mean, a declaration of war against Byakuro?” Kenji laughed, shaking his head, not sure if he’d believe it. Byakuro was the strongest kingdom of the three countries, and it was suicide to even try to have a battle against them. Their army combined with the mountains and cliffs that surrounded the place made it almost impossible to attack without being detected.
“It’s
an inside attack.” Hayashi stated, his gaze still
locked with Sakura, who was paler than before, her eyes suddenly filled with
worry.
“War,
again? And who exactly would want to do that against us? We’ve signed treaties
with everyone.” Sakura said softly, shaking her head softly as she racked her
mind for anything suspicious.
“Princess,
if I may.” A sleazy voice drawled from the shadows, sending an irritated shiver
down Sakura’s spine.
“What
is it Kaze? I thought I told you not to enter this room.” Sakura said through
clenched teeth, fists gripping the fabric of her dress. Advisor Kaze was one of
those men that instantly came to mind when you thought corruption or greed,
maybe even ugly. He was a thin, sickly pale man that abused his power to his
liking, and so was feared and despised all around the castle.
“I’m
sorry your Majesty,” the title held a bit of mocking
and bitterness, “but I may have a clue to how to cure all this.” Sakura tensed
again, eyes flashing as she glanced at Pochi, who too, was looking agitated,
though hid it like a true ninja. She sighed, and turned back to Kaze, her eyes
flashing with warning and little tolerance. Kaze just gave a little smirk of
satisfaction, then turned back to the group, while
Kenji visibly steamed, hand already on the sword strapped on his back. Kaze
just seemed to smile at all the tension he was causing, as if feeding off of
it, then he turned back to Sakura, empty coal black eyes dark and forbidding.
“Princess, as you’re aware, it is black sorcerery.
Would the Kabusu ring any bells?” He mocked, and Sakura’s eyes flamed even
more, only a hand on her shoulder from Pochi kept her back.
“They
know not to challenge us. Besides, we have helped them in rebuilding their
kingdom to its former glory.” Sakura stated through clenched teeth, and Kaze
gave a slight shrug, the tall cape pooling at his feet.
“But
their pride is wounded. Surely you know that some travelers from there have
entered this kingdom. Maybe they have come here seeking revenge.” Kaze said, an
almost thoughtful expression on his face, as he stroked his chin, a calculating
gleam in his eyes. Pochi’s eyes narrowed, and since no one here would object of
harsh words to the unlikable man, he spoke up angrily.
“You’re
awfully eager to pin the blame, Kaze.” Pochi snapped, and Kaze turned his
attention back to Pochi, eyes gleaming with something that resembled hate. The
feeling was mutual, and the electricity between the two men was felt by all.
“Pochi,”
Sakura said softly, giving his hand a soft pat, making the ninja blush and
immediately jerk his hand away, looking away at the other direction, which
happened to be the grinning Kenji. Kenji gave him a slight wink, then turned back to Kaze, eyes narrowing. “It does seem
suspicious Kaze, but I’ll look into it.” Sakura said, and Kaze gave a brisk
bow, then turned and departed, long cape swishing as
he walked off.
“I
don’t trust that guy one bit.” Kenji hissed, and Hayashi shrugged, getting up
and motioning for Kenji to do the same.
“Now
that we know it is black sorcerery, we might as well
get another white sorcerer user in here, stronger than even Yume.
Unfortunately, the only person in this kingdom capable of such a feat was the
one who passed away.” Hayashi said gravely, and Sakura looked down, suddenly
looking very burdened.
“We
could go to our allies for help, but I doubt they’ll lend a hand. Kabusu has a
short fuse and the third kingdom is the least developed.” Sakura said softly,
her eyes dark as she thought of something, anything that might save her people.
And Pochi couldn’t stand that look. She was always bright and cheerful, no
matter what the circumstances. And so, he stood up, drawing the attention of
everyone in the room to him, and he faltered a bit, not used to all the
attention.
“In
the village I visited, Onita was a powerful white sorcery wielder. Maybe she
could help us.” Pochi stated with conviction, and Sakura looked up at him, eyes
shining with hope.
“Really?” She asked, eyes almost watering at the thought, and Pochi turned away,
blushing madly and sheepishly rubbing the back of his head.
“Of course. Onita is a kind gentle woman, she’d help anyone.” Pochi said, and
Sakura sighed softly, looking up at the ceiling.
“I
guess, I’ll just have to trust you Pochi.” Sakura
said, sending Pochi in even more turmoil in the way she said his name, with
affection and hope. He wouldn’t let her down.
“Do
you think they suspect?” Prince Zai asked, walking along side Advisor Kaze, not
afraid to voice his concern. Kaze had the air of someone to stay away from, and
that’s usually what people did. So, they had nothing to worry about.
“Of
course they’d be a little suspicious, especially the little prince, but no one
will listen to him, and he won’t say anything.” The Advisor said arrogantly, as
if he had nothing to fear. As soon as he obtained the Byakuro princess, or got
her out of the way, he would be able to combine the three kingdoms like it was
supposed to be, and the people would be ruled under
one. Him, of course. But, of course, the princess had
her followers, and no one was more a thorn in his side than that ninja, Pochi.
He was a legend in himself, his blood red eyes piercing and many have been
plagued by them, sending them into a swirling depth of horrifying nightmares.
Those who were his enemy were said to never been seen again. The rest of her
little squad no doubt were a bit rusty, nothing he
couldn’t handle, and if he did get past them, Princess Sakura would be the only
one left. However, that was a challenge in itself. He had seen her awesome
power in the Kabusu war, it had struck fear into the
hearts of many, and had left her weak and frail, resting for months on end
without any sign of recover. So her power did have a weak point. If he started
another war, and forced the princess to use her powers, he would be able to
take Byakuro, and the other weak little kingdoms. But, if he ever failed in
creating a war, Prince Zai was always there, to marry the fiery princess and
subdue her, wrapping her around her ‘fiancé’s’ finger. Hah, fools, every last
one of them.
“Won’t
say anything? How do you know?” Prince Zai asked, a little worriedly. Of
course, the Prince had a lot at stake too. Kaze had promised him the Kabusu
area for his small nation, not yet even considered a kingdom. If he did that,
Prince Zai would win the hearts of the people no doubt.
“Because, everyone is too busy with the disease to worry about us
looking suspicious, my dear Zai. So, play the role of a good little prince and we’ll
be on our way. We will rewrite history my boy, as the men who were able to
defeat the Byakuro princess!” Laughter was heard echoing down the dim halls,
joined only by another, less enthusiastic one.
Pochi
ran, he lungs burning, screaming for air, and his soft
pants barely supplied his growing need for oxygen. But, he had run father and
faster than he usually did, so he supposed it was only normal. He was pushing
himself too hard, and his legs couldn’t keep up. The forest had become
something like a dream, that he was watching as he ran
along, though he was so tired, barely hanging on to consciousness. That’s when
it hit him. The smell of a fire. His eyes blood red
eyes widened in horror as he instantly spurred forward, no longer feeling his
physical weariness. Onita! Teysusha! Everyone! His
mind screamed in fear as he ran forward, and the trees parted to give Pochi a
sight that would forever be burned in his memory. Literally.
