| How does a boy band survive in a day when teen pop became as pass as talk of Britney and Justins breakup? For Plus One, survival came by taking risks. While it would have made perfect sense for the guys to simply play it safe, Plus One made drastic changes to stay current in a changing musical climate. And the results of this years CCM Readers Awards seem to indicate the fans continued appreciation. While not as successful as its initial outing, Plus Ones second album, Obvious (Atlantic), certainly was no flop. Dominating the sales chart when it debuted at No. 1 and continuing to keep pace with industry elite, the group proved to be more than a one-album wonder with songs like "Goin Crazy" becoming playlist favorites on the likes of Radio Disney. In support of the album, a tour soon began that boasted huge production that could compete with Britney, J-Lo or Creed. But when low ticket sales forced several of the shows to cancel or relocate to smaller venues, the rumor mill quickly began churning with assertions that Plus Ones end would come sooner than later. In an interview on their tour bus after a recent show, Nate Cole voices the groups frustrations with fame. "While were certainly very blessed with all thats happened, the daily demands of the job werent always easy," Cole asserts. "It became increasingly taxing from an emotional, physical and even a spiritual level, and that caused us to really consider exactly why were doing this and what our futures hold." Artistic differences about the groups more progressive direction also caused a change in the groups lineup of Cole, Jason Perry, Nathan Walters, Gabe Combs and Jeremy Mhire, with Perry ultimately deciding that a break would be the best move for him. "I felt like it would be great to take some downtime to re-evaluate," Perry says. "The guys also thought that would be a good thing, based on some musical ideas they wanted to experiment with. So theyre experimenting with some new things while Im away, and Im beginning to experiment with things and possibly writing for a solo record. Im laying low and having so much fun relaxing. Its been crazy from the time I was 17 with all the non-stop touring." While the group will reunite for a few Christmas tour dates to promote their holiday record, Plus Ones management concurs on the groups official Web site at plusoneonline.com that the future of the group remains an unknown. But despite all the changes, Plus One remains a CCM fan favorite with domination in five categories in this years Readers Awards. "I feel that Plus One is the best band ever because theyve strengthened my relationship with God," says CCM reader Sylvia Kim, a senior at St. Joseph Notre Dame High in Alameda, California. "Ive met them before, and they are such an inspiration to me with their music, testimonies and message. A lot of artists have influenced me but not as much as Plus One. They seem so down-to-earth and humble." -from www.plusoneonline.com |

| Next up on stage was the reason many young girls made it to the showPlus One. No longer the stylized boy band a la Nsync, the band is barely distinguishable as they rock out to the songs that endeared them to its fan in the first place. But did the fact that they head bang and play instruments deter the gaggle of screaming girls? Nope, not one bit! While its still strange to see them with a new rock n light, the band seems to be committed and excited about what theyre doing. After the show, Nate Cole told CCMmagazine.com that theyve been writing a bunch of new songs and will be heading into the studio in March to record for a possible summer release. -Thanks to Plus ONE Kingdom for this!! |
