Although he can be quick to anger, one way he settles it is with the game of Duel Monsters (besides threatening to use his fists). He wasn't very good at the game at first, but with the help of his friends and the expert training of Yugi's Grandpa, he was able to overcome the battles he faced at The Duelist Kindom competition and the Battle City tornament.
Even with his funniness, Duel Monsters skills, and hot-headed ways, Joey's one with a good heart and will do anything for anybody. Like with the Duelist Kingdom competition, he wanted to go with Yugi to the Duelist Kingdom (even though he didn't have an invitation) to help him rescue his Grandpa from the clutches of Maxamillion Pegasus. But once he found out that there was prize money involved, he insisted that he had to go. You see, Joey has a younger sister named Serenity (as menchined from above) and she was born with not-very-good eye sight. One day, Joey got a video from her, saying that time is running out and she could go blind, but unless she gets a special kind of surgry done, she'll be able to have the good eyes she deserves. So he entered the tornament to win the prize money to pay for her operation.
It's a good thing that Joey has friends beacuse he really needs them! There've been times when he'd be losing a duel and his self-confidense will drop, but his friends'll be there to cheer him on and encourage him to never give up! His confidense would come back and he'd be on his way to victory!