The flames of the fire spewed through out the village, and since it had already
consumed everything, it sat, mocking with its heat and horror as it danced.
“Onita! Teysusha!” Pochi cried, rushing forward, pushing his weary body
forward as his eyes took in the sight, horrified. The blaze had consumed mostly
everything, nothing was left, the villagers, the
villagers… they had been scorched and heaped in a mass, their mournful gazes
piercing into his heart. Pochi, they moaned, why weren’t you here? Teysusha’s bright green eyes were glazed over with the most
accusing, and Pochi couldn’t stand their stares. They were right,
he shouldn’t have left for his own selfish reasons. “Onita.”
He whispered fearfully, since even if he could not protect these villagers who
had become family to him, he might as well be able to protect the others.
“Pochi…
is that you?’ A weak voice rasped, and Pochi looked back, seeing the badly
burnt form of Onita sprawled on the floor, somewhat untouched by all the
flames.
“Onita!” He exclaimed, tears bursting from his face as he rushed to the woman
who had been like a mother to him, cradling her head gently as she smiled up at
him, coughing a bit.
“I’m
glad you made it here safely.” She gasped, coughing a bit into her hand as
Pochi looked down at her.
“Onita! Who?” He asked, and she gave a slight smile
again, closing her eyes tiredly.
“You’ll
see soon, dear, don’t feel horrible. Just protect her, and you’ll need that.
Please, take care of them.” Onita gasped feebly one last time, before death
overtook her, leaving Pochi to feel the weight of their stares and guilt on his
shoulders. He looked blankly over at the package Onita clutched lightly in her
hand, and taking it gently from her, he set her down, crossing her arms over
her chest as she rested peacefully. He turned back to the burning village, the
flames arching higher and higher as a fire burned brighter and fiercer in
Pochi’s blood red eyes.
“Pochi…”
Sakura whispered softly, her brown eyes worried and troubled as she glanced out
over the railing of the balcony, trying to catch any sign of him. He had said
that he would be back by morning, but still, it didn’t stop her from being
worried. The feeling something horrible was going to happen was making her
worry more than she usually did, especially since her bad feelings always came
true. She sighed again, leaning forward over the railing of the balcony, the
same one where they had tearfully parted.
“You
shouldn’t worry.” Prince Zai said somewhat soothingly, as Sakura turned her doe
brown eyes back to him, arching an eyebrow.
“He’s
my friend, of course I worry.” She stated, while Zai gave a careless shrug,
turning back over the lush farmlands, the quaint little wood houses, and the
beautiful scenery. He then turned back to Sakura, with a ghost of a smile on
his lips.
“You
should not place your personal concerns before your people. You soothe their
troubles, not vice versa.” Zai said calmly, while Sakura looked up at him, her
fist clenching at her side, but she said nothing. If not for her father’s will,
she wouldn’t even be in the same room as this arrogant Prince Zai. Not now,
since Pochi had returned. She felt better now, like she was relieved, like she
didn’t have to pretend to love Zai just to encourage her people. Now she no
longer had to bottle all her thoughts and frustrations that no one else seemed
to understand but Pochi.
“Even
so, princesses can’t be expected to only care for their people. If so, we would
be an endangered breed, don’t you agree?” Sakura replied back, a bit of fire in
her words, and Zai just blinked blankly and nodded his head as if he understood
or agreed, either one Sakura doubted was true.
“I
suppose you are right, Princess.” Zai stated blandly, and Sakura sighed,
rolling her eyes in irritation, turning back to Zai.
“What
is it you really came up here to discuss with me? You’re not one for
pleasantries.” Sakura stated, and Zai looked at her in surprise, as if not
suspecting her to speak with him in such a tone.
“I
just wanted to soak in your beauty, and I also was impatient to claim you as my
beautiful bride.” Zai said with a suave, charming tone that didn’t sway Sakura
in the least. She hated being sweet talked to like she was some child that
could be swayed that easily.
“Don’t
lie to me like that. I seriously doubt your loyalty to Byakuro.” Sakura stated,
her brown eyes glaring with distrust at Zai, who smiled disarmingly.
“Why
Princess, I want nothing but the prosperity of Byakuro, and of course you.”
Sweeping her slender hand to his lips, he smiled, and turned, bowing out the
door, Sakura’s eyes following him with distrust. Sakura turned her attention
away from the door Zai had exited, turning her worried gaze back to the main
road, and her eyes widened with delight as she spied Pochi’s figure heading
toward the castle.
“Pochi!” She called happily, waving as she practically flung herself over the
railing, trying to get a better look at Pochi. His blood red eyes turned to
her, determined and hard, and Sakura blinked, drawing back for a moment. What
had happened to you that was so horrible to change you so much? Sakura wondered, eyes still locked with Pochi’s.
Chapter 8: The Moment
“They
suspect something.” Zai hissed, while Kaze stroked his chin thoughtfully,
seated in a dreary plush chair, as if mocking a throne of some sort.
“Do
not worry. The resistance is ready, all they are waiting for my signal.” Kaze
stated, standing up, his cape fluttering to the floor with a slight ruffle. Zai
said nothing, just glanced up at him.
“But
they found the white scroll. The disease at this rate will be cured at
sundown.” Zai said, and Kaze shrugged his shoulders, putting his hands behind
his back. The window before him opened, showing the land that belonged to
Princess Sakura, to the Byakuro line. Soon, he’d have it all though, maybe with
the princess at his side. He had seen her awesome power during the
Byakuro-Kabusu war, and he had realized the legends were true, and he wasn’t
going to stay under her leadership any longer. He wanted power, and she had it,
so all he had to do was get her under his control. He had been plotting for
months on accomplishing this feat. After she had used her power, she had been
unbearably weak, and had been bed-ridden for months on end, looking as if she
would never get better. Then, at the end of the second month, she had just
gotten up, smiling and laughing as if nothing happened. So, he had to make her
use her legendary powers before abducting her. That’s why he had to gather
together men and women from all over the country, at least two thousand, who
were dissatisfied with Byakuro, and wanted revenge. It hadn’t been that hard to
do really, and while he was away, he had made sure that the sickness had
plagued Byakuro, weakening the army, and taking Prince Kenji’s eyes off of him
while he went and traveled.
“The
disease has served its uses.” Kaze stated with a flick of his wrist, his cape
flinging over his shoulder and he walked off, Zai still on his heels.
“But
someone will surely notice if you leave again.” Zai fired back, his face drawn
and pale, his blue eyes wide and worried. ‘Prince’ Zai had a lot to lose too,
in doing this. He wasn’t really a Prince, just an actor Kaze had found.
Together, they had made up a fake will of the King, telling about the
engagement of young ‘Prince’ Zai and Princess Sakura. Kaze stopped in mid
stride, turning back to Zai, his cold eyes narrowed in anger.
