It happens all the time, and it's why we're here today.
When a story captures the imagination of the audience, sometimes certain members of that audience will create stories of their own based on it. These include science fiction novels that expand on famous works, television programs that present the "new adventures of" a titular character...and stories on the Internet, widely known as fanfiction.

This is a tribute to the greatest work in that regard by fans of Nintendo's "Mother" series of video games. This is a testament to the vision of Shigesato Itoi and the powerful influence of his great creativity. This is a shout-out to all the names -- Reid, Rune, EBounding, Tomato, SimonBob, Falcon24, JamesPicard_007 -- who've been responsible for helping to make it all possible. And this is a nod to all readers who take the time to offer feedback on the work they've enjoyed.
From the earliest fanfiction to the latest, from the Normal to the Neo-, and from Starmen.Net to Fanfiction.Net (and everywhere in between),
EFR has observed, reviewed, reviewed some more, and finally settled on the conclusion that follows. It's an encomium that will hopefully be enjoyed by readers new and old, casual and passionate, time and again -- both in the present and for a long period to come.
If you've had enough formality, then let's get started.
Right now, we're taking a look at the 10 finest chapters out there. Next, we'll examine the medium's five greatest characters. Later, we'll run down the five best battles. And of course, we'll close with the top 25 stories.
A note to everyone reading this who's thinking about writing an "EarthBound" fanfic: By all means, do so.
Another one to those whose stories are covered here: Congratulations on a job well done...and keep up the good work.
The 10 Best
EarthBound Fanfiction
Chapters Ever
A great series has great chapters, and this section is dedicated to the highlights of some of the best serial reading available in "EarthBound" fanfiction. If you happen to be a new reader, or someone who's yet to come across these installments, the list below will show exactly what you've got to look forward to. In short, these are the overall finest works when it comes to stories within stories.
10. "The Mountain Cabin"  (Reflections)
By PSI322

In this installment, the remarkably empathetic Reflections series presents a look at one very special night in Paula's life. While having a sleep-over at a cousin's place in Happy Happy Village, Paula's thoughts inevitably drift back to her time of captivity. The memory haunts her to the point that she eventually must sneak out into the night and face the cabin alone, needing to confront the place of her torment in order to put it fully behind her.
Reading "The Mountain Cabin," one gets a new understanding of just what it meant to Paula when Ness finally came and saved her that day, and what it means for her to now save herself in a sense.
A very touching, well-written, and memorable chapter.

9. "...Is Always a Bad Sign"  (South of Summers)
By Cammie Jensen

The follow-up to "A Beautiful Day..." and the slightly funnier of the two installments, this engaging piece of comedy follows the heroes as they attempt to check out of a hospital, sit down to lunch, hang out at their hotel room, and then peacefully teleport back to Onett.
Sounds easy enough, but almost everything they do will come attached with a little trouble, whether they're immediately aware of it or not.
The concluding chapter of one of "EB" fanfiction's best works of humor, ranging from cute to downright hilarious.

8. "Master Belch's Base"  (EarthBound Novel)
By Marshall

Few chapters capture the sense of fun, adventure, and humor of the original "EarthBound" as successfully as this one. During the mission to take down Belch, Ness is suddenly separated from the others, apparently plummeting to his demise. An enraged Paula tears through the base, making short work of all opponents, not stopping until she finds Belch himself. Shortly after Jeff and Paula begin the battle, Ness, sure enough, returns in time to help out, remembering a secret advantage he'd learned of earlier.
Presented with a nice creative twist that helps develop one of the best Ness-and-Paula romances out there, this is a fantastic chapter that's full of great characterization and action.

7. "The Statue"  (EarthBound 202X: The Chosen Eight)
By INouveaux18

In this poignant tale about the power of human will, we find Mila, a member of the Chosen Eight with no PSI powers, up against incredible odds during a struggle for freedom.
When local gang leader Dangerous Tom decides it's time to expand his territory, he chooses the unwilling Mila -- who's gained quite a powerful reputation herself -- to be his main ally. Confident he'll eventually get his way, Tom waits for Mila to give in, but it turns out the only thing he's got coming is a very big surprise. Enduring the tedium of captivity, a bout with the power of Mani Mani, and even a broken bone, Mila makes an amazing escape effort, arguably displaying more guts than any member of the Chosen Eight so far.
Chances are, if you weren't a Mila fan before, you will be by the time this one's over.

6. "And Then There Were Four"  (EarthBound 202X: The Chosen Eight)
By INouveaux18

Arriving shortly after the end of the prologue, this amazing installment of 202X truly gets the story going with a bang.
Before they can get out of town, Guy, Neil, and Karen must fend off an attack from the ever-driven Mister P, who's come to take Karen with him for reasons that are as much personal as they are "professional." One of the main highlights of this one comes when Karen, having a tough time defending herself physically, briefly gets the upper hand through psychological means, using telepathy to take both herself and the audience on an interesting tour.
Things really heat up once Sasha and Zain arrive and make it a battle of five against one, but remarkably, Mister P, quick as ever with his paralysis weapon, still manages to hold his own. More remarkable than that, though, is how everything that surrounds this battle is story-related, which is what truly makes this a standout chapter.

5. "Rebellion in the Presence of Change"  (Mother Alternate)
By Giampi

    The hints were always there.
Earlier on in the story, there's a scene in which the tale's villainess, Dual Proghauser, expresses resentment when being addressed by her given name of Lisa. Then there's the little locket she carries around and seems to treasure -- yet another sentimental enigma. Though it's clear which side she's on, Proghauser is still one of the more ambiguous figures throughout the story...until chapters 1 - 3 of
Mother Alternate's "Finality" arc arrive and blow the lid off this mystery completely.
It's a tough call between parts 2 and 3, but ultimately, the more moving installment is "Rebellion in the Presence of Change," a brilliant mix of well-integrated flashbacks, epic action, and some very poignant character study. The duel between Julian and Lisa ranks as one of
MA's top battles, but naturally, this chapter belongs to the tale of just how and why a once-innocent little girl grew up to become an arch-foe of the heroes'.

