Twins low ball Santana From the Seats, January 13, 2005 MINNEAPOLIS - The Twins have made their first offer to Johan Santana. If they want to sign him, it better be the first of many. They threw a measly $19.5 million for three years on the table. Don’t laugh, this is not joke. The Pioneer Press says that industry sources say that it could take as much as $48 million over 4 years to sign Santana. Santana is looking for a 2 or 4 year deal, and I would guess around 7 to 10 million a year. Good news is the Pioneer Press also reports that the Twins are supposed to make a four year offer, as soon as Wednesday. I am not sure if taking the route where the bidding starts out low is the best way to go. This might insult Santana, not something you want to do to the best pitcher in baseball. Not something I want to do to a fan favorite. Not something you want to do to a guy I just bought a jersey of. Not something you want to do to a guy who still might be unhappy about sitting in the bullpen for so long. Aim high here Twins, don't try to “just get by” it is not the right path. Of course, we don't want to lose complete trust in Ryan. Get your TwinsFest tickets soon! MINNEAPOLIS - TwinsFest is right around the corner.