“If
you don’t believe in me, say so now. I have no problem in killing you right
now.” The Advisor snapped, his hands raising, dark
energy swirling around him. Zai backed off, nodding his head, his eyes wide
with fear.
“I’m
sorry my Lord. I have faith in you, forgive me.” Zai said, giving a slight bow,
and Kaze smirked. With another flick of his wrist, Kaze was gone, leaving a
fuming Zai in place, and Kenji in the shadows, his
black eyes clouded with anger.
“Thank you doctor!” A man said enthusiastically, the last one to leave
the clinic, a happy look on his face as his children latched onto his legs, his
wife smiling and bowing to Hayashi, who smiled and nodded his head. Hayashi
sighed with a content look on his face, sitting down, deciding to give himself
a break. Yume had already started rolling up the hospital beds, Kaoru with her,
looking as vibrant as usual, the life back in his eyes. Pochi had just dropped
off the scroll, a look that stated clearly that he wanted to be alone, so they
had let him go, tending to patients. Hayashi looked back up, a sigh now
crossing his lips. Now that there was no one to tend to, his mind could drift,
and usually to only one painful subject. Matsuri. He
understood why she left, because she had felt caged. She needed adventure,
action in her life, and Hayashi knew he hadn’t been able to say anything to
make her stay. He had been the one who had seen her, travel bag slung over her
shoulder, leaving in the midst of the night. She had taken after Pochi, feeling
that she needed to get out of the castle walls before she left. Hayashi could
understand that, but it didn’t make it any easier for him to accept the fact
that she had left. He sighed again, and now had caught the attention of Yume,
who had a sad, knowing look on her face. Kind hearted Yume. She was just what
Kaoru had needed, and she read people so well. Too bad she hadn’t wanted to
hurt people, or she would have made an excellent ninja. Finishing putting up
the last bed roll, she turned to Hayashi, putting a comforting hand on his
shoulder, then turning and walking out with Kaoru, who gave Hayashi a thankful
glance before leaving.
“Hayashi.” He turned to see the serious face of Kenji who looked like he had
something to say, but was waiting for Hayashi to reply back. With a slight
tired nod, he sat down again, suddenly feeling the weight of using the scroll
so much. After fifty concecutive uses, it had only
gotten heavier and heavier, harder to use.
“Yes
Kenji?” Hayashi said tiredly, and Kenji instantly narrowed his dark eyes.
“Zai
and Kaze, they’re plotting something. They’re planning to capture Sakura to
rule the world and they have a small army gathered! They were the ones
responsible for the disease that almost killed everyone!” Kenji blurted, and
Hayashi looked up, eyes narrowed.
“Why
didn’t you say so before? We have to warn Sakura.” Hayashi said, in his haste
knocking his chair over, but Kenji smiled slightly, shaking his head.
“She
already knows.”
“Spill
it Zai! How many people were you planning to kill just to get to me?” Sakura
spat, pining Zai against the wall, her brown eyes blazing with an
uncontrollable fury. Zai said nothing, trying to keep his cool, eyes looking
down at her.
“Princess,
please calm yourself.” Zai said, wishing Kaze was in
this position instead of him, but knowing Kaze, he was still gathering up his
little army. How long was he going to take?
“No!
You were here, plotting behind my back, killing my people, being a slimy slithering
snake, why I oughta!” Sakura snarled, her fists now at her sides, shaking as
she tried, unsuccessfully to calm herself like Manners Mistress had been trying
to teach her.
“Princess,
I’m afraid that information is incorrect.” Zai said, and instantly the dam that
was holding all her fury broke. Her fist shot out, catching Zai on the cheek,
sending him sprawling on the floor. Instantly she was on top of him, her fist raised again, and already his cheek was bruising a nice
shade of purple.
“Don’t
call Kenji a liar when you are the one who deserves death.” Sakura hissed
angrily, raising her fist, Zai flinching, closing his eyes in anticipation.
“Sakura!” Pochi’s voice called, grabbing her fist before it struck its blow.
Startled, she turned back to Pochi, who was looking at her, his red eyes
piercing. She blinked, letting her fist fall, thoroughly embarrassed, getting
off of Zai, who opened his eyes.
“Thank you honorable ninja Pochi. If it wasn’t for you I would-“ Zai was cut off when Pochi let his fist strike his other
cheek, glaring at Zai with an angered expression.
“I
wasn’t doing this for you. Go back to Kaze and tell him we’re ready for
whatever he dishes out, but if I ever see you again…” Pochi cracked his
knuckles loudly, and Zai paled, both cheeks bruised again. “Now get out of my
sight.” Pochi spat, giving Zai a good kick in the ribs, sending the ‘Prince’
whimpering, his tail between his legs. Sakura blinked,
looking back at Pochi, her brown eyes wide as he watched Zai go, a look of
disgust on his face.
“Pochi…”
She said again, and Pochi looked up at the way she said his name, full of
affection and gratefulness. Instantly his cheeks were on fire, and looked back
down at the floor. “Thank you!” Her arms were suddenly around his neck, her
face buried in the crook of his neck. Startled, Pochi could only wrap his arms
around her as she sniffled. “Sorry… I’m getting all emotional, but you saved my
people…” Sakura half sobbed, trying to regain her composure, her face
dangerously close to his. His face had turned into a nice shade of tomato red,
and Sakura let lose a giggle, looking deep into his eyes, not even flinching
like most people did when confronted with his piercing red eyes. Maybe that’s
when he started to love her, when he treated him exactly like everyone else,
even though his eyes were the most peculiar color. “Why do you always blush
when you’re around me Pochi? Do I make you that uncomfortable?” Sakura
breathed, eyes locking with his, drowning Pochi in their depths. He was
immediately speechless, not able to think of anything but the woman before him.
“Not
uncomfortable. Never.” Pochi whispered,
both their faces less than inches from each other, and Sakura nodded her head,
face all serious as she continued to lock gazes with him. Suddenly, her eyes
closed again, and she leaned forward, and instantly Pochi’s face flamed again,
internally panicking, a raging storm of emotions he didn’t have under control.
“Princess!” Sakura and Pochi instantly looked up, seeing a breathless messenger,
who had no clue he had broken one of their most intimate moments. Sakura
unwound herself from Pochi, looking deeply into his eyes one last time, before
turning the messenger.
“Yes?”
She asked, knowing already that this wouldn’t be good news in the least.
“Kaze
and one thousand followers have declared war on us milady.” The messenger
blurted, and instantly Sakura’s eyes widened, then they narrowed, and putting
her hands on her curvy hips.
“Tell
everyone to get ready for war! Tell the villagers to get ready for evacuation, and
have all the soldiers train themselves. I want everyone to have a good night’s
sleep, for we move out at the crack of dawn.” Sakura ordered, immediately
taking everything into consideration.
“And what about the ninjas milady?” The messenger asked, and
Sakura grinned, turning to Pochi with a wink.
