How Do we Know about the Norse myths?
Most of what we know about the legends of the Norse myth comes from two books called the Eddas.  Edda may mean either of two things, or something totaly different.  It could mean "Great-Grandmother" or it could mean "Poetics".  The first, or Elder Edda was written in about 1056 AD, and was in the form of poems.  It included many stories about Gods, creatures, and famous people.  The second, or Younger Edda was written in 1640,  and it was in prose.  This Edda only had a few stories in it.  The language used by the Norse people was written in Runes, in alphabets called Futharks. The first six letters spelled FUTHARK, as you can see in the pictures to the right and left.  Each letter represented a sound and a word.
This rune represents F and the word "Fehu", or gold.
U, "Uruz", auroch (a horned animal)
TH, "Thurisaz", giants
A, "Ansuz", Odin
R, "Raido", journeying
K, "Kenaz", torch
