Review Questions: Chapter 12

1.      Describe Eppie’s thoughts as she sits in her hospital bed trying to decide what she will do after she is released.  Why is she hesitant to accept Rachel’s offer to move in with her?  How would you characterize Eppie’s feelings toward Rachel at this point?  What makes Rachel different than most other people Eppie has known?  Given her past experience, do you think Eppie’s mindset is reasonable or unreasonable?

2.      Rachel demonstrates a high degree of energy and resolve in her efforts to attain guardianship of Eppie.  What seems to be the source of such great motivation on her part?  Does Eppie seem to share her sense of enthusiasm about their new relationship?  Why or why not?

3.      When Rachel and Caldwell first met two days earlier, they quickly got into a nasty argument.  Now, when they unexpectedly encounter each other again in the hospital, no such argument ensues, even though the makings of one are still clearly present.  Which character’s behavior is most responsible for this difference?  What has happened to explain this difference?
