This one is self-insertion beyond belief. The intended audience numbers four, including myself. The only reason I'm putting this up is on the off chance that someone wants to read a mildly entertaining, super-psychotic, uber-violent romp in the Fushigi Yuugi setting.
In case you're new to Traveller, allow me to give you some background. Traveller is a science-fiction role-playing game, the same way Dungeons & Dragons is a fantasy role-playing game. Although, instead of a dungeon crawl, the player-characters engage in ship-to-ship battles, or ground adventures, or political intrigue, or -- well, the list goes on. It's a role-playing game where the weapon of choice is a gauss rifle instead of a sword (at least that's the weapon of my choice).
The self-insertion part is easy -- one of the main characters, Jackson Sakurako, is my Traveller character.
To be quite honest, I did not start out wanting to write a Trav/FY crossover. The idea came to me as I considered Yui's relationship with Nakago. Yui is a fifteen year old girl who's been through some traumatic shocks, the least of which is being suddenly transported to a different world with a different paradigm (I paid good money for that word!). Nakago, who is most likely a genius in matters military, and, as we learn during the course of the series, an expert manipulator, is more than a match for Yui. How on earth can she resist the manipulations of this expert? He plays her like a fiddle. He plays his enemies like a virtuoso. He needs to be stopped.
Enter Jackson.
I wanted a character who was a match for Nakago to play the part of Seiryuu no Miko. That character had to be no stranger to intrigues, and a mind for tactics would be a definite bonus. Jackson was perfect for this role.
At first, I was going to pit Jackson as Seiryuu no Miko against Miaka as Suzaku no Miko. Then I told my darling husband about my intentions. Darling Husband is also our Game Master for our Traveller games, so he had a pip of a suggestion:
Why not make Anna Di'Amato Suzaku no Miko?
My response: Oh. My. Gawd.
Thinks it over some more.
Oh. My. F***ing. Gawd.
Laughs hysterically.
Anna is one of our favorite NPCs -- Non Player Characters, to you non-gamers. Basically, an NPC is a character that the Game Master brings in to help us out and give us information, or provide amusement, or whatever. Anna Di'Amato is part of the ship's crew. She was a stewardess until she got drafted into the Imperial Army, and then got stationed on a hell-hole of a planet called Efate, during a hell-hole of a war. Think Viet-Nam, but much nastier. I won't go into Anna's experiences here, even though I reference them in the story. See what I mean about limited audience?
Needless to say, Anna is our pet psychopath. We love her.
This also changes the motivations of a number of characters in the story.
