A Brief History of Alaska

1867....... Secretary of State William Seward negotiates the purchase of Alaska from Russia,         for $7.2 Million, or just under $2.00 an acre. His political foes scorn this purchase, labeling it "Seward's Folly."  Around the turn of the century, gold is discovered in Juneau, Nome, and other towns.

1923.....President Warren G. Harding travels to Alaska to drive the  ceremonial "Golden Spike" completing the Alaska Railroad, which connects Anchorage with Seward and Fairbanks. On his return trip home Harding dies in San Francisco.

1959.....President Dwight D. Eisenhower signs legislation making Alaska the 49th State.