4. "Here is Gone"  (EarthBound: The Perpetual Adventures)
By Michael DePalma

Even though the first installment of Perpetual received a higher rating than this one at the time of its release, "Here is Gone" is still the more emotional and probably the more memorable entry overall. The primary focus is on two days in the lives of Ness, Paula, and Michelle -- one that took place a year earlier and one that's unfolding in the present. During the latter, great drama ensues as Michelle deals with her drunken father and learns that Paula may pose a problem in her relationship with Ness. During the former, there's some wonderfully handled romance as we learn just how Ness and Michelle first got to know each other.
It adds up to a very moving, pivotal, and fun-to-follow chapter.

3. "Disaster"  (EarthBound 202X: The Chosen Eight)
By INouveaux18

It's 202X's most thrilling installment, due not only to the action, but because of the exciting new information that's revealed as well. It begins peacefully and pleasantly enough with the touching meeting between Karen and Frank, and from there progresses to a monumental showdown in which Giaguo and Kaatz confront several members of the Chosen Eight. Between the battle's beginning and end, we observe a number of poignant happenings, which include Deckard going all-out, Zain matching Kaatz move for move, Kato displaying what happens when an enemy makes him angry, Jeff learning that there's more than one Giygas, the history of empathic PSI being revealed, and Karen showing up to save the day.
With its depth of story, character, and action, this is a definitive installment of
202X.

2. "Scythe of the Reaper"  (EarthBound 200X)
By Flying Zamboni 2

Dalaam stories don't come any better than this tale surrounding the royal family -- a saga of betrayal, revolution, shattered friendship, and crumbling sanity.
It's a matter of the old resisting the new when King Leo, the ruler of Dalaam, wants to restrict life in his kingdom to the ways of tradition. But Leo's close friend Renault feels differently, and eventually takes matters into his own hands. The consequences of this dispute will not only come to affect them and their soldiers, but radically change the lives of their children as well.
Via a fantastic mix of fascinating author characters, well-constructed battles, and great dialogue,
200X presents a superb chapter that not only sets a new standard for dramas in Dalaam, but puts a great spin on "EarthBound" history.

1. "The Garden of Everything"  (Mother Alternate)
By Giampi

An appropriate title, because this chapter of
Mother Alternate truly has it all.
One of the story's main enigmas throughout is the identity of the mysterious narrator, and just what, if anything, this person's motives are. An answer arrives here, but that answer only results in some interesting new questions being raised.
As faces old and new rise and fall, the story's final battle becomes a grand drama of unlikely partnerships, unbelievable power, and indestructible bonds. Several long-standing matters -- Julian and Peel's relationship, Lisa's redemption, questions surrounding Diva, and the issue that initiated the whole quest in the first place -- finally begin to resolve themselves, with some of those resolutions being less pleasant than one might hope for.
    And yet, things somehow
still manage to wind up satisfying, with the feeling that what's taken place has worked out as fittingly as it could.
Featuring a great balance of drama, action, and emotional payoff, this is an amazingly well-executed chapter from start to finish.

The 5 Best
EarthBound Fanfiction
Characters Ever

Ranking the most fascinating characters that have appeared in "EB" fanfiction obviously wasn't going to be simple. In truth, there have been many notable ones over the years, but in narrowing it down to the top five, it is the work done with these ones that stands as a testament to why fanfiction is worth reading.

5. Angela  (EarthBound Omega)
Created by Bouvier

If you were transported into the world of "EarthBound" for about 24 hours and could teleport anywhere, one of your goals before leaving would probably be to meet or at least see Ness, Paula, Jeff, and Poo.
In Interactive Fiction, writers have sometimes had fun with the whole "visit 'EarthBound' " concept by including versions of themselves in stories.
EarthBound Omega takes a somewhat different approach with Angela -- a character who, to an extent, represents the collective "EarthBound" fanbase in general. And like any member of the audience, she's more than thrilled at the prospects of going on adventures, being a hero, and of course, meeting the Chosen Four.
Naturally, an interesting concept is only half the job, and doesn't count for much if the actual character isn't fascinating in execution -- so it's a good thing she delivers in that regard as well. When a friend she hadn't seen in over a year came to her for help, Angela responded in mere minutes. When she heard disturbing news about Poo, someone she'd grown up idolizing but had never met, Angela was stunned as though she'd been related to him. Facing down a squad of enemies in one of her very first battles, she fought through the situation with courage, strategy, and maybe even a little excitement. While walking through Eagleland, she knows everything you'd know, including where several people once lived.
This flying, PSI-powered telepath brings charm and grace to
EarthBound Omega, and is ultimately not just one of the most likable characters in that tale, but in all of "EB" storytelling as well.

4. Renault  (EarthBound 200X)
Created by Flying Zamboni 2

"EarthBound" fanfiction's most tragic hero -- probably because he just barely qualifies as such a thing.
Leaving his son and best friend behind, Renault embarks on a quest to save the one thing he loves just as much: his kingdom. Of course, whether or not Dalaam truly needs saving is the question that lingers above all when things get going, and naturally, whether or not it was all worth it to him is the question that will arise later on.
Renault is a character whose choices, beliefs, and passions make him interesting almost from the beginning, and after all the sacrifices he makes and lives he takes, it's hard to feel one way or another about him in the end.
A hero in the role of a villain -- something rarely seen in "EB" fanfiction, and something that worked wonders.

