We are a group of Hoofer Sailing Club members and alumni who believe in the social education mission of the club and the Wisconsin Union, and want to support it as a member-run co-operative.
We have decided that the best way to support the Hoofer Sailing Club is to provide a liaison to other sailing and boating organizations, such as United States Power Squadrons® and Pier Wisconsin, to provide wider avenues of experience and education to Hoofer sailors. At this time, we do not do fund-raising for the Hoofer Sailing Club because we believe that the club has enough money from membership dues to meet its immediate and future needs, if the club's leaders allocate those funds wisely.
Our primary goal at this time is to procure a sailing vessel equipped for extended cruising on the Great Lakes, find a berth for it in Milwaukee, and form an education-oriented sail cruising club around it. If you would like to donate a boat or other equipment to Friends of UW Sailing, or know of somebody who might consider us, please let us know.
Other potential activities include creating a Hoofer alumni Web site for HSC alumni to keep in contact, or sponsoring an Olympic campaign for UW sailors.
Friends of UW Sailing, Inc. is a public, nonstock Wisconsin corporation formed to pursue our goals. We are seeking public charity status under 501(c)(3) of the federal tax code, so that we can accept tax-deductible donations in excess of $5,000 per year. At this time, we may consider donations not exceeding $5,000.
Our guiding principles follow the Wisconsin tradition of Porter Butts, the first Director of the Wisconsin Union, who emphasized the self-reliant values of an earlier era in the progressive Midwest. Our organization succeeds and fails on the shoulders of its members alone. The risk is what makes it enriching and worthwhile. We depend on each other to give what he or she is capable of only, and in that giving one finds purpose. Like the first visionaries of the Wisconsin Union, we welcome anybody who has interest in joining us to build this cooperative so we may all learn together and from each other. Here, nobody is served; we all serve each other as an educational gift to one another. Please inquire to us if you would like to join us in building something truly unique.
