She recalled her experiences commuting from Avellino, a 90-minute's bus ride from sweet-smelling Naples... "And Away We Go From Avellino" by Chris Burmeister Garza '83: "I was just one of the Avellino bunch that made the long trek back and forth to Naples High School each day. There seemed to be an average of about eight high school students that lived in the Avellino area and we traveled roughly an hour-and-a-half to get to the school on Via Manzoni. Most of us had a parent associated with the U.S. Air Force at Mt. Vergine. We lived in a slightly different world than most other Naples students - up on a mountain with cold weather and snow during the winter. One memory that stands out clearly in my mind was the announcement that seemed to be heard day after day - 'The Avellino bus has just arrived. Please admit these students to class.' We were frequently late, mainly because of traffic once we go! t off the autostrada and hit the Tanenziale and Naples' streets, but sometimes due to a much needed stop at a Pavesi. The bus became a second home to us in a sense. We usually had a bus that seated about 28 people - this gave us plenty of room to sleep, do our homework, eat or whatever else we wanted to do. Our own homes became more like hostels. The bus had to wait for anyone involved in extracurricular activities after school. This meant that I was picked up at 6:30 a.m. from my house and didn't return home until sometimes as late as 7:30 p.m. When a sports team had a game, most of my weekends were spent away on trips as well. Even the "home" competitions were "away" competitions for me because I had to find someone to stay with in Naples. One other strong memory about Avellino was the devestating earthquake we experienced in November, 1980. We were stranded for several days because the bus couldn't make it through the rubble to pick us up. Some of us were without water and ! electricity for a few days and many of us spent nights at the community center. It was a frightening time for us, but we made it back to school where we were allowed to shower first before going to class. I can remember feeling a little embarrassed over those first few days back to school because every time a truck passed the school, the classroom would rumble and I would just about jump out of my desk to take cover. I can look back now and laugh. Living in Avellino was definitely a unique experience and one that I wouldn't trade for in the world." 4/99 Hello everyone. I went to NAHS from 85-87.