3. Karen  (EarthBound 202X: The Chosen Eight)
Created by INouveaux18

In 202X's most heartfelt subplot, a young girl named Karen is trying to find her parents, her strength, and herself.
When we meet her, Karen's a sad and isolated loner who's been softened by years of mistreatment from other kids. In her first "battle," she finds her confidence and abilities quite limited, while a similar thing occurs the next time. As the going gets tougher, though, Karen discovers that so too must she -- which is exactly what begins to happen. However, it's the moment she's been awaiting for as long as she can remember -- the touching scene in which she finally learns about her parents -- that reveals her true power and potential, and takes the first part of her story line full-circle.
She stands out not just for being fascinating, but well-developed. Her tale is a simple yet brilliantly handled character study that helped create the heart of
EarthBound 202X.

2. Ness

For a writer, Ness is probably the most easily approachable figure in "EarthBound" fanfiction. This is because the original story pretty much leaves the slate clean as far as his character is concerned; several years after the game's release, we still don't quite know exactly who this guy is.
That means, with some exception, he can be whoever a writer wants to make him without that writer having to worry much about writing him out of character. Writing Ness is an
experiment, and there are two trends that reflect the most common approaches people take in that regard.
Do you prefer the Ness who represents the more friendly, light-hearted people in the world, or do you feel that Ness is likely more of a reserved, brooding type of person?
Neither interpretation is exactly wrong...and perhaps neither interpretation is exactly right. At any rate, Ness has been employed to very notable effect in both personas. Whether he's a pouting protagonist, a romantic charmer, a grieving loner, or a sarcastic pal, it's fascinating to see which kind of Ness is being used. It's
particularly fascinating if he begins crossing from one side of the street to the other.
Of course, it doesn't hurt that he's one of the greatest heroes and all-around fighters in "EB" fanfiction, with a good mix of offense, defense, evasive maneuvers, and the ever-helpful healing abilities.
Does it ever cross your mind that perhaps the reason why Ness's personality was undefined in the game was to purposely let the players interpret him any way they wanted? If that's the case, then let's just say the creators of "EarthBound" obviously did their aspiring creators in the audience a great service.

1. Paula
Do you know what the most interesting thing about the most interesting character in "EarthBound" fanfiction is? Generally, it's the difference between the way she's presented and the way she's perceived.
When players are introduced to Paula in "EarthBound," they find a sunny, spunky angel who's a role model to little kids. When writers of "EarthBound" fanfiction take a look at this same character, however, they often see a far more complex young woman -- one who expresses the personal downsides of being famous, has a hard time relating to a boy she's got feelings for, and deals with the various emotional consequences of having telepathy.
Even a great mind like Paula's, though, couldn't have imagined the kind of potential that several writers have seen in this character over the years. During her many appearances and incarnations, she's been a concerned wife, a jealous best friend, a girl who partied too hard one night, and an angst-ridden survivor of apocalyptic futures. She's ruled a kingdom, given birth to new heroes, died and been reborn in a new form, and even become a deity.
All celestial ascensions aside, however, what's likely most appealing about Paula's character is how down-to-earth she seems -- being not a high-ranking royal, an isolated genius, or an overly quiet individual. Her closeness to normalcy makes her easy to identify with, and that's exactly why her personal musings in many fanfics sound so genuine and fascinating -- because there's a link between character and author that even the strongest of telepathic bonds couldn't rival.
Seeing what Paula can do on the outside may be what draws others to her in "EarthBound," but with the stories based on it, the main attraction among writers and readers comes from exploring what lies within. Hands down, the most emotional, versatile, and intriguing character to appear in "EarthBound" fanfiction.

The 5 Best
EarthBound Fanfiction
Battles Ever

    Conflict is inevitable.
Since "EarthBound" fanfiction, like the game itself, often covers the topic of humans facing various alien life forms (and occasionally each other), the conflicts within usually turn violent. To deal with this, heroes often carry weapons and, in many cases, can employ a highly potent mystical ability known as PSI (which would make people quite dangerous if it existed in real life).
Combat in "EarthBound" fanfiction has a more dramatic nature than that of the games, and as a result, several remarkable battles have been fought. What follows now is a look at the very finest overall.

5. SANCTUARY vs. Strong   (E. Revolution)
By Giampi

Every attack is meant to kill. It's one of those rare battles in which no one -- hero, heroine, or antagonist -- has the luxury of restraint.
As Officer Strong, a powerful agent of Giygas, catches everyone off guard, Ness tears his way into the large room and uses psychokinesis to send Strong crashing against the ceiling, letting his body find its own way down. While comforting a downed Paula, Ness is suddenly faced with a renewed attack from Strong, who engages the boy in a mystical test of strength. Paula responds by standing up and flame-broiling Strong to a crisp, fire erupting from his very being. Even then, however, Strong somehow rises again moments later, getting the better of Jeff while trying to choke the life out of him.
Finally, Ness manages to save Jeff and end it... But is it really as finished as it seems?

4. Ness vs. the Four Figures   (
Destiny's Messenger)
By Do Wop

A study of desperation and the power of persistence, this nighttime battle finds a grown-up Ness, long out of practice, up against four skilled and powerful warriors: a hulking figure, two gargoyle-types, and an enigmatic woman.
Going aerial, Ness is constantly intercepted by the flying gargoyles, soon being grounded long enough for the hulking enemy to knock him through the window of a nearby building. As the enemy follows, Ness eventually heads back outside and takes to the air again, managing to take down one of the gargoyles in the process. Finally, he and the larger creature are locked in an uninterrupted showdown, with the beast catching Ness in a bear hug. Running out of options, Ness stops attacking his foe externally and comes up with a simple but effective way to end their struggle.
The most jarring part of this whole fight obviously comes next, when Ness is confronted by his final opponent of the battle.
Probably the most memorable action scene in
Destiny's Messenger apart from the last one, this complex and engaging skirmish remains a standout work of combat.

