Review Questions: Chapter 18

1.      In the first part of this chapter, Rachel finds herself in a situation which causes her to consider being more strict with Eppie—a situation that ironically reminds her of her father's behavior toward her when she was younger.  Similarly, in the second part of the chapter, the Mayor finds himself wishing for something to occur which he has always despised—something that causes him to momentarily think of his daughter.  What is the fundamental nature of these dual ironies?  What do these ironies imply about the two characters?

2.      How do Rachel and the Mayor react when they realize the ironies inherent in their respective situations?  What do their reactions say about them, about the reasons for their ongoing estrangement, and about the effect that that estrangement may be having on each of them?  Would it have surprised you (i.e., would it have seemed out of character) if either of them had reacted differently?
