| MY PHILOSOPHY OF PHOTOGRAPHY By Cynthia Cassiday One of my first memories is looking out the back door of our home and being awed by the trees, the grass, and the sky. I had just gotten my first pair of glasses and I was amazed at the beauty and detail of the world. Forty-eight years have gone by and I am even more enthralled by the beauty around me. I would not call myself an artist, but I enjoy the images that the Great Artist gave us. When my husband, Chris, was in the Air Force he brought home a "fancy" camera from Japan, I took pictures for a time but put it away when our four children were growing up. (Something I regret.) When our sons were playing Jr. High, High School, and college basketball I got out the camera again. It took me five years and lots of film to get Matt and Nathan and the basketball in the air without the blur. I was always looking for that perfect shot. The boys quit playing basketball, but I didn't put the camera down. The pictures I take trigger an emotional response in me. My pictures are a window into a good feeling, a love I have for a person, or for me to remember how beautiful and fleeting life is. People are my favorite subject because I am reminded how special and unique each person is--created in the image of God. I also like to take a picture that reminds me of the character and attributes of God and that makes my mind go deeper into appreciating the Creator of all things. I have always taken pictures for our family and me because they represent memories. Since I know pictures represent memories I especially like to take wedding pictures. They represent more than images on paper, but are the very images of the times and events that will never leave our hearts. When I was two years old with new glasses and saw the world for the first time, this gave me a desire to appreciate what see and not take it for granted. My photography collection is my reminder to find joy in people and things that God has given me. I laugh to myself remembering I got a D in college art because ~.I couldn't take ordinary things and draw them abstractly. Now 1 know it is because my image of beauty is found in the people and. things around me that represent the times, seasons, and the emotions of my life. (If you would like to arrange for Cynthia to take your family pictures, contact our Frontier Country Museum office at [email protected] and we will help you get in contact with her).. |