3. Dalaam vs. Renault's Forces   (EarthBound 200X)
By Flying Zamboni 2

When words alone can't decide how things should be, weapons are brought in. That's the case in this big showdown between King Leo's forces and those of Renault, the kingdom's revolutionary.
As it drags on, Renault's men begin falling before the more skilled warriors of Leo. A notable force on the field is Leo's son, Halibur, who comes across Renault's supplier, Eddie, in a battle that's almost as humorous as it is engaging.
Then Leo and Renault finally meet, clashing in a brief but well-constructed struggle of steel and martial arts. By the time it ends, one man wins, the other dies, tears fall, and Dalaam is affected in unexpected ways.
Truly, the biggest and most heartfelt large-scale battle Dalaam has seen.

2. Julian vs. Diva   (
Mother Alternate)
By Giampi

The toughest, most emotional, and ultimately finest battle
Mother Alternate ever presented. And yes, fittingly enough, it arrives at the end.
With his friends, despite great efforts on their parts, having fallen to the might of Diva, only Julian stands against the ultra-powerful mystery woman. Summoning all the courage and skill he's acquired, Julian prepares for what will become the biggest test of his life, in more ways than one.
There's not much that can be said specifically about this battle without potentially ruining things for anyone who's yet to read the story, but in short, it's one of the main reasons
Mother Alternate's finale packs the impact that it does.

1. Heroes vs. Kaatz and Giaguo   (EarthBound 202X: The Chosen Eight)
By INouveaux18

Hands down the most memorable battle in
EarthBound 202X, this one finds Kaatz and the alien leader Giaguo confronting members of the Chosen Eight shortly after they've reached a Sanctuary. Kaatz is able to quicky get the better of an overanxious Guy, but is impressed to some extent by an attack from Deckard, though he manages to counter it with little trouble. Of course, the biggest challenge comes when Zain steps up and demands a one-on-one duel, engaging Kaatz in a battle of swords and ultimately PSI.
The thrill of this fight comes from observing the great efforts on the parts of the heroes, and watching as they eventually demonstrate just why they're a threat to their foes. In time, Kaatz finds himself surprised by Zain and thrown to the ground in a blast, his life barely saved by intervention from Giaguo. This, however, results in him having to feel Kato's wrath next, who soon impales Kaatz with a Psion Blade, sending tremendous pain throughout his body. Even Giaguo is surprised by the growing power of the team, as Karen soon enters and manages to stun him just long enough to end the fight in a draw. But what happens next time?
This great battle will leave you wondering that and more.

The 25 Best
EarthBound
Fanfics
Ever

The most challenging, heavily scrutinized part of this article by far was coming to a final conclusion on just what the top 25 stories were, and where they should rank.
It's worth noting that the placement of certain stories in the annual "Best of..." articles only reflected what those tales had to offer at the time being. This one, however, considers everything that those fanfics and others have featured since, and from there reaches an overall comparison.
It's time to give credit where credit is due. With rank being the secondary issue, and quality being the first,
EarthBound Fanfiction Reviews is proud to honor the overall greatest work ever done in "EarthBound" fanfiction.

25. Mend My Heart (Version One)
By MoonlitAngel007

Highly emotional and well-narrated, Mend My Heart opens by tackling a popular issue in "EB" fanfiction: the idea of romance between Ness and Paula.
It turns out that a hopeful Paula has (surprise, surprise) found her feelings unreciprocated, and is staggering back down the streets of Onett in tears. In due time we find that this isn't so much a Ness-and-Paula story as it is a story about Paula finding comfort from an unexpected source.
By night's end, one dream fades, another comes true, and the tale handles both happenings in beautiful fashion.

24. Close to the Edge
By Kumguats

This poetic tale of charmingly self-conscious, overzealous anti-heroes amounts to one of the most unique "EarthBound" stories ever told. Set in the future and opening on a Halloween, the story introduces us to Miles, a thoughtful, adventure-seeking, alien conspiracy-theorizing young man from Onett who engages in ritualistic combat training. We also meet Marla, a young lady from Twoson who's opted to wear pink while sporting a frying pan and a teddy bear on this particular day. They're both well aware of the Chosen Four's legend, and have decided that the whole thing might even be a legacy -- one which the two of them are more than willing to inherit. As a result, we follow both teens as they contemplate and recreate throughout this humorous and inventive piece.
Call it a social commentary on the otaku generation, call it a story that's just looking to have fun, or, if you must, call it just plain odd. In any case, it delivers a highly engaging narrative and a fun ride.

23. Mutation
By ImagineGal

Now in their thirties, Ness and Paula are raising their young son and trying to live a normal life. An especially protective Paula won't let little Jeffery anywhere near the basement, because what he'd discover might just take "normal" out of the situation. But one day Jeffery's soccer ball rolls into the forbidden area, and sure enough, the kid's going to find more than it down there when he follows.
Written with a fantastically believable sense of family life,
Mutation takes a simple-on-the-surface concept and makes it quite entertaining, using both drama and humor (especially the scene where Paula scolds Ness) to good effect.

22. A Walk Through Winters
By Bodger

What was it really like for Jeff to leave the comforts of Snow Wood and suddenly head off into the night to meet two strangers? Was he really as comfortable beforehand as it might initially appear?
A Walk Through Winters spends some time answering these questions, presenting one of the most believable interpretations of Jeff in the process.
Witty writing and an engaging quest make this one a memorable charmer.

