The Divine Comedy: introduction

Introduction

The Divine Commedy is also famous for the proud character of its author. Nevertheless Dante was a very sensitive and delicate person. We think that the gentleness is an important aspect of the Comedia, and it comes from the pagan "pietas" and the Christian love of Christ. We consider the Divine Comedy to be a foundation of the western culture, with its attitude to construct peace.

In the second Canto, Beatrice adresses Virgilio, to lead him to save Dante.

58 Angelically tun'd her speech address'd:
59 O courteous shade of Mantua! thou whose fame
60 Yet lives, and shall live long as nature lasts!
61 A friend, not of my fortune but myself,
62 On the wide desert in his road has met
63 Hindrance so great, that he through fear has turn'd.
64 Now much I dread lest he past help have stray'd,
65 And I be ris'n too late for his relief,
66 From what in heaven of him I heard. Speed now,
67 And by thy eloquent persuasive tongue,
68 And by all means for his deliverance meet,
69 Assist him. So to me will comfort spring.

58 'O spirit courteous of Mantua,
59 Of whom the fame still in the world endures,
60 And shall endure, long-lasting as the world;
61 A friend of mine, and not the friend of fortune,
62 Upon the desert slope is so impeded
63 Upon his way, that he has turned through terror,
64 And may, I fear, already be so lost,
65 That I too late have risen to his succour,
66 From that which I have heard of him in Heaven.
67 Bestir thee now, and with thy speech ornate,
68 And with what needful is for his release,
69 Assist him so, that I may be consoled.

60 e durer quanto 'l mondo lontana,
63 s nel cammin, che volt' per paura;
