24 July, 2004

Taken in the lobby of the Gion Hotel, where we stayed. :) This is the second floor, and it has free wireless internet.  It also has computers @ 10 yen a minute, which is cheaper than using a phone here in the US. =)
This is taken in front of the Nijo Castle Entrance. What you can't see is the gaggle of seniors on the bus to the left of the view in the parking lot. 95% had umbrellas. I kid you not.

A sign board In front of Nijo Castle

Just an old sign that I couldn't read, presumably telling the history of the Castle.

Another picture in front of the gate.

This is a picture of the actual castle, taken from the "main entrance", where people of huge importance must enter, because there are few places for shoes there.

That's me with the camera, filming the Pavilion thing, which is obviously not going anywhere.

Group shot in front of the beautiful landscape.

A perfect picture of the Golden Temple, but for the video camera of some men who were shooting a documentary or something. Because that is one sweet camera.

A closer picture of the building. Notice the detail of the houoh on top. This building comes complete with a lightning rod to avoid embarrassing fires!

This is the tree ship. Notice the ladder? It's leaning against the masts. The front of the boat is coming towards the camera. From what I'm told, the bush just grew this way, and then someone noticed and decided to keep it in this shape.

Some nice scenery.

More scenery, this one of the lake, which has koi in it. Freakin' big fish!

This is the Koi Waterfall. If you look closely, the two stones with the water pouring on them resemble fish climbing the waterfall. This symbolizes strength and perseverance.

That's a good group of us gathered about a window, where a man inside is stamping and signing Mr. H's shrine/temple book.

This is one of the few pictures of Kyoto University I can give you guys. That building in the background is the main building--we're just leaving lunch, after the salad goo.

See the flashlight light? It's presumably on the tiny salamander. Which is the size of a gecko, so the purpose of this picture is to show you how silly 20 people can look while staring at a salamander.

Taken with my camera's night vision. The Gion Festival was going on, and I did everything I possibly could to get a picture of it. Unfortunately, not even this pic came out well. But you can still see the Gion Temple, lit up as bright as can be!
