The college at Roorkee is important and prestigious because it plays a vital role in providing indigenous technology and technical manpower to the country. The university has 47 departments and centres including the Institute of Paper Technology at Saharanpur engaged in academic activities at the graduate, post-graduate and the doctoral levels.

Academic eligibility

 One has to pass in any one of the following examinations:

Intermediate science examination, 10+2 or any equivalent with mathematics, physics and chemistry or geology from any recognised board or university in India.

Diploma in engineering or architecture, the examination of the Board of Technical Education, Uttar Pradesh, or of other recognised boards or universities in India.

No age restrictions

Roorkee Entrance Examination (REE)

The University of Roorkee conducts a competitive examination on an all-India basis for admission to its bachelor's courses in engineering and architecture. The branches of engineering offered include:

The examination is an objective type paper of two hours in mathematics, physics and chemistry. The papers consist 100 questions (40 of mathematics and 30 each of physics and chemistry) each carrying one mark. On the basis of one's performance in this paper, a cut-off limit is decided by the university at approximately 20 times the total number of seats and the candidates within this limit. Only those who make it within this qualify for the second round.

In the second stage or the main examination, three papers in physics, mathematics and chemistry, each of 2 hours duration, carrying 100 marks are to be taken. Those applying for architecture have a three hour aptitude test.

In determining the merit for the final selection, the marks obtained in the qualifying examination are not included in the total score. However, there is no negative marking in the qualifying paper. There is no age restriction for appearing in this examination.

Out of 380 seats, 20 are reserved for foreign candidates who have to fulfil the necessary conditions to be nominated by the Government of India.

Regional Engineering College (RECs)

Regional Engineering Colleges are well equipped teaching institutions conducting BE/B.Tech/B.Sc. (engineering) courses. For admission to one or any REC, a student need submit only one application.

All states in the country have been divided into regions and each region comes under the jurisdiction of a regional college. There are about 5,180 seats in the various branches of engineering, 50% of which are open to candidates from other states through the CEET Examination.

The location of the school or college from where a student takes the qualifying examination decides as to where he must apply for taking the Common Entrance Exam.

  • Half the seats are reserved for students of the state in which the REC is located and the remaining 50% of seats are earmarked for candidates from other states with quotas for each state based on population.

  • Indian nationals studying abroad and passing the qualifying exam from schools abroad can apply to the REC of the area to which he/she is domiciled.
