"She Said"

She said, “Just let if flow”
they don’t care
what comes out of your mouth
don’t really care
what you write down
She told me to be authentic
don’t be afraid what they think
she told me to trust
my own instincts
but I’m like a bird of flight
who’s afraid of heights
and rather than bail myself out
I’d just let the boat sink
That was only a few days ago
and we were a hundred
miles from here
I feel like I walked all
the way
Not sleeping a drop
or drinking a wink
I slipped on the ice
and fell on my back
So now I’ve got to try again
with the resiliency of
a spring I don’t have,
try to learn a new part
to a song that I have only known
the melody
I still have my sword
To slay this problem
Though it’d be easier
Just to accept it
Than to transcend
Its mediocrity.
But she said to have faith
something I lost
sometime before,
And she said to enjoy the taste
of the drink
not just gulp it down
She said, “just let it flow.”
Instead, I just let it go.