21. Musical Hearts
By PSI322

Few fanfics move beyond Ness when it comes to Paula's love life, but the ones that do generally use Jeff as their go-to guy. None have presented him in a more sympathetic light, however, than the beautifully told
Musical Hearts.
Focusing its narrative on Jeff's feelings -- and occasionally Paula's -- the fanfic follows the heroes during their college years, a period in which Ness has been absent from Paula's life for six months, leaving her and Jeff to become closer than ever. Though shy at first, Jeff gradually loosens up and begins to treasure the time he spends alone with Paula. Days become weeks, weeks become months, and before he knows it, he's harboring a private infatuation towards her. But then Ness comes back, and sure enough, Paula is overjoyed. Things get even harder for Jeff when news pops up of Ness and Paula's engagement.
Feeling heartbroken and emotionally conflicted, it seems all Jeff can do is wish that things were different. But could a lonely boy's wishes somehow come true? This is the question that ends up haunting Jeff when a new mystery surrounding Ness suddenly arrives. While the answer appears to be an obvious
no, it all makes for an interesting situation, during which Paula's own feelings for Jeff come into question, and Jeff's loyalty to Ness is revealed.
For anyone who's always outright dismissed the whole Jeff-and-Paula thing,
Musical Hearts will give you second thoughts.

20. Hero's Resolve
By Ninten1

    On the surface,
Hero's Resolve is intriguing enough -- set during one of those gloomy futures in which Giygas has done a lot of harm -- but it's what lies beneath that truly makes this a standout tale.
As the name implies, the fanfic is centered on character and overcoming adversity. Among the topics in this regard are Poo's attempts to forgive himself for a crucial error in battle, Ness's efforts to come to terms with the wrongs he's committed while under Giygas's influence, and an emotionally scarred Paula as she struggles to keep it together.
With a great, ambiance-setting narrative, effective action, and some moving personal moments,
Hero's Resolve ranks as not only one of the best dark-future stories, but as one of the most memorably dramatic "EarthBound" fanfics in general.

19. Fall of the Pig King
By Cracked Bat

It's just another ordinary night of card-playing for brothers Ricky and Krause...when suddenly, a large spider-shaped machine crashes somewhere nearby. Thinking it may be "the coolest thing to ever happen in the history of this boring hick town," Krause heads out to investigate, soon joined by a reluctant Ricky. To the surprise of both boys, their mysterious Uncle Flint pops up too, telling them to head back to the truck, take their dog Boney, grab some supplies, and leave home -- since something dangerous is about to happen. Before they can fully escape, however, the kids learn just what that danger is: an empire of invading and wise-cracking humanoid pig soldiers are attacking Earth.
    Thus begins
Fall of the Pig King, the first entry in an ever-funny, charmingly narrated series of fanfics. Half the fun, of course, comes from the endearing qualities present in the main cast. Flint is terrifically written as the enigmatic and humorous older warrior whose skill defies his age, while Krause and Ricky have an enjoyable relationship right from the start. In addition, the charismatic Cecilia and the treasure hunter Espeon contribute well as some of the first supporting players, along with the smarter-than-average Boney.
From the early hook of "An Unexpected Roadblock" (the second chapter, but the one that really draws the reader in), to the anticlimactic finale,
Fall of the Pig King is a great start to a great series of 'fics, and also -- all things considered -- a testament to the creativity of fanfiction.

18. Nephew of the Forgotten One
By Anthadd

It's time to see what Tracy and Picky are made of in this tale of constant travel and action-packed adventure. Imbued with PSI powers via special fragments called Crystal-shards, the duo embarks on a mission to find a set of Energy Points scattered throughout the world. Along the way, they team up with allies old and new, including Tony, Paula, Ness, Poo, and supposed twins Dusty and BJ -- whose similarities start to end with their appearances. Speaking of Dusty, he may indeed be one of the coolest ACs ever, due in no small part to those always-entertaining tarot cards, which not only cover offense, but provide defense and assistance as well, thanks to moves like Fajin and Gravity Well.
    A first-gen Neo-story,
NFO shows what can be done when you really search for the latent potential of supporting characters. It also features some notable antagonists in the Point guardians, and offers an interesting presentation by playing out almost entirely in first-person, repeatedly toggling the point of view from one character to the next.

17. South of Summers
By Cammie Jensen

Question: How hard could it possibly be for four friends to head off to Summers and enjoy themselves?
    Answer: Very.
    In
South of Summers, Mayor Pirkle gives the Chosen Four a special getaway as reward for their saving the world. After all their hardships, all they have to do now is go somewhere and have fun. However, via a series of innate differences, unexpected inconveniences, and reckless bouts of thrill-seeking, things end up going a little...wrong.
Funny from start to finish, and one of the most enjoyable friendship stories out there (in a light-hearted sort of way),
South of Summers is a total winner.

16. The Coming Darkness
By JamesPicard_007

Why is it that Paula's more pleasant dreams, such as being happily married or hitting it rich, tend to never have any relation to her reality, but the ones depicting Earth-shattering chaos and intense struggle always have to mean something?
    In
The Coming Darkness, the Chosen Four are once again involved in a quest surrounding eight crucial areas, but with an interesting twist: this time it's the antagonists who need to reach them. Standing in the way are the heroes and a couple of well-presented author characters: mercenary/adventurer Allen Black and his partner Dr. Sam -- two young men who provide an alternate viewpoint on the unfolding enigma.
Concisely written, well-narrated, and fun to follow, what keeps
The Coming Darkness interesting is its intriguing concept, nicely handled ACs, and engaging mystery.

