<< Leamaneh >> Leamaneh Castle

The history of Irish Castles includes one of the more famous of the many Castles in Ireland, Leamaneh Castle, which dates back to some time around 1480. The castles name is pronounced "Lay-mi-on-ay" which in Irish

means "Horses Leap." If you look closely at the castle you will notice that it is actually in two distinguished parts. The five story tower house on the right was built in 1480 by the OBriens and is more fortified and protected than the rest of the house which was added by Connor OBrien in 1640. This section of the castle has four stories and is distinguished by its intact stone window frames.

The castle was originally surrounded by a high stone wall, which has long since fallen. Directly above the castles tower entrance is a murder hole these were used to dumb boiling water, boiling oil, throw rocks, throw arrows, or anything else that could be dropped from above onto someones head to prevent someone such as an invader from entering the castles stronghold.

The OBriens lost control over the estate when Conor OBrien was killed in 1651 while fighting Cromwell soldiers. His wife married one of the soldiers in order to save her sons inheritance but in the end he lost it despite her sacrifice.
