Cantrip Casting - Alternate Rules
Back to the House Rules
Why the rules needed changing:
Well, it's a combination of things. Mainly, there are two problems with cantrips as they stand - first, that they're a bit unwieldey, and second, that they can't be used often enough to be truly worthwhile (thanks to the limits imposed by Realm requirements). Due to this, I worked out some alternate rules. Feel free to use any, all, or none of the following rules designed to make life a little more interesting.
Alternate Realm Rules #1:
(Note: This is the system that I use personally.)
Rather than both determining the limitations of a spell's target AND being a die pool, kithain realms act as a pure die pool - any fae can affect any target. However, affecting certain targets is easier than others, based on Realms once again:
Actor: Apply a Difficulty modifier of -1 if the target is very well-known to you. Apply a difficulty modifier of +1 if the target is a stranger.
Fae: Apply a Difficulty modifier of -1 if the target is a commoner or chimera. Apply a difficulty modifier of +1 if the target is Gallain or purely magical.
Nature: Apply a Difficulty modifier of -1 if the target is inanimate or dead and organic. Apply a Difficulty modifier of +1 if the target is a meterological phenomenon or a prime element.
Prop: Apply a Difficulty modifier of -1 if the target is single-piece, and single material. Apply a Difficulty modifier of +1 if the target requires a chemical, electrical, or similar power source.
Scene: Works as in the book.
Time: Works as in the book, but due to the rather limiting rating, the realm has been expanded. In addition to delaying a spell, Time can allow it to go off if a target enters the area.
* - Delay 1 minute
** - Delay 1 hour
*** - Delay 1 week
**** - Delay 3 months
***** - Delay 1 year
Automatic Casting
Due to the nature of Banality, even the simplest cantrip can be fairly difficult to cast, requiring Glamour, bunks, and a good die pool, especially if you want to be able to affect mortals. However, fae were reputed to be able to cast such spells without even the slightest effort. Although weakened by Banality, this rule applies to this. Please note that it somewhat boosts the power of fae compared to mortals, and won't advantage the PCs much, at least not at first.
When a character reaches the fourth rank in an Art, they have gained enough mastery within that Art to work its most simple effects without effort. A changeling with four dots in an Art can cast the first rank without a bunk, expenditure of Glamour, or die roll, with one success. If their target has a Banality rating of 8 or above, this cantrip fails automatically. Otherwise, it is successful. If a spell requires successes at first level to divide between effect and duration, assume one success in each.
When a changeling masters an Art, their mastery grows further, giving them the ability to perform even greater feats. A changeling with five dots can cast first-rank cantrips of their Art as above, but with two successes, and the target must have a Banality of 9 to be immune. Furthermore, they can cast second-rank cantrips in exactly the same way, with one success.
