Mrs. Willson's Very Excellent Building Adventure
I ordered a new circle station cart for the classroom.  When it came in we took it out of the box.  It was not put together so I thought it would be a good following directions activity for the children.  This was about the third week of first grade so I read the directions while the children put it together.

First we sorted the parts and then counted so we knew we had all the parts to do the job.
We gathered our tools and went to work.  I would read the directions and the children would discuss what they thought they heard and what they should do.
The shelf got put together without having to get outside help.
The children had to work together cooperatively.
We learned:
How important reading and listening skills are.
Sharing and working together accomplishes much.
People can  hear the same thing and interpret it differently.
Some people can look at a drawing and know what to do.
Girls can build things too.
You can do lots of things by following the directions.
What a great 45 minutes we had.  The cart is wonderful! We use it daily.
