Help meet our Goal and Save A Life in an Hour - Your Donation is Important!

Helpful Hints from the VBS:

Before Donating
*
Mildly anemic? Try taking a Geritol tablet the night before.
* Get a good night's sleep
* Drink plenty of fluids in the 24 hours before donating
* Eat a good breakfast/meal one to four hours before donating
* Avoid caffeine about two hours before giving - it can increase your pulse rate and constrict
   your veins.

At The Blood Drive
*Bring a picture ID and a list of any medications you are taking
*
Are you a first time donor? Mention this to each VBS staffer you meet and they will put you at ease and answer any questions you may have.  Go with a friend whose given before.
*Answer some questions about health and lifestyle choices
*Receive a mini-physical: blood pressure, temperature, pulse rate and iron level
*RELAX, take a few deep breaths, soon you will have given a gift that can help up to 3 people
*Tell the blood collection specialist immediately if you have any odd feelings: hot or cold
sensations, fatigue, pain or lightheadedness.  We can elevate your legs and put an ice pack
under your head to make you more cofortable.

After Donating
*As usual, snacks and drinks will be available!  Sit and enjoy refreshments for a few minutes!
*Drink plenty of fluids
*Avoid heavy lifting for the rest of the day
*Leave the bandage on for 4 to 6 hours
*Don't skip meals

Have you been called by the VBS?  On-Site vs. Blood Center Donating
Wendy Snowburger at VBS said unless a particular blood type is in very short supply,
giving on-site is preferable to coming to the Blood Centers.
VBS is trying to reach people who are not able to donate at all four drives each year.  VBS's database may be updated so that our donors will receive calls after the blood drive rather than before.  This will allow people who missed the blood drive to come to one of the Blood Centers to give shortly after the drive and still remain on schedule for on-site donating next time.
If you do go to a Blood Center, please give them our Group Number 2035.
