| EFR recently had an interesting exchange with well-regarded fanfic writer MoonlitAngel007. Becoming an overnight success with Mend My Heart, she has since gone on to write a series of additionally praised tales in other areas of fanfiction, while again making time for "EarthBound" with her mystery Rebirth and the somewhat more adventure-focused Mirror Image, a story that combines the casts of "Mother" and "Mother 2." Here, the well-spoken, emotionally descriptive scribe gives us a closer look at her view of Paula and Ness, discusses how she joined the ranks of "EarthBound" fans, mentions who some of her favorite characters are, and shares some of her guidelines on fiction writing in general. | |||||||||||
-Does the world really need another "Mother 1"/"Mother 2" crossover? :) O_O Okay, first of all I didn't know there were many "Mother" 1/2 crossovers. Therefore, I can't really compare. I just liked the way it sounded. And if I choose to write that way, then that's the way it's going to be.

-You claimed to have become an "EarthBound" fan before playing "EarthBound." How did that happen? It's kind of a long story. I was really into "Super Smash Brothers," and that's when I noticed Ness. He seemed interesting, so I wanted to check out his game. I liked the way it seemed a lot, and I instantly grew attached to the characters. Then, I began visiting Starmen.Net a lot, and I so badly wanted to play "EarthBound." I was obsessed with the game even though I didn't play it! (I was thought weird. Oh, good times... ) Finally I learned how to work a ROM and an emulator, so I was happy. That game is addicting...

-How long have you been into writing? About two years.

-In general, how do you describe the relationship/feelings between Paula and Ness? It's not too casual, not too astounding. I think they have a nice, cute little attachment going on. If the situation is where Ness and Paula have not committed, then I see it this way: Paula knows that she has intense feelings towards Ness, but she is too shy to tell him and is afraid of what he may think or if she is rejected. It definitely isn't lust, since she has known him for a long time and the crush only got stronger over time, and also because she didn't just decide to "fall in love" one day. There is no such thing as falling in love. If you could fall in love like tripping in a ditch, then you could fall right back out. Anyway, as for Ness, his feelings churn up inside him. He is unaware of his feelings for Paula, but sometimes they try to make themselves visible. She is different from most girls, and she is special. If Ness were to realize he indeed has something for Paula, whenever he looks at her or thinks of her, his relationship with her as friends will change, since they'll both feel awkward around each other. If they were together, I think they would be compatible. Ness is there to teach her trust and love, while she can show him how to control his powers and get him familiar with the world around him, and to discover these strange mysteries of life. They can both offer each other support. The downfall is that they are on their first love. First loves can really mix up feelings and create conflicts with lack of experience in a relationship. Of course, it is definitely possible to patch up those spots with an apology or a fresh new start, depending on what happened to pull them apart.

-Who's your favorite character from both "Mother" games? Ooooh, tough one. From "Mother," I'd have to say Loid is my favorite. In "Mother 2," that's more difficult. I really like Paula and Poo. I guess it's a tie between those characters, but my favorite non-Chosen Four character is Tony the Fantabulous. ^_^ I like all the eight main characters almost equally, but those ones just stand out.

-You've mentioned not really liking ACs, but you're using some in your latest story. Have your feelings on Author Characters changed? They haven't. ACs can be used to balance the story and create plots, but otherwise I dislike using them AND when other people use them. It actually depends. Mary Sues are ACs I absolutely can't STAND, but if an author decides to create an AC with more character, then I'm fine with that. Take for example, Michelle from The Perpetual Adventures by Michael DePalma. She is a perfect example of an AC I like, but I have some beef with her being with Ness, even though I know that's only a plot device. :/ I have some issues...

-Are your ACs going to have big or small roles in Mirror Image? Not too big. Actually, my ACs will usually have diminutive roles. I just really like using the original characters.

-About how long did it take for you to create Mend My Heart? How long were you planning it and how long was it in production? It took me two days, if I can recall. One for writing it on paper, and one for typing it. At first one part of it was rushed, but I polished it up. So there it stands, beautiful. My first "EarthBound" fanfiction. I'm surprised it did well, but I'm glad people like it. I planned it for only one night, actually. My sister wanted me to write it mainly for her, and she wanted it to be Paula and Jeff together. All in all, it didn't take much time.

-What have been some of your favorite moments in your "EarthBound" stories so far? Well... sorry, but I can't be sure which. I'm not satisfied with Rebirth at all, and I'm thinking about ripping it off. That one just shot off out of nowhere, and it's rather stale. The plot absolutely sucks in the beginning. I guess my favorite moments are when Tony was following Jeff in Mirror Image and some random parts in Mend My Heart. I have only just begun, but I feel like I'm on a rocky start.

-What are some of your favorite "EarthBound" fanfics right now? Oooh, heh. I like UnderBound, EarthBound: The Perpetual Adventures, Unusual Species, and Cycle. I like others, it's just that none seem to be coming to mind.

-What advice would you give anyone thinking about writing fanfiction? Well, I'd start off by telling them that there's something in this world called Grammar. Then again, everyone who wants to even start writing fanfiction should know that. You really want to dig deep down in your mind for ideas, and try not to throw out all of your work like mwa. I think that some of those ideas might have been winners. When you get writer's block, usually just taking a break, listening to music, or watching TV helps. Give yourself some time to think. Also, for description, try to think of a way to describe the road instead of "We walked on the road." How about instead, "We walked briskly on the coarse road." Describing something to paint the picture really helps. Also, DO NOT clutter the poor thing with dialogue. That ruins it for me and other people. Sure it works good in a humor 'fic, but when you're serious, write less dialogue and describe the setting more, or what the character senses or how they are doing something. Also, making it seem like something else works too. Instead of "The ashes fell down from the sky" you could try "The sky fell with soft black rain." Technically, you're describing it as something else than what it really is. It creates a really nice picture in the reader's mind.
