From the Seats, February 15, 2005

MINNEAPOLIS - It makes for a great Valentine’s Day! Mid day on Monday it was announced that Johan Santana and the Minnesota Twins have agreed on a 4 year deal, the biggest in Minnesota Twins history.

This can be said to be a bit of a risk, but that is ok once in a while, it is ok to take a risk with the best pitcher in baseball. Thank you Carl, Terry and Johan!

Santana, Twins agree to 4-year deal

Pioneer Press

American League Cy Young Award winner Johan Santana agreed to terms on a four-year contract with the Twins, the team announced Monday.

Terms of the deal were not immediately available, and is contingent upon the pitcher passing a physical, but the Twins and Santana were reportedly discussing a contract in the neighborhood of $40 million over four years.

The deal keeps Santana and the Twins from having to go to arbitration Tuesday to determine Santana's 2005 salary. Santana was asking for $6.8 million, and the team was offering $5 million.

Santana, 25, went 20-6 in 2004 and led the American League in ERA (2.61) and strikeouts (265).