“We’ll
get ready for war. Tell Hayashi I want him out here too. And
Kenji?” Pochi blinked, noticing that Kenji had silently slipped into the
room without his noticing. That boy would have made a very fine ninja indeed.
“Get your little rag tag group together and tell them it’s the real thing this
time.” Sakura said, and Kenji nodded, disappearing seemingly into the darkness.
Sakura turned back to Pochi, a fire in her eyes that had made him fall for her
in the first place. “We’ll show Kaze how it feels to taste a bit of Byakuro’s
fury.”
Chapter 9: All Mighty
“Good!
That’ll be all for now. I want you each to spar for fifteen minutes, then go
home and rest.” Kaoru ordered, and the trainees, seasoned and not, nodded their
heads and continued with their drills. Kaoru sighed, turning back to Yume, who
had seated herself next to him, her breathing quickened.
“All
the villagers are safely tucked away in the mountains.” Yume reported, and
Kaoru nodded, giving his wife an affectionate smile before turning to Hayashi,
who was correcting Kenji’s stance.
“Hayashi!” Hayashi looked up, tilting his head to the side in amusement as Kaoru
walked over. “Let us see how your skills have settled these long years.” Kaoru
said, unsheathing his long sword, while Hayashi, the
amused expression still on his lips, complied, hands in his cloak, a bomb
lighted and thrown almost before Kaoru could react. Jumping to the side to
avoid the projectile, Kaoru turned and swung for Hayashi’s knees, missing when
the ninja jumped up, flipping behind Kaoru. Smashing a mixture to the ground,
releasing a thick purple smoke that sent Kaoru coughing, Hayashi was up again,
Kaoru swinging his sword to get the smoke cleared. Gasps of awe were heard as
the trainees stopped, watching in amazement as the two ninjas seemingly danced,
their moves of grace and skill, eyes hard with determination. They knew that
the two before them were warriors, no matter what happened, for it shone in
their eyes. Yume’s eyes followed Kaoru, still a bit worried about his safety.
She knew Kaoru could take care of himself, and Hayashi would never hurt Kaoru,
but still, her job was to worry, and so worry she did… Bringing the blunt side
of his sword to the side, Kaoru caught Hayashi in the ribs, sending the pale man
to his knees as he gasped, holding his side. Getting up, he flung a bit of dark
magic Kaoru’s way, Kaoru jumping up to avoid it, but met a bomb from Hayashi,
sending dirt in his face, and he flung an arm over his eyes. Suddenly his eyes
jerked up, and he quickly lifted his sword, pointing it an inch from Hayashi’s
throat, while Hayashi did the same with his small dagger. Both had a hard look
of something near anger, and the trainees waited patiently, holding their
breath, eyes wide with anticipation. Suddenly, both men broke into a slight
grin, lowering their weapons.
“I
am still as sharp as ever, thank you.” Hayashi said with a slight grin, while
Kaoru chuckled.
“It
seems so.” Kaoru replied, sheathing his sword, patting his friend on the back
while he passed, going back over to Yume and pressing his lips to her cheek as
she smiled up at him brightly. It seemed both men just needed to blow off some
steam and tension, Yume decided, that was nothing more
than child’s play. Yume sighed, closing her big brown eyes, then
turning back to the sun, the breeze toying with her long brown hair still in a
bun. She hoped, somewhat foolishly, that war would not have to come.
“Do
you really think this is enough? Do you think war is really the answer?” Pochi
asked Sakura, and she sighed, looking up at the sky, a troubled look on her
face, even if the stars twinkled merrily.
“I’m
not so sure, y’know? I’m worried. What if this decision causes my people to
suffer?” Sakura confessed a bit worriedly, and Pochi sighed timidly wrapping
his arm around her shoulder, and she gave him a slight smile as she looked up
at him. “Pochi…” he perked up at the way she said his name, wistful, and maybe…
some longing? She had his full attention now. “Please, protect everyone, but
yourself too, y’know? Don’t let your emotions cloud your judgment. Isn’t that
what Kaoru used to say to both of us?” Sakura asked with a slight smile, and
Pochi blinked, suddenly conscious on how close they were. Did… she know? He
looked down at her a bit confused, but she didn’t say anything for a moment.
“I…
will. You don’t have to worry.” Pochi said comfortingly, and Sakura looked up
at him with a small grin.
“I
have to worry Pochi. You’re my friend.” Sakura said, and Pochi felt joy and
heaviness surge through him. He was glad that she cared enough to worry about
him, but he was a bit disappointed in how she had only said ‘friend’. He should
have known really. He didn’t stand a chance against all the other men who lined
up to purpose to someone like Sakura. All he could do is be her best friend,
nothing more, and his heart sank to think so, nothing less. Seeing his somewhat
down expression, Sakura gave him a bright smile, elbowing him a bit. “What’s
wrong Pochi? I’m sure you’ll pull through. You’re strong, a lot stronger than
me.” Sakura said, and Pochi blinked, looking down at her, his expression
displaying his shock, and Sakura laughed a bit, looking back across the lake
with a somewhat dreamy look on her face. “When I first met you, you were so
quiet, so withdrawn. Then I got to know you, and Pochi? You’re a lot greater
than you believe so. I just wish you could understand. It takes a lot of guts
to confront Kaze and Kaoru, and it takes even more guts to stop a Princess from
doing something disgraceful.” Sakura said softly, and Pochi blushed, looking
down and mumbling something humble, and Sakura laughed again, her laughter
singing in his ear. She gave him a light poke, her eyes dancing. “See? You take
a compliment from a Princess and completely humble yourself. You should feel
honored.” Sakura said, her hands on her hips in a slight mock scowl, but she
broke out in a grin after a minute, earning a small smile from Pochi. He
sighed, looking at her as if he was horrified.
“I’m
sorry your majesty. I will now state to everyone proudly that I am the best
warrior to walk the face of the earth.” Pochi said, in a slight breathy, jumpy
voice that earned a small giggle out of Sakura, and a
chuckle from himself. When the laughter faded, Sakura sighed, leaning her head
against Pochi’s shoulder, startling him, and he moved to leave, but Sakura
planted a hand firmly on his shoulder.
“Can
we stay like this, just for tonight? Please?” Sakura asked, in a slightly
dreamy, wistful voice, and Pochi wasn’t one to turn her down. He nodded, settling
his head on top of hers, both of them looking up at the stars, who smiled back
down at them.
Kaze
smiled gleefully down at the mass of soldiers, dutifully assembled before him,
looking up at him as if he were some deity or god. Tonight, he was closer to
his plan, especially since in the morning these soldiers would be with him,
martyrs. Their deaths wouldn’t be useless, no, they would be the key to the
world, and he was so close, he could taste it. It didn’t matter that Zai had
been found out, it didn’t matter at all. He was so close… so close…
“Friends,
warriors, we have been gathered today under the glorious sun who is smiling
down upon to take back what is rightfully ours. The world!”