15. Destiny's Messenger
By Do Wop

This eight-part look at angst, love, and loss follows Ness during the most difficult period of his life. Now all grown up, the retired hero is living a quiet, lonesome existence, wanting little to do with a prophesy within his dreams lately. But when a mysterious new comrade named Mahna arrives, along with a slew of new foes, Ness once again finds himself cast in a drama between light and dark -- having to fight entirely alone this time. The reason for this is that the focus of Destiny's Messenger, despite its impressive action and fascinating antagonists, isn't on how the world benefits from Ness's actions, but on how Ness himself does.
In short, the story takes a few conventions of "EarthBound" fanfiction -- a brooding Ness, a familiar enemy, and of course, the special feelings between our hero and Paula -- and wraps them up in an unusually dark and especially dazzling package.

14. EarthBound: The Perpetual Adventures
By Michael DePalma

The most reality-based "EarthBound" fanfic there is, EarthBound: The Perpetual Adventures -- read the title closely -- is a teen drama that focuses more on the normal, ongoing problems of its cast than on their occasional heroic escapades. Rather than dealing with Starmen and Mooks, the various Perpetual protagonists face a romantic ethical dilemma, a difficult home environment, and the issues of an evolving love life.
That's not all. Fading friendship, a taunting temptress, sentimental moments that make you smile, and extreme efforts to duck higher education help round things out nicely. While
Perpetual's centerpiece is probably the triangle between Ness, Paula, and Michelle, it can be said that the real star of this show is the general balance of entertaining normalcy and clever humor that make it such a refreshing joy to read.

13. The Ones We Leave Behind
By Bodger

Think you know all there is to know about Pokey? Think there couldn't possibly be anything more to the little jerk? If so, prepare to think again.
In this beautifully narrated character study, follow Ness on a trip down memory lane as he reviews some of the key moments of his history with his next-door neighbor. Witness the pair's notable encounters at school, in which Ness defends Pokey on the playground. "Why'd you even bother?" ask the other kids. "It's POKEY." Learn what kind of effects Pokey's superior attitude has -- not just on others, but on him privately as well. See just how Ness and Pokey's friendship eventually came to be, and how they managed to get along to some extent for a period of time. And in the present, observe as the only two guys Pokey has ever really been close to -- Ness and Picky -- decide it's time to find their mutual acquaintance when a mysterious trail begins turning up.
Besides fleshing out Pokey's character, the tale also does a great job in its presentation of Ness, via an insightful, empathetic narration that amounts to one of the best first-person works in all of "EB" storytelling.

12. The Rush
By Michael DePalma, Fabricati Diem, Javer, and Flying Zamboni 2

Picture it: 1923. A group of highly charismatic bank-robbers make a massive score and end up turning it into hidden treasure. Now picture modern day Eagleland, in which several people, for various reasons, form teams and enter a travel contest to find that very treasure. With friendship, mistrust, and a bit of emotional baggage along for the ride, only four words are needed to sum this situation up: The Rush is on.
    Well-planned and fantastically executed,
The Rush not only offers an enticing concept, but delivers in the area of character as well. Picky is presented in one of his most fascinating roles, being the slightly toughened family outsider who still clings to his kindness. The tale also features a highly entertaining phase of Ness and Paula's relationship, each now in their twenties and perhaps a little overanxious with matters like love, fun...marriage.
With seamless writing between installments and an easy-to-follow story, this is a tale that any "EB" fan can rush to and enjoy.

11. EarthBound: Simple Gifts
By Kent Bogar

Another group of heroes -- cool-headed Colin, tech whiz Kent, weapon supplier Adam, semi-rebellious Kelly, and Colin's mellow but quick-witted girlfriend Casey -- are about to unite with the Chosen Four for a grand adventure. It begins when Colin receives a message on his computer from Paula one night, then leaves a note for his cousin Kent and flies off to help -- literally. In short time, Kent and Colin's friends will be arming up and coming to lend their aid. And in the meanwhile, Colin's mind is constantly turning to Casey as his gaze seems to be occasionally turning to Paula.
All of this isn't part of a whole new story, however, but rather serves as an inventive retreading of familiar material. The finely written
EarthBound: Simple Gifts takes the game's tale and throws ACs into the mix. This not only gives Ness and company some extra allies, but makes for some interesting new angles on the events as they play out.
Simple? Maybe. A gift to fanfiction? Definitely.

10. Mirror Image
By MoonlitAngel007

When a surge of new attacks devastate Eagleland, the situation eventually becomes bigger than Ness and his friends can handle alone, prompting Ninten, Ana, Loid, and Teddy to arrive and lend their aid. Thing is, neither of the two teams initially know about the other, which is where the awkward and fun part comes in.
Don't be misled by anything up front. Yes, this is a story that takes place mostly in Eagleland, but
Mirror Image divides its focus equally between the casts of both games. Yes, this is an action/adventure fanfic, but Mirror Image is, at heart, a tale that's centered around character and character relations (triangles, anyone?). And yes, this is a crossover, but Mirror Image is also a crossover that makes sense, avoiding the controversial areas and bringing things together quite nicely.
No fan of both games should miss this beautifully written drama.

9. EarthBound: ReBound
By Fabricati Diem

Witty and creative, EarthBound: ReBound is a fantastic re-imagining of the "EarthBound" we already know.
Sure, part of what makes it enjoyable is the newly revealed history between Pokey and Elliot (don't call him Ness), as well as some fun twists on how other things play out, but the real highlights of this story are the amusing relationships between its main players. In accomplishing this, the fanfic tweaks a bit more about the characters than their names, and winds up with some very fascinating results. Ness is presented as the take-no-crap-when-he-can-help-it young man known as Elliot, Paula has become the cocky, knife-packing (and mysteriously scarred) Skye, and Jeff is the somewhat arrogant, occasionally irritable genius called Joseph.
It all comes down to some of the most engaging conversations ever written in "EarthBound" fanfiction, courtesy of some very humourous dialogue and consistent characterization.
    Almost everything that's familiar in
ReBound also has some charming unfamiliarity to it -- such as the Threed resistance movement and the aftermath of Elliot and Skye's introduction -- and the addition of the new ends up complementing the old in very entertaining ways.

