<< Ashford >> Ashford Castle

The history of Irish Castles includes one of the more famous of the many Castles in Ireland, Ashford Castle, which dates back to the 13th century.

The original Ashford Castle dates back to the 13th century and was built by the Burgos family after their defeat of the Native OConnors of Connaught. Later owners, successive lords, expanded and later fortified the original castle; a French style chateau built inside the 13th century castle was built in the mid 1700s by Lord Ardilaun. In 1852 the castle became the home of the Guinness family, and has since been transformed into one of Irelands finest resort hotel, as have so many historic Irish Castles.

The castle is situated on three hundred and fifty acres on the shores of Lough Corrib which is one of Irelands many gorgeous lakes. Ashford Castle is located in the town of Cong, which is often used for film shoots.

The interior of the castle consists of eighty three grand rooms, each room is spacious and filled with beautiful intricate antiques, complete with a fire place in each one adding to the unique beauty of a 13th century castle which its beauty cannot be taken away from even if it has been completely restored and turned into a resort hotel with golf courses.