Cheers were heard, the rows of black garbed people
lifting their weapons in the air, chanting his name as if they worshiped him,
and worship him they should. He was their leader, someone who would soon have
the world and the Byakuro Princess in the palm of his hand. He would be all
mighty! He held up a hand, and instantly the crowd quieted, simmering with
excitement, all completely faithful to the corrupt man before them. “We are
invincible, and even the Byakuro Princess cannot stand in our way! Soon, she
too, will fall to us!” An uproar seized the crowd, and
Kaze smiled again, a small, ruthless smile that brought an evil sparkle to his
eyes, and still clutching at the podium in front of him, he raised his voice
for the final time that night. “We move out at dawn, and the world will tremble
in fear.” Kaze smiled as he turned and left the stage, still hearing the roar
of the excited martyrs. Fools, every last one of them.
Chapter 10: The Rush
Sakura
sighed, taking a deep breath as she stood in the front lines with her people.
She knew that if they lost her, that the kingdom would be lost, the Byakuro
line lost, everything, but… She needed, no, wanted to be with her people. She
would feel useless sitting up in the castle when she knew her friends and
people were going to war. She’d never be able to live with herself. Besides,
she was just as good with swords as anyone, and she had the Scroll… she lightly
fingered it, as it was tucked in her shirt, and she sighed again, standing by
the bridge, knowing that everyone else behind her was just as frightened as
her, though she shouldn’t show it. She couldn’t show it, for her people… she needed
to be strong for them. She gave another glance at Pochi, who was next to her,
and he gave her a small smile. Last night was as close as she could get to tell
her how she felt. With all her courage she showed in battle, she couldn’t even
tell Pochi how she felt. She closed her eyes again, and she felt Pochi’s hand
rest comfortingly on her shoulder, and she looked up at him.
“Pochi…”
She started, though he shook his head, pointing to the horizon, where an army
of considerable proportions was gathering above the mountain’s brim, the sun’s
fiery ring behind them as if a bloody prophesy. She made a face, straightening
her back as Kaoru once again took the front lines, yelling out last minute
orders next to her, and Sakura smiled. She wasn’t the Princess of Byakuro any
more, because until this battle was over, she’d be a warrior, who would go down
fighting.
Kenji
yelled, slashing at his opponent, blocking the kick and countering with a kick
to the opponent’s face, as he fell. He blinked, looking back, the chaos of the
battle everywhere. It wasn’t hard to distinguish friend from foe, since foe
wore bright red, while Byakuro had on black, silent shadows of justice.
Snapping out of his reverie, he lifted his sword up to block the downward slash
aimed for his head by a red shirted man. Unclenching their swords, Kenji gave a
fast spin around, his sword swinging and connecting with the man’s back,
sending him sprawling, blood spurting from the wound. It was a dance, a deadly
one, a slight misstep or bad timing could get you killed, and Kenji loved it. The adrenaline rush, the clash of swords, the heat of battle, all
exciting to him. He may be trained to be a doctor, and saving lives was
good and all, though battle, nothing could compare to that. He let lose a swirl
of daggers into the person in front of him, dodging to the side and avoiding
the whoosh of daggers aimed for him, jumping up into the air and twirling some
of Hayashi’s bombs down like rain itself, quick and pattering, explosions heard
as he dropped back down to the ground. He gave a slight yelp, getting nicked by
a sword, and clutching his wound, he dropped down to avoid the side slash aimed
for his midsection, kicking, though the man jumped up, avoiding it, aiming a
kick for Kenji’s head, though he anticipated the move, grabbed the foot and
twisted it, bring the man hard face down on the cold unfeeling ground.
Unleashing another fury of bombs into the crowd, careful not to hit any of the
black ninjas who knew when Kenji or Hayashi was in the air,
that meant run, and run far. He flung another bomb into the crowd,
dropping with a roll to the crowd, slashing at knees that soon stained their
crimson suits with their own liquid, and Kenji jumped again, ready for more.
Nothing could ever replace the adrenaline rush of battle.
Kaze
gritted his teeth, watching as one by one his soldiers by the hands of the
Byakuro. No, no, no! This was all wrong! He smirked, getting himself up from
his seated throne, striding confidently from the platform he was watching
everything to the machine. It had undergone secret repairs, and was better than
ever. Its mechanical structure resembled a bug, a beetle with a large steel
plated shell, two long extending arms on either side
with claws at the ends. Various guns and attachments had also snuggled their
way into the frame, and Kaze smirked. There was no way he’d lose, not before
he’d make the Princess use her powers. Yes, he was so close, so close. There
was no need to toy with his peons anymore. He settled himself into the seat,
buckling himself in as he hummed softly to himself, his black eyes glittering
with malice. No one could stop him now, not in this destruction machine that
had helped the Kabusu take over Byakuro in the first place. With a slight
laugh, he began bringing the mechanical monster to life.
Hayashi
looked up, hearing the horrifying creak and scream of metal gears cranking
against each other, and he looked up toward the horizon. A giant beetle
stumbled into view, crushing trees, destroying farm lands, and people’s screams
were heard. From both sides. The machine began firing
into the crowd, and people once locked in battle instantly forgot their
quarrels, and turned and ran. The people on Kaze’s side had finally realized
they had been betrayed. Screams of pain and horror were heard, and Hayashi
winced, feeling unpleasant memories of the same thing happening years before
assault him. War. It struck a cord of horror deep within him, and he stood,
watching in some kind of trance of terror as the beast advanced.
“Hayashi!” He turned, seeing Kenji running up to him, waving his arms around.
“Everyone is retreating! Most of Kaze’s forces have surrendered, and are being
offered shelter! C’mon! We have to take care of this!” Kenji cried, and Hayashi
turned to his apprentice, his breathing ragged as he noticed Kenji’s many cuts
and bruises, knowing her probably looked worse. His cape was ripped and torn,
his hair singed, and he was caked in blood and dirt, both the enemies and his
own.
“Where’s
Pochi?” He asked, feeling physical exhaustion, though pushed it back in the
corner of his mind, saving it for later. Kenji blinked, black eyes scanning
somewhat desperately for the red eyed ninja. Suddenly he heard a desperate cry,
and his head jolted up.
“There!
Pochi!” He cried, pointing where the red eyed ninja
stood, right in harm’s way, his eyes blazing with anger as he fingered a scroll
in his hand.
“Pochi!” Hayashi exclaimed, just as a huge explosion was heard, dust coming up
in the place where his best friend had just stood.

Chapter 11: Like a Fairy
Tale
“Pochi!” Sakura cried, stopping in her tracks as she stared horrified at where
Pochi had once stood. Oh no, it couldn’t end like this, not like this… The dust
cleared, and she blinked, putting a hand to her heart, which was beating
erratically, and she looked at Pochi, who had his arms crossed over his chest,
with a figure in front of him.
“Matsuri…”
She heard Hayashi whisper, and she blinked, recognizing the figure, her usual
skimpy outfit, her neatly cut black hair that reached her shoulders, her brown
eyes shining with something like superiority. She gave a slight sigh of relief,
glad to see both of her friends okay, seeing Matsuri with a small grin on her
face.