8. Cycle
By ImagineGal

Set over a decade after the first quest began, Cycle teams the Chosen Four up one more time in an effort to stop Pokey's most maniacal scheme yet.
Sound familiar? Of course, but at heart, the fanfic is really a tale about the effects of a long-term separation on friendship. At some point between the end of "EarthBound" and the beginning of
Cycle, the heroes had another showdown with Pokey. During this encounter, their lone enemy, using undiscovered PSI and new technology, was able to rob Ness of his memory and transport Onett into another realm -- his first step in building a special world of his own. The current situation follows Paula, Jeff, and Poo as they attempt to reconnect with Ness -- who's spent 10 years in an asylum -- while finding a way to save Onett and the other towns Pokey's adding to his collection.
It won't be a simple affair, and one reason for that has to do with Jeff's special feelings for Paula complicating his friendship with Ness -- the guy she still has a thing for.
An imaginative conflict, an interesting triangle, and a great look into Ness's heart and head all help make this story a classic.

7. EarthBound Omega
By Bouvier

In what's now a widely recognizable concept, EarthBound Omega is a story that follows a new bunch of heroes decades after the Chosen Four's adventure.
Like any other fanfic, however, where this one shines is in the way its concept is handled. In a unique and fascinating move,
EarthBound Omega, initially, keeps its characters nice and scattered for a good deal of time, usually teaming no more than two up during any given situation. This created a wide and enticing range of story lines to follow, propelled by one of the best ensemble casts in "EB" fanfiction.
The first protagonist we met was Brian, whose qualities, surprisingly enough, leaned a little more towards the human than the heroic. Among the others is Angela, who ranks as one of the most entertaining characters in the medium. And then there's Robert, the liberated, loyal young soldier who's out to save a group of captives and his lost girlfriend -- if there's still time. Present as well is a great, charismatic cast of villains, some of whom aren't even on the same side, as we sometimes see when they come across each other.
    Also unique about
Omega is how the older heroes aren't exactly brushed aside, but involve themselves in the action and even have story lines of their own, such as Ness's struggle against a mysterious alien affliction.
With its great cast and terrific storytelling, you may even forget that this is all part of a battle to save the world. First and foremost,
EarthBound Omega is a character-driven tale that delivers an engaging read.

6. EarthBound Novel
By Marshall

The definitive "EarthBound" retelling -- controversial ending and all -- EarthBound Novel is a wonderfully written gem of an adaptation.
Let's just get the obvious part out of the way: the Chosen Four are remarkably well-handled in this story. It showcases Paula as a cool yet impulsive everyday girl who just happens to have special powers, presents Poo at his most royally noble while still making him relatable, and depicts Jeff as a devoted and capable friend who the others can always count on. It also does a nice job of getting in Ness's head for a good dose of insight, such as the moment on the bus when he begins to feel pressured, then quietly locks eyes with Paula and senses that it'll all be worth it.
What also sustains the quality of this story is its attention to detail, making a lot of the little stuff seem quite big in its own way -- and entertainingly so. Take the scene when Ness, logically enough, starts to wonder just where Giygas is and how they're supposed to find him once the melodies are collected. Then there's the more humorous example in which Jeff, passing through a cave in Winters, notices a bunch of eyes watching him from the shadows, then grabs Bubble Monkey and flees while hearing the animals in pursuit.
Of course, the attention to detail is also part of why the combat in this fanfic is so engaging. Another reason for that is the great creativity, and while the alterations to the story's final battle have met with some slight objections over the years, there's hardly any disputing that those changes still make for a very entertaining showdown.
    An overall great read,
EarthBound Novel did a fantastic job of recreating the story that inspired it.

5. EarthBound 200X
By Flying Zamboni 2

It begins...in silence, letting the appearances do the talking. The only scene you witness is Pokey's busted spider vehicle falling through the sky, about to crash in Dalaam. The appearance that this scene conveys is that EarthBound 200X is going to be yet another tale of a taunting, stupid Pokey returning to briefly stir up trouble and being easily foiled in due time. But as the old saying goes, appearances can be deceiving, and what at first seems to be a run-of-the-mill fanfic about the "EarthBound" class clown soon evolves into a growing drama of personal vendettas, incredible action, and political conspiracy.
As things kick off, the Chosen Four are -- not for the last time in this story -- attempting to handle a hostage situation in Eagleland. But it's not long before the fanfic moves back to Dalaam, because as time will tell, all other matters throughout this tale will either be affected by or tied to someone or something from the floating kingdom. This is where the fanfic brings in a remarkable cast of ACs, and it is through their motivations and those of the CF that the storytelling shines. Just a few examples of this come during "Inferno," "Angels and Demons," "Patriot," "Keep Yourself Alive," and the phenomenal "Scythe of the Reaper."
Featuring moments that are tragic, stunning, and oh-so exhilarating,
EarthBound 200X brought new life to the action/adventure genre, primarily by showing that a little creativity truly does go a long way.

