Survey Of 1st Timothy
INTRODUCTION TO THE ECCLESIOLOGICAL LETTERS:
A. Written during the closing years of Paul's life.
*The emphasis is given to the matter of church order.
B. The New Testament does not give a clear picture of Paul's final years.
C. Acts closes with Paul in prison in Rome during his first imprisonment.
D. It is believed he was aquitted by Caesar after 2 years. (Spring of A.D. 62)
E. Acts 20 - He left Timothy to oversee that church and stand up against false teachers. (2Timothy 1:4)
INTRODUCTION TO 1 TIMOTHY:
This first letter to Timothy is one of three letters Paul wrote at the end of his life. He was concerned about what would happen to the churches he had cared for over the years. Therefore, he wrote to his two most trusted assistants, Timothy and Titus. These letters are known as the "PASTORAL EPISTLES," since they are written to two pastors.

KEY WORD - CHARGE!
This is a military term for a command to be passed down.

1. Timothy was a young man whose mother was a Jew and father a greek (Acts 16:1). He was reared in a godly home and was taught the Word of God by his mother and grandmother (2Timothy 1:5; 3:14-16).
2. Timothy was saved when Paul visited his home town (Lystra) on his first missionary journey. The next time Paul passed through that town, he recruited Timothy to join the missionary group (Acts 16:1-5).
3. Timothy eventually was left in Ephesus to pastor the church there. He was a young pastor with a BIG church and was facing many problems. (See Acts 20:28-30 concerning Paul's prediction that problems would arise in the church.)
PROBLEMS TIMOTHY FACED:
a. He was a young man pastoring older people. (4:12; 5:1,2)
b. He missed Paul and wanted to quit. (1:3; 2Tim. 1:4)
c. He possibly made hasty decisions concerning church officers that caused problems. (5:17-22)
d. He was faced with many youthful temptations; he may have been single. (2Tim. 2:22)
e. He probably had physical problems, possible over worry and stress. (5:23)
f. False teachers had to be confronted. (1:3-20)
g. He needed advice about managing church affairs, including officers and widows. (chps. 3 & 5)
4. Paul writes to instruct and challenge Timothy to deal with the problems and to stay with the work.
5. Paul urged Timothy to boldly withstand the evil by upholing the truth of the Scriptures.
THIS LETTER IS A MANUAL OF PASTORAL LEADERSHIP FOR THE LORD'S CHURCHES.