“Don’t
just stand there Pochi, do something.” Matsuri laughed, while Pochi shook his
head slightly, putting the scroll in his mouth, a sudden burst of light
emerging as a giant frog that once had been Pochi emerged, instantly combating
the machine. Matsuri, at the time, had covered her ears, giving a slight
whimper, though didn’t faint or freak out like she normally did.
“It’s
good to see you again Matsuri!” Sakura said happily, while Matsuri gave her a
slight shaky smile, still trying hard not to listen to the battle behind her,
or look at the frog either.
“So
Sakura, seems like your kingdom is crumbling by the time I get back here.”
Matsuri said, with a slight tinge of mocking, but Sakura just smiled, looking
back at Hayashi, who had turned away, and she sighed, knowing he had been heart
broken when Matsuri had left. There must be so many emotions swirling in him
right now… Sakura tilted her head back to the side, firing another order to the
people at her side.
“Get
the wounded to the clinic! Hayashi, Kenji, go with them! Matsuri, I have a
feeling we’ll be needing your strength in a bit. Get a
search squad ready and see if any were injured in the fields.” Sakura said
briskly, each going off to follow their orders, and Sakura looked back up at
the battle almost right in front of her face. Oh Pochi… please be okay.
Kaze
gritted his teeth, pulling another level in frantic desperation. No! He was
close! So close! He couldn’t let a giant frog ruin his plans! Even if he was
the ninja Pochi, it didn’t matter! He’d kill two birds in one stone! He let out
another insane laugh as he continued firing his cannons, while the slow moving
frog could barely dodge them all. Pochi let loose a round of ice that came from
his tongue, glad that he had, at least, some experience this time, with the
machine and this morph. Kaze continued to frantically pull levels, trying
anything to keep the frog from getting closer to him, though all was inn vain.
He was so close! There was no way he’d let one lousy ninja be the downfall of
him! He was going to rule the world! His legacy wasn’t going to stop before it
started! His plans had been going sour ever since the battle had begun. His
poorly trained troops were no match against Byakuro, and they had soon found
out he was intent on killing everyone who got in his way, and had run and fled.
He was truly, all by himself. But wasn’t that ninja also? No… he blinked,
looking down over the frog’s shoulder, seeing the Princess watching, her brown
eyes wide with concern. He gave a slight smirk, his moral rising again at a
frightening speed. The Princess was right there! All he had to do was shoot
this overgrown vermin down, and the world would be his! He let out another
laugh, spraying fire down at the frog, who couldn’t
doge in time, fell, loud crumbling sounds and a pained roar were heard.
“Pochi!” He heard the Princess cry, and he let out another laugh. He could
savor this victory, no, he would! The great ninja Pochi had fallen so easily to
him, one man alone! It was almost ironic, he had
thought the ninja was going to be a challenge! To think, that he had spent all
that time carefully planning and worrying over nothing! He hadn’t even needed
Zai for this! He needed no one now! He saw the ninja brush Sakura away, while
she gave him a worried glance, as he jumped up with a yell, landing on the
extended arm of the craft.
“What?”
Kaze screamed in fury, quickly regaining his senses as he swung the arm about,
though the ninja, graceful and skilled as he was, continued running along the
moving arm with ease, until he was up in Kaze face. Suddenly, Kaze felt fear
surge through him, as he locked eyes with the enraged. He knew he wasn’t going
to make it, the blood red eyes told him that, and he suddenly knew why people
would fear the great ninja Pochi so. It was all in his angered eyes, like that
of a demon bent on destruction, and deep inside his soul, Kaze shivered. That
was before he let loose a malevolent smirk on his face. He would go down
fighting! People would remember his name and fear him! Fear for Pochi? Hah! He
would bring the great ninja with him as a gift to the after life. With a laugh,
he let loose the most horrible black spell he knew, flinging it right into the
warrior’s face just as a dagger pierced his black heart. Kaze died laughing,
while Pochi fell to the ground, being caught by Sakura. His blood red eyes
which struck fear in the heart of many were now blank and empty, as if the
person Sakura was holding was just a shell.
“Pochi.” Sakura whispered, hugging his head to hers, feeling tears trickle from
her eyes into his mat of spiky black hair. Please… save Pochi. Please…
The
flames… they were everywhere, dancing around him, taunting as sweat dribbled
from his brow. The heat… was it… guilt? What was it? The flames taunted him,
dancing around him, surrounding him so he couldn’t get out. What had he done to
deserve this? He gave a slight cry out in pain, the flames tearing at his mind,
his being, his essence.
“Sakura!” He cried, desperate to have anything to think of other than the pain,
the torture. For one blissful moment, he felt the flames recede, and he saw
Sakura again, smiling, but only for a minute, and then she was gone, and the
flames came back, more burning than before. He gave another gasp, falling to
the floor, his hands on his head, trying hard not to
cry out in pain. He felt it now, he knew what it was. Guilt.
He had betrayed everyone, the people in the village, he couldn’t save them. He
looked up, his face pale, dripping with sweat, the flames dancing around him,
their faces laughing as they mocked him. Suddenly they turned into a mournful
state, the villagers peering down on him, their eyes soulless and empty.
“Why
didn’t you save us Pochi? Why didn’t you protect us?” They moaned in a horrible
screeching voice, and Pochi stuttered, feeling bile rise in his throat at the
sight of their lifeless stares.
“I
couldn’t…” He mumbled, looking down sorrowfully, and he felt their accusing
stares.
“You’re
not worthy Pochi! You’re not worthy!” Their lifeless whispers all rose to an
accusing roar, drowning out all reasonable thought, and all Pochi could do was
cry out for Sakura.
“Sakura!” Pochi moaned again, tossing and turning in the white bedroll they had
laid out for the patients. Hayashi, Yumi, and Kenji were all using the White
Scroll, healing patients quickly and with effectiveness, the ones who didn’t
need it were quickly bandaged up and sent to the Mess Hall, where Kaoru, the
rest of Kenji’s little rag tag group and the cook were making food the feed the
starving. Sakura looked down at him, her eyes filled with worry and tears.
“Ssshh,
Pochi, I’m right here.” Sakura said, a heartbroken look in her eyes as she
clutched his hand, putting a soothing cool cloth on his head, cooing reassuring
words to him as he continued to thrash around, moaning her name in pain. She
wished desperately that Yumi or someone would come over, but she knew the other
patients needed tending too. He wailed again, and Sakura blinked back more
tears, flinging her arms around him, cooing into his ear, feeling the tears
prick her eyes anyway. It hurt her to see him like this, so defenseless, in so
much pain, and after all the things he had done for her, she couldn’t do
anything to repay him.
