Think You Own Your House?
| All my life I looked forward to owning my own house, my own land. Something that would be mine. No-one would be able take it away from me. It would be my refuge. As I got older, I learned about mortgages, property taxes, building permits and eminent domain. I found out that I would need a mortgage to buy my piece of the planet. It would take me decades to own my land. A big disappointment to be sure, but in the end I would still have my sanctuary - even if it would be after 30 years. After that I would not "have" to keep insurance or make those monthly payments. Or would I? That's right - I would still have to pay taxes. A payment that amounted to a rent to the local government. If I didn't pay I would be evicted. Well even if I didn't really own the property at least I was in control of it. Or was I? Oh yeah. That's right. No. I couldn't live in the woods if I wanted. The way I wanted. I couldn't build without the permission of the real owners - the government. Got to have permits- building permits - gotta get the local government to allow you to make changes to their income producing property. But at least if you are a good tenant you can stay on the property till you die. Nope. Wrong again. Eminent Domain. That's right. If the government feels that they want to put a road, or a shopping center or housing projects on "your" land. Guess what? You're out and they're in. Its called eminent domain, and they will pay you what they consider "fair market value".
You can't build or remodel without the government's permission. You can't wire your house without the government's permission. You can't have animals or grow crops without the governments permission. you can't even take a crap - unless its in a government approved crapper.
