Santana declines $25 million offer

From the Seats, February 1, 2005

MINNEAPOLIS - I was not aware of it, but the Twins had a 3 year $25 million deal on the table to Johan Santana which he declined. That comes out to $8.33 million per year, about $1.5 million more than he is asking for in arbitration.

So what is Johan’s plan? It could be to get that 2 or 4 year deal he is seeking, not 3. A 2 year deal would most likely make more sense for Johan. He could than go anywhere he wants and pretty much make what he wants. That is, if he continues to do what he has done this past year. Which  think he can do.

I think Terry Ryan wants to get this done without going to arbitration with him. They want to get him signed for at least the next two years and any time you can avoid arbitration is a good thing. On WCCO at TwinsFest Ryan did say it is just a matter of years and how much. Well duh, but that was about all he would tell us. My guess, he wants to get him through that first year of free agency as a Twin under a 3 year contract. I would than assume that a 4 year deal might get to expensive and ties up a lot of money for a year he cant easily project what a team will be like at that time.

I think a deal will get done. It might be at the last minute before going into arbitration but I think a deal will indeed get done.

We have yet to hear anything about Kyle Lohse and Carlos Silva yet and if there have been any offers to those two.

There is mutual interest in Magglio Ordonez and the Detroit Tigers. That would be a huge deal for the Tigers if a healthy Ordonez would end up in the motor city.