“Sakura.” She blinked, looking up to meet Yumi’s tired gaze. Sakura smiled to
her friend as she used the White Scroll once more before setting off when
hearing Kenji’s cry of distress. Pochi immediately calmed down, a peaceful look
on his face, and Sakura gave a slight sigh of relief. If he died… she shook off
the thought, knowing Pochi was stronger than that, stronger than he liked to
admit, and she needed him. It was silly to think of it that way, but she needed
him. As a friend, if nothing else. She sighed, tucking
another sweat soaked strand of hair away from his face, gently
tracing his cheeks, his nose, his lips… she blinked, jerking her hand away,
blushing furiously. She knew Pochi would be okay now, then why did she linger
here? She sighed, pressing her lips softly against his sweaty forehead, pulling
away, looking down at him, her eyes soft and she smiled slightly.
“Please
get better, love.” Sakura said, blushing slightly as the words left her lips,
and a bit startled, she jolted up, turning and briskly walking off, not
noticing when Pochi’s eyes flew open, a hand to his forehead, a small blush on
his cheeks, and a dreamy smile on his face as he watched her leave. Sakura…
Hayashi
sighed, splashing cold, refreshing water on his face and neck, feeling relief
wash over him like the water itself. Using the White Scroll was draining, and
even if he had stamina when casting spells, it had quickly worn him out, and
especially after the battle like the one they had just had. It could have been
much worse, he knew. They had minimal casualties, thought their deaths still
weighed heavily on his mind, even the enemies. It was strange, this afternoon
he had seen them as enemies, but tonight, as a doctor, they were patients, and
he felt responsible for so many of the dead lying out on the field. Matsuri had
come back, carrying wounded after wounded, giving him an encouraging smile, the
closet thing Hayashi would get as an apology. He had been doing a lot of
thinking these two long years, and he didn’t want Matsuri to leave again,
without her knowing his feelings. It was about high time he made the first
move, and he didn’t want to be hurt again. He knew she would probably just
laugh, and turn and leave anyway, but at least he would have no regrets, and he
could watch her leave, this time without a heavy heart, but a light one,
knowing she knew, and she might be back again someday.
“Hayashi.” He blinked, turning around, coming face to face with Matsuri, who blew
her bangs out of her face in an irritated way, as if the things she was about
to say were things she didn’t want to, but would anyway.
“Matsuri.” He replied evenly, hoping his voice didn’t hold to much longing as he
let her name roll off of his tongue, as he had done for the past two years. It
was like saying her name out loud awakened feelings inside him he kept a secret.
Her lips tugged into a slight smile, as she turned to face the stars.
“You
always kept things inside, but tell me Hayashi… when I left, why didn’t you
stop me?” Matsuri asked, crossing her arms under her breasts, and Hayashi
blinked, looking down at his shoes, as if he was ashamed. He was, in fact, very
ashamed. He should have stopped her, though he was too hurt, too silent, too ignorant.
“You
wanted to go.” It was more of a question than a statement, and Matsuri’s gaze
was turned back to him, her eyes blazing with anger, or was it hurt? Suddenly
Hayashi was so confused.
“If
you wanted me to stay, why didn’t you ask? I would have gladly stayed… for
you.” Matsuri whispered, and Hayashi blinked, looking up at her with a shocked
expression on his face. With a slight sigh, she tucked a strand of hair behind
her ear. “You were never like anyone else Hayashi, and that was what attracted
me to you, I guess. I thought you would have figured out my feelings, but when
you didn’t… I thought you didn’t feel for me like I felt for you. I was hurt,
and stupid, so I left, hoping that you would stop me, like in a fairy tale or
something. And when you didn’t Hayashi… I felt… hurt and rejected.” Matsuri
took a deep breath, and for a moment, Hayashi saw how vulnerable she was, her
tough girl attitude falling, letting him inside the walls she had carefully
constructed around herself. And, instantly, his barriers melted also, seeing
the pain she had been through, what she was still going through.
“Matsuri…”
Hayashi started again, though she shook her head, backing up a step, as if to
escape from the words Hayashi was about to say.
“No,”
she choked, and Hayashi’s eyes widened when he recognized tears in her voice,
“please, let me finish.” Shocked into silence, Hayashi nodded dumbly, not sure
what else to say. She turned her misted over eyes back to him, her lips pursed
to keep the tears from flowing. “I love you Hayashi, but I can’t hurt anymore,
not like this.” She sniffled, smiling through her tears as she looked up at
him. “Isn’t it strange? I once remember you telling me I was the most
expressive person you knew, other than Yume, and yet, here I am, hiding
feelings just like you Hayashi.” Matsuri whispered, turning to leave, but
Hayashi gripped her arm firmly. Startled, she turned around to face him, only
to meet his sincere gaze. No words were needed in that moment.
Chapter 12: All About Love
Yume
sighed, tucking a small strand of hair behind her ear, making a face as she
tightened a bandage on a wounded man’s leg. It was that severe, just a small
scratch, though was big enough to need tending to, and small enough not to
require magic. They had been cutting back on using magic, since it was
draining, and even after all the commotion; Yume felt bone tired, but
incredibly happy. She never liked seeing people die, and that’s why she hadn’t
wanted to become a ninja, and all she wanted was to be with Kaoru, and she had
gotten that. Now all she needed was a child, a little angel to call her own.
She knew Kaoru would just dodge the subject, but over the years he had helped
her baby sit, and there was no way he hadn’t been able to pick up at least
something about children. She knew he would make a good father,
the tender look on his face when he helped her tuck in the children was enough
proof of that. She blinked, jolting out of her reverie when she felt a
comforting arm on her shoulder. Startled, she blinked,
looking up only to meet her husband’s concerned brown eyes.
“You
should rest.” Kaoru stated, and Yume shook her head stubbornly, turning and
walking to the next patient, bandages in hand.
“Just one more.” She promised, though she felt Kaoru grab her wrists.
“It
would do you no good if you worked yourself to death.” Kaoru said, and Yume
smiled, touched by Kaoru’s concern, and she smiled up at him.
“I
promise, just one more, then I’ll go home.” Yume said, pressing a quick kiss to
her husband’s forehead, who gave a slight smile as he watched his wife tend to
the injured. He had to admit, he was proud of her, everything about her. He had
been lucky he had admitted his feelings to her, or else someone else might have
snatched her up, and his throat tightened at the thought. Yume was his everything,
and he’d be lost without her. “Kaoru.” He blinked,
looking down at her while she just gave him a weary smile, leaning against him
for comfort, tilting her head to the side, her brown hair falling from her bun
and framing her face, making her look innocently beautiful.
“Ready?”
he asked, and she nodded, and he blinked, looking around as he sighed. “Where’s
Hayashi?” he asked, and Yume smiled her mysterious smile, looking up at him
with a giggle.
“Out talking with Matsuri. Those two have to catch up. Besides, Kenji can take
care of the remaining patients.” Yume said, gesturing over her shoulder to the
energetic Kenji, who was bouncing from patient to patient like he had been
doing for the last couple of hours, not even a trace of fatigue showing. Kaoru
nodded his head, smiling a bit. He turned, and he blinked, feeling Yume slip
her hand through his, and she smiled up at him, her brown eyes warm and
affectionate. It was still hard to get used to her openness, and… her love, but
Kaoru had been willing, and still was, to get used to it, for her. “I’m ready.”
