Emigration

Frilanders abroad
Although Friland has never known a strong emigration, a number of countries do have a Frilandic minority. These expatriates can be divided into three groups: the so-called "andwrotars" (uprooted), who fully assimilate in the new country, and the "trewars" (loyalists), who stick to their origin and often form cultural enclaves within the land of settlement.
The main part of the emigration took place during the 19th century and the period following World War 2. Migration to overseas territories is not included on this page. Hereunder are the other countries where most Frilandic expatriates settled:

United States and Canada
At the end of the 19th century the Friland-Amerika Wrait (Friland-America Line) was founded in Erlanhuf. This shipping company possessed three ships: the FAW Neu-Jorwik, FAW Angilstad and FAW Broşarleub, the Frilandic names for New York, Los Angeles and Philadelphia. With these ships thousands of Frilanders went to the United States to build up a better life there; these were especially poor people from Medga and Nurşland. By the way, in Frilandic the United States are called "Amerika" and the continents of North and South America are usually called "Westhaim".
Most Frilanders who settled in the United States did that in the states of New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Michigan. Most of them assimilated quickly; only in Michigan you can these days still find small communities where Frilandic is spoken, especially in the area of Marquette.
In 1874 the FAW also starting sailing on Canada, which quickly made the country popular. Many Frilanders liked it so much there, that they wanted to stay. Most of them went to Ontario.

In 1881 the Fourth Frilandic-Hiverian War ended the voyages to North America: a Hiverian battleship sunk the FAW Neu-Jorwik and the FAW Broşarleub on the Atlantic ocean, in which 268 people lost their lives. The FAW Angilstad was requisited by the Frilandic navy and used as a supply ship. After the war attempts were made to revive the FAW, but in 1884 the company went bankrupt.
These days many Frilanders in North and South America have joined the Westhaimiska Sedalarstraust (American Colonists League), which defends their interests and guides them when there are problems.

Australia and New Zealand
The emigration to Australia and New Zealand, named "Sunşland" and "Neu-Sailand" in Frilandic, especially took place after World War 2. The first Frilandic colonists were farmers from Skak and Berglaft, who were looking for affordable farmland. Most of them went to New South Wales. Another group consisted of strictly religious people from Medga, who founded a number of settlements near Barrow Creek in Northern Territory during the sixties. In their new homes they wanted to maintain a traditional existence without technology. However, their children thought differently and moved to the city of Darwin in great numbers. These days only two settlements remain: Sandhau ("Sand hill") and Halşurp ("Rockville").
In New Zealand most Frilanders settled in Greater Auckland. Although they have now assimilated into the population of New Zealand there are still some Frilandic style houses in Auckland and Hamilton.

Argentina
At the beginning of the 20th century the Frilandic businessman Haimward Godmundssun moved to Argentina, which is called "Silubarland" (Silverland) in Frilandic. Haimward was wanted for tax evasion and his departure to Argentina allowed him to escape the tax authorities. This brought other Frilanders to bad ideas: large numbers of them therefore quickly scammed the tax authorities and then left for Argentina as well, where they couldn't be extradited. The Argentineans were of course not happy with this riff-raff, but later honest Frilanders also came to Argentina for nice weather and a better future. Most of them settled in the southern province of Santa Cruz.

Russia
At the White Sea in Russia there's an area with a partially Frilandic population, named Winaland. This used to be a colony of the Frilandic company DWU. In China there was a similar colony (Sandjau) but nowadays there are no Frilanders living there anymore.

Africa
In the African country of Kumanga there's a Frilandic autonomous region, where the majority of the population descends from Frilandic colonists.

Middle East
The Agmar minority on the Zawiyan island of Khadra descends from Frilandic colonists.
