REMINISCENCES  - MR. JOHN FRY... WOODVILLE. S.A.
As found in the book "A History of Woodville". It has not been absolutely established that this John Fry is in fact John Charles Fry, but the details all seem to point to this being a very distinct possibility.

"My father was a weaver who came from Taunton. I was born in a cottage on Woodville Road.  It had 4 rooms and under the same roof was a 2 roomed stable. My father had a carrying business.

I went to school at Port Adelaide before the Woodville school was opened and then I went there. Woodville School was opened in l878.  I left school at l5 to help my father and carried on the carrying business until I retired. For many years we had horse teams and at one time had nearly 5O horses. We had l5 acres of land and grew most of the feed for them. We worked hard, for we had to be at Port Adelaide by 9am. when we were carrying for Captain Hart, and we seldom left Adelaide for home before 7 p.m.  We sometimes gave a lift home to some girls who worked in a boot factory and did not knock off till about 8 p.m. When we got home we had the horses to see to and it was quite late by the time we had our tea and were ready for bed.
In those days there were very few amusements, except what we found for ourselves. I was always fond of reading and of music, especially singing and went occasionally to a concert or to the Theatre in Adelaide. I played football as a lad, but did not care for cricket.  We got up to a bit of mischief sometimes, and used to take my uncle's trike (he was a railway ganger) out of its shed and go down the Grange line to the beach, where we whistled the girls out, and they were willing enough to come.On Bay Day (December 28th) we used to go to the Bay in a spring cart. I was one of the oldest freemasons and used to attend their meetings.I well  remember how bad the roads were in the winter.  They could only be repaired then, because we were always short of water in the summer and the drays had to drive on the side of the road, where they would be bogged to the axles over and over again.  It was hard work, digging them out.   Our work  became easier when we gave up the horse teams and changed to motor trucks, but we all missed the horses.I remember the old Grange train and the sand drifts on the line and also the railway line from Albert Parkto the Findon gravel pits. There was a small engine and the trucks for the gravel; the line saved a lot of cartage.Woodville has been a nice place to live in and I have been happy here.  I have never quarrelled with anyone and I don't think I have any enemies."

NOTE:  Information from Marie Bartsch (Slade) Grand-daughter of Emily Violet Fry and Frank Slade.
"  I have been told that where the Queen Elizabeth Hospital is now, is the land that the Fry family owned.  A lot of the land had to be relinquished to the government when the war broke out, but don't know the reason for this.

Charles Fry was one of nine teamsters who travelled to Port Darwin with the Northern Territor y Survey expedition  under the leadership of the South Australian Surveyor-General, G.W. Goyd er, arriving on the "Moonta" 5 February, 1869. Goyder adopted Port Darwin, surveyed the Tow n of Palmerston (now Darwin)as well as large tracts of hinterland. The task was successfull y completed within the year.  Charles Fry was one of the men who made this possible. Having completed their task, the members of the expedition departed Port Darwin on the"Gulnare" 28 September 1869 arriving Port Adelaide in October. Fry and his wife and family were among  the first party to arrive back at Port Darwin on the "Kohinoor" in January 1870. Charles Fry departed on the ill-fated "Gothenburg"  on 16 February  1875 and was downed when the ship hit a reef and sank on the Great Barrier Reef during a severe cyclone on 25 February, 1875
Fry Court in Palmerston, a satelite town near Darwin is named in his honour as well as anothe r street at Fred"s Pass just south of darwin.
A Relief Fund was set up in Darwin and a total of 9,240pounds, lO shillings was collected    Mrs. Fry and her 5 children were granted 1,025 pounds.  A list of donors and amounts don ated appear in the Northern Territory Times and Gazette in 1875. In 1874 an advertisement wa s placed in the Northern Territory Times and Gazette offering "For  sale a 4 roomed cottage c omfortably furnished, a cow in milk with fowls and pigeons, situated in Cavenagh street.  App ly to Charles Fry."It appears Elizabeth Fry and children may have returned to Adelaide about this time and Charl es stayed on perhaps to clear  up all the loose ends in Darwin and then decided to return o n the Gothenburg!

NOTE:   There is a mystery surrounding Jacob Acraman, as despite extensive searching, there has been no connection to the Fry family through marriage found.  A letter was found in the papers of Mrs. Ivy Fry, wife of  Herbert Fry, addressed to Mother and Sister, (no names), a South Australian school certificate for a Kate Acraman and there was an entry in the family bible noting the death of Jacob Acraman.
Through the efforts of Karen Dickson, a GGgrand daughter of `Joseph Acraman, his birth record was found under the name of Joseph Eggremont- father Jacob and mother Maria Woodroofe.   We are hoping to establish a definite link through the Morgan family.

Thomas and Catherine Fry were married in South Australia but moved to Western Australia

Thomas left Adelaide on the S.S. Tenterden? on the l9th March, 1891.
The rest of the family left on the S.S. Bullara on the l7th June, 1891

This information was found on a small piece of paper, written in pencil and found between the leaves of the family bible from   Shirly Anderson, daughter of Thomas Fry. It also listed t he birth dates of Ivy Irene Fry, and Thomas Leonard Fry.