4. E. Revolution
By Giampi

This 13-part drama takes a look at how the story of "EarthBound" could have turned out had things gone differently. However, unlike many other studies on this same topic, the cause of the difference isn't Giygas surviving and going on to wreak havoc, but rather, Giygas being stopped.
In the distant past, long before the grim future Buzz Buzz came from can even come
close to happening, Giygas is defeated -- prematurely, if you will. This puts several changes into effect, and in a nutshell, an alien-fighting organization called SANCTUARY was created, with the primary purpose of stopping Giygas whenever it returns -- which it's foretold to do -- to spread its influence.
    The brilliantly conceived
E. Revolution, set during the present of this whole situation, tells a poignant tale of a girl named Paula, the victim of an experiment gone wrong; a young man named Poo, who grew up the lone survivor of an attack by Giygas on his kingdom; a boy named Jeff, whose only living relative is the ever-busy commander of SANCTUARY; and Jeff's best friend Ness, a new SANCTUARY recruit with amazing power.
The tale, great from the start, only gets better as it progresses, particularly around the halfway mark when notable new characters like Tony and Maxwell Labs join Dr. Andonuts and the others, revealing the true depth of what's driving everything.
When it comes to "EarthBound" fanfiction,
E. Revolution is the epitome of alternate reality creativity.

3. The Candle: Stories of Confession
By Anthadd, James, Giampi, and PSI322

No one's perfect. Not even Ness, Paula, Jeff, and Poo. So in this fun but moving look at just what it is they've each got to hide, take a seat and follow along as they relay surprising stories of personal history.
Learn how telepathic foresight can end up being used to Paula's advantage. Witness Poo in a moment of weakness driven by ambition. Hear Jeff's account on how years of separation can affect a parent-child relationship. And see what happens to Ness during a matter of friendship and power.
    With its clever, varied tales,
The Candle: Stories of Confession remains a memorable entry in the area of group fiction.

2. Mother Alternate
By Giampi

You've heard it all before -- how it's the greatest "Mother 1" fanfic of all time; how it helped pave the way for the Neo-"EarthBound" genre; how it's got some of the finest action of any "EB" tale; and how it's overall one of the best stories available in this category of fanfiction. Everything you've heard is true. Of course, anyone who's read
Mother Alternate already knows this.
Five years after the events of "Mother 1," certain heroes from the first adventure have apparently parted ways. At the same time, a succession of small new attacks begin popping up, a PSI-gifted boy named Julian becomes aware of his potential, and an equally gifted girl elsewhere begins learning how to abuse hers. It sounds almost simplistic on the surface, but all of these seemingly unrelated happenings will soon be tied together by a mysterious puppet master. As that takes place, so will a series of jaw-dropping revelations, riveting battles, and moving moments of romance and friendship.
    The author of
Mother Alternate, a big fan of the very first "Mother," originally planned to simply create a short but heartfelt tribute to one of his favorite games ever. Via a growing amount of creative passion, however, the idea was eventually expanded into a stunning vision of where things could go from where they'd begun. In short, this is the kind of thing that happens when a great writer and a great story collide: great fanfiction.

1. EarthBound 202X: The Chosen Eight
By INouveaux18

This far-reaching tale of the future stands as the most well-told "EarthBound" fanfic ever written.
The initial reasoning behind this adventure -- the titular players have to find eight Sanctuaries -- serves merely as a launching point for what was always meant to be a more complex work of storytelling.

EarthBound 202X's commitment to character-focused writing becomes evident very quickly, particularly when it's revealed that each installment of the prologue is dedicated to a single member of the Chosen Eight. But building an interesting cast is only one part of this story's mission, as it also aims to expand various points of the "EarthBound" universe.
Just what, exactly, was the whole deal with Giygas? In
202X's explanation, Giygas was but one in a series of machines, a primary weapon of a group of alien invaders who are making their latest attempt at conquering Earth.
Ever wonder about the evolution of PSI? This story offers two cleverly written variants of the power, one being an early version called empathic PSI -- a powerful tool that few people currently living posses -- and the other being the highly advanced pseals, which are meant to have long-lasting effects.
Of course, when coming across a story that's set in the future, it's only natural for a reader to wonder what kind of children, if any, certain characters from "EarthBound" may have ended up having. The pleasant news is that in
202X, a few of them did indeed become happy parents. The not-so-pleasant news is that many of their offspring have had rather rocky upbringings. From a dramatic standpoint, however, this is where the story creates some very interesting family backgrounds -- especially for Karen, one of the best-crafted characters in "EB" fanfiction.
And on the subject of characters, it almost goes without saying that a good deal of the story's appeal rests with its terrific cast, who are always fun to watch and root for. There's Mila, the hardened street fighter with a great will and an even greater heart. There's also Deckard, the noble warrior trained in Dalaam who's out to find his friend Lexa. Kato, the equally noble and highly skilled son of Poo who provides a voice of reason. Guy, the mechanical genius and son of Orange Kid who brings his talents to the quest. Kyla, the super-smart daughter of Apple Kid and longtime companion of Guy, whose skills at least match his. Karen, the once-lonely but highly kind girl who searches for those she holds dear. Sasha, the pleasant young woman who eventually loses and has to reclaim her own self-esteem. And Zain, the courageous and steadfast leader of the Chosen Eight.
It also helps that the story has some standout villains in Kaatz and Mister P, the former, like many good antagonists, occasionally displaying some three-dimensional qualities that raise a question or two.
Speaking of questions, there may be one in particular that sometimes comes up while reading through
EarthBound 202X, and that would be why, exactly, it seems to take the characters so long to actually reach the Sanctuaries. The answer, as previously mentioned, is that with all of these story elements involved, the tale's primary focus simply lies elsewhere, and its execution in that regard is exactly what makes it work as well as it does.
As with most great storytelling, it's not about the destination, it's about the journey, and the way this journey's been navigated has done "EarthBound" fanfiction proud.

* * * *

Like many of the tales themselves, "EarthBound" fanfiction is an ongoing affair, and as far as its story goes, this is by no means a prelude to an end. If anything, the great things that have happened only serve as an indicator of great things to come.