Yume said with a smile, and Kaoru nodded, resting his head briefly atop hers,
then turning, hand in hand, and walking out into the night.
“Sakura.” Sakura groaned, slapping at the hand irritated that threatened to wake
her up, shaking her shoulders gently. Her sleep clogged mind couldn’t register
the voice, and all she knew was the person was trying to get her up, and that
alone was unforgivable.
“Five more minutes.” She mumbled sleepily, and she heard a slight
chuckle, and her eyes instantly flew open as she recognized it. “Pochi!” She said happily, flinging her arms around him,
overcome with happiness. It was silly to worry, since she knew he would have
been okay, but still… “Pochi I was so worried about you!” Sakura said, burying
her face in his shirt, and she didn’t need to look up to know he was blushing.
Pochi was always like that, shy and silent, but that’s what made him so
lovable, especially when he blushed like that.
“Sakura…”
He stuttered again, and she giggled softly, tilting her gaze to look up at him,
a small smile on her lips. She tilted her head to the side, giving him a smile
that made his heart flutter, and unconsciously a smile appeared on his face as
well.
“Uh huh.” She said, and Pochi blushed, not used to having her full attention on
him. It was unnerving, what she made him feel sometimes, just by looking at
him.
“I
uh, well, I uh…what I want to say is, uh…” Pochi stammered, and she smiled
again, looking up at him, pressing a slender finger to his lips. She looked at
him, her brown eyes affectionate, and she smiled again, making her orbs light
up with emotion like they always did.
“I
know… and I love you too, Pochi.” She giggled, and Pochi reddened, though he
felt elated. She… loved him back! Pochi could barely contain his happiness, and
when he looked down at her, he felt his heart soar again. He loved her, there
was no doubt, and he would always love her. With a smile, Sakura put a hand
behind his head, bringing it down to her soft lips, both blushing.
Yume
poked at Kaoru, giggling softly. Yume opened the window, smiling as she leaned
out, though not to far, letting the breeze caress her face and run its hand
through her hair. It was a beautiful day, the perfect one for a picnic. And it
would be lovely, since the whole gang was together again. She smiled a blissful
smile, turning back to Kaoru, who had put a pillow over his eyes, blocking out
the soon. Kaoru never really was a morning person.
“Kaoru
dear,” she said, when he groaned and rolled over, “it’s time to get up.” He
shook his head, mumbling sleepily, and she smiled, sitting down next to him,
poking slightly. “Kaoru, you can’t stay in bed all day.” Yume said, in a
slightly scolding voice, and she heard Kaoru chuckle a bit, and she gave a
light shriek when he pulled her down, wrapping a protective arm around her
waist. Yume struggled for a bit, then gave up, poking
at his nose with a small smile. “Oh, you’re such a brute.” Yume mock
complained, while Kaoru just opened his eyes, looking at her playfully.
“I
can stay in bed all day… if you’re with me.” He said with a grin, and Yume made
a face.
“Kaoru…”
She warned, though he snuggled up the crock of her neck, his warm breath
tickling, and she sighed, making a face. “You’re spoiled, you know that?” Yume
said, though she already felt her eyes drooping a bit, the sound of Kaoru’s
steady breathing like rain beating down on the roof gently and with pace.
“I
know.” Kaoru said, a small smile on his face as he
felt his wife sound sleepier with each passing moment.
“Did
you make up with Pochi?” Yume asked, yawning, and Kaoru felt a small smile on
his face. Pochi had come up to him last night, looking ashamed, and Kaoru knew
not to be too mad at him. He supposed he understood Pochi’s reasons, after the
talk with Hayashi. The two had quickly made amends, ridding themselves of all
the bad blood between them, and once again becoming like brothers. He knew
that’s what Yume wanted, and what Sakura did too, and it was nice to have his
little ‘brother’ back again.
“Yes
dear.” He said, and Yume smiled, snuggling up to him, wrapping her arms around
his neck.
“Good
boy.” Yume yawned, eyes finally sealing shut, as both spouses fell back into a
peaceful sleep, the birds chirping outside of their window.

Epilogue
Sakura
smiled through her tears, looking up at Hayashi and Matsuri, both with
determined looks on their faces, Matsuri with a slight smile, and Hayashi’s
expression was hid by the high collar of his cape.
“You
will be coming back in time for the wedding, right?” Sakura asked through her
tears, and Matsuri grinned, nodding her head.
“Sure,
me and Hayashi aren’t going far, just doing a bit of
traveling, and Hayashi is going to spread his medicine around. Which means
Kenji is in charge.” Matsuri smiled, and Hayashi nodded, blinking as he looked
back up at the sky, squinting his eyes, and then
looking back at them almost apologetically.
“We
should get going.” Hayashi said, and Matsuri nodded, waving over her shoulder
while Sakura waved frantically, calling out things through her tears, while
Pochi smiled, putting a comforting hand on his fiancée’s shoulder, smiling at
her slightly.
“They’ll
make it back on time, they always do.” Pochi said, and Sakura nodded, grinning
as she rubbed her eyes slightly, giggling softly.
“I
must sound so stupid.” Sakura said softly, shaking her head as she looked back
up at him, a smile on her face. Pochi shook his head, while Sakura just smiled
again, tilting her gaze to the side, and her smile widened. “Yume!
Kaoru!” Sakura called, waving her hand frantically in
the air, and Pochi laughed at her enthusiasm.
“Where’s Hayashi and Matsuri?” Yume asked, and Sakura sighed,
gesturing over her shoulder, and Yume sighed, placing a hand on her rounding
stomach. “And I was hoping to see them off, but this one was causing a ruckus.”
Yume said, hand still on her rounded stomach, while Kaoru smiled,
his arms around her as he smiled, and Sakura giggled.
“Which one, Kaoru or the little one?” Sakura joked, while Yume
giggled also, and Kaoru rolled his eyes, though his smile was playful. Pochi
just looked at his mentor, shaking his head, his eyes laughing.
“Geez
Kaoru, how did we get caught up with women like these? So
mean and rude.” Pochi said, and Kaoru nodded, smirking a bit while the
girls had mocked hurt and anger. Then Sakura burst out laughing, then the rest
followed, just glad to be in each other’s presence, like old times. Sakura just
smiled, leaning against Pochi’s shoulder as Yume waved, dragging Kaoru off, and
she sighed happily, looking back up at Pochi, a small smile on her face.
“You
think you’d like it if we had a little one running around soon?” Sakura asked,
and Pochi smiled, wrapping his arms protectively around her, nestling his head
on hers, inhaling her flowery scent that had always soothed him, and remind him
of her.
“I
wouldn’t mind.” Pochi said, and she laughed, tilting her head to the side as
she watched the sunset with him, the beautiful orange orb settling itself
behind the mountains, the last strands of fiery red, orange, and bright yellow
tossed across the sky, while deep blues, light pinks, and dark purples started
to fill the sky. “I wouldn’t mind…” Pochi said again, and Sakura sighed,
leaning against his strong muscular chest, smiling slightly. Maybe that tearful
