D.C. mayor signs for Nationals

From the Seats, January 2, 2005

WASHINGTON  - Just like signing for a FexEx package Mayor Anthony Williams signed legislation last Wednesday to bring major league baseball back to the nations capital.

D.C. has been on a bit of a roller coaster, from getting the Expos to maybe not being able to pay for a new stadium, or agree on how to get it done. To this now, that will more than likely make the Montreal Expos become the Washington Nationals.

Bud Selig does need to declare that RFK Stadium will be satisfactory for the 2005 season. If he does it would make the first move for major league baseball since 1971 when the Washington Senators became the Texas Rangers.

The legislation will renovate RFK Stadium and allows the city to sell up to $584 million in bonds to pay for a 41,000 seat stadium.
